Nice intro! I go to aeroplanner . com using the EAA flight planning tool but it seems slow. Maybe it's just my computer or connection but it's kind of clunky.

Would you use this in the cockpit for approach plates, or would the light wash out the screen?

Yes, I would use this in the cockpit with a caveat.
Back lighting of the screen is more then adequate so sunshine alone will not prevent you from reading the screen above the clouds.
The problem is the screen is highly reflective so if you have it angled the wrong way, the reflections would prevents readability.
