The first and the last HST passing at speed in this video seem to have a different sound to the others... Is it because of the different engines used?
@4fsake Some HST's in early 2008 still had the old Paxman Valenta engines (the ones producing the high screaming sound), but most were fitted with the new MTU engines. The transition from Valenta to MTU was taking place at the time, hence the varying sounds of the HST's recorded here.
@4fsake Furthermore, this transition was taking place on the National Express (now East Coast) HST sets - the only full valenta powered HST here was the Grand Central set (the black one shooting through on the centre road).
Interesting question there andrewbarrett42. I don't know if it's anything to do with capacity or platform length; it could be either or both. But I'm sure the sets will be extended as demand increases. Don't know if this helps, but that's all I can say. Thanks for commenting.
I have indeed seen your (excellent) GWR 1984 videos. I was born in that year; wish I had been around before then though. I feel so cheated to have missed those years.
It's also a great pleasure to speak to you. Thanks for commenting and keep up the good work on your end!
Yeah, I'm not bothered about Valenta or MTU, though I must admit I will miss the distinct Valenta scream. I tried (as you will see here) to get what Valenta's I could hear screaming through Doncaster. Cheers again!
Cheers hst125matty. You're right about 080 being quiet, it was probably coasting or something. Between you and me though, I hope 080 will continue to dodge the MTU curse for some time!

Oh my god Dave! That HST at the beginning was really bombing it through! Doncaster is amazing, cant wait for this weekend!
Woolybak8 3 years ago
It sure was; the horn is also featured in my 'whistles and two tones vid', as is the one with the nearly all-silver HST.
theamateurbasher 3 years ago
Yeah thats the one Dave! Thought I recognised it!
Woolybak8 3 years ago
LOL! I could be making a sequel soon (maybe for my 200th vid, which is fast approaching)...

The first HST was going really fast through the station, why does the grand central HST only have six coaches?

The sight, smell and sound of a rushing train can attract some interest.

Don't forget about the rediculously small windows on the Pendo. 5*

They're even worse my friend, the toilets stink. Literally. The only time they look good is when a Virgin 57 Thunderbird is dragging them.

Hopefully CrossCountry will use HST's at some point soon. Thanks for commenting SwindonCable!
