  • U must b in you 40s? Have u heard the hmong saying about Mongolia?

  • @momdad it seems like u know alot about Hmong history, wat generation are u?

  • @oNetHaOboI

    First generation Hmong American.

  • @ thoj clan Hmong thao pepo were written as Tao in china I think so cuz my aunt was from china and that's how she spelled her last name

  • it's almost annoying, i know the histroy of the miao people more than my grand parents....but i barely do.

  • @kabvang

That is sad. My parents know little to nothing about our history, because they were poor and uneducated. Well, my dad received some education and could read/write in Lao and English, and he was also a soldier in the war. But... this does no justice, when all your history is oral tradition and whatever the current generation wants to make up. It's too bad the internet wasn't around back then. I spent my childhood not knowing ANYTHING...

  • where in the world do you get all these info??!!

i just cant seem to ever get my hands on these historical facts...i cant find any books in the library or any websites on the net...

everything just seems so mysterious and interesting...and I wanna know more.

    :D

  • @kabvang Nanchao which is now Yunnan Province was a Kingdom from northern Laos, northern Thailand, and north east Burma, north Vietnam and all of Yunnan. We are ancestors of the Tai Tribes that came from the Nanchao Kingdom , the Kingdom is kept alive by the Lao Kingdom who are ancestors of the Tai Tribes.Till this day Lao people call its people Tai or Lao.

  • @kabvang

sorry for the late reply... I've been doing lots of research. =)

  • @kabvang

Been doing research of my own. You can find documents in expense *ss books, or you can use Google Books to read partial content. They call it the "Shaker Wars", because the people who led the war were possessed by spirits. This was the reason for the war, or so the confessions says. I'm sure Han usury and predatory loans had something to do with it too. A cheaper alternative is "Insurgency and Social Disorder in Guizhou: The Miao Rebellion" by Robert D Jenks for $21.60 on Amazon.

  • i wonder whats the thao bak then was named?

  • thanks for sharing this...it's one of the most important thing i've learned from youtube. i love to search youtube, some reasons...good people know how to use the site educationally

  • Beautiful video clip and sceneries of the Southern Great Wall of China. Hmong/Miao has endures through pains and sorrows to be where we're at today. We must thank our ancestors for their love and pride. They fought for our rights and freedom. They wanted the best for us to survive through many battles and wars for thousands of years and we're still here today. Today, we all united, and united we stand. Together we are strong for peace and success for the future to come.

  • wow this is so interesting. so we did have a hmong king during the qin dynasty, which means qin shi huangdi was the emperor at that time..wish they would include all of this in american history books.

  • Wonderful clip, with all the pictures and the music in the background, really makes you feel what our ancestors must have felted with all the beautiful surroundings.

  • i thought Pae-wah was the last legendery Hmong leader?

  • is it true the the last name Chang today was not originally a hmong last name??

b/c one of my Chang friend's great great great grandfather is chinese...

  • There are 12 original Hmong clans. If your clan doesn't fall under any of the 12 original Hmong clans then your ancestors probably may have been Chinese or another ethnic group that assimilated into the Hmong culture.

  • what are the original 12 hmong clans?? this is sooo interesting...i wanna know our roots.

  • @kabvang it the last name cheng that is chinese not chang

  • 有悲伤的感觉

  • 凤凰 is a beautiful place,if i have chance,i will go to there

  • Yes, I would love to go visit Fenghuang as well. That will be my first place to visit if I ever visit my Miao people in China. we Miao in the states who ancestors left China hundred of years ago have folktale of the War in Hunan and Guizhou.

  • Miao people live in guizhou also came from hunan.凤凰 is also called 'Border Town',it is a beautiful palce,in history, it full of war.the wall, which called 'south great wall in china',is to separation of our people. This has become a history, but we should remember this period of history ,In order to avoid the same thing happen again

  • Amazing. As a western Miao who ancestors came from Yunnan, we don't have a name from Hunan or the place. We just know that there was a wall built by the Chinese to blocked us. Whenever a person die, we often refer to them as going back over the erecting wall. Even when a person die, we direct their soul North. It pointed out that our ancestors and roots lie somewhere North.

  • yes,it's true,it have formed a consensus in chian.

  • This music is awesome. If the music sounding

longer, higher volume and without other voice such la la in it, it would be the most reflecting music on earth. The Dragon is big

and Old city in slow motion, thats cool.

  • wow great video and information. Just I need for my project. Do you mind telling me where you the information?

  • Search hunan uprising in yahoo.

  • I was wondering if anyone knew where i could buy the movie "the blood drum" from? I must have it!!!

  • Did you make this movie? What's the song title called/from? It's great!

  • Zhouzhzh, it's exactly like you siad. There is a Chinese movie based on the history. It's called "The Blood Drum". It's sad how the Miao generals could betrayed their own people.

  • Regarding the history, Miao soldiers are actually one of the most excellent soldiers in Chinese history because they "walk in forests like walking on flat lands". Qing army led by ethnic Manchu generals suffered a huge loss at the begining. Later they realized that Miao army was too strong. So they used a trick suggested by an ethnic Han scholar to disintegrate Miao armies. Qing general then bribed Miao generals, who finally betrayed Wu, Bayue... Otherwise Miao army was not easy to be defeated.

  • Yes, there is a movie on the Miao Uprising in Hunan which is base on the event. Like what samlorson said, the movie is called "The Blood Drum". The movie took place in Hunan among the Eastern Miao... It is a very old Chinese movie. Bribery is the only way to defeat the Hmong, even my father tell stories of bribery. Nice info

  • Fenghuang is a really beautiful Miao town. A famous ethnic Miao/Hmong Chinese writer, Congwen Shen, wrote a touching and appealing love story happened in this town. The title of his novel is "Border City" (边城).

  • By the way, it is not a pure Miao town. Since Miao people and Tujia people mix in Hunan provice, you can also see Tujia buildings there. Sometimes you might see girls dressing in Miao costumes but they are not always Miao girls. Actually they could be Tujia girls. Also sometimes Miao girls might dress in Tujia costumes.

  • Yes, I notice that. It seems like the Miao influenced many ethnic groups according to what I've seen and observed. The Miao live peacefully among the Tujia in Hunan, The Bouyei and Dong in Guizhou and etc... The Miao however live the longest with the Yao. It makes me think because the Yao also live among the Miao in Southeast Asia. Thank for sharing.

  • Yes, she is Miao. she was born in Hunan, possibly Fenghuang.

  • forever the Hmong/Miao people. our history may never be forgotten. to this day, we still hold the name of our father's brother, Shi Huang Di who is known as Txiv Huab Tais. nice nice

  • wait...so shi huang do is our hmong king's brother?? can u elaborate on it?

  • This is a pretty nice clip and info. Thanks. Vu Pa Yia still remains in the Miao's history of a great hero.

  • Yes, my dad's elders used to talk about Wu Pa Yia. I used to hear stories all the time about our beloved Hunan Miao Leader. This shows that even after thousand years of separation, the Eastern Miao are indeed our people even though their language is quite different, traditions and etc... A+B=C this is how we connect our root and past.

  • Seems like you know a lot about the subject of Hmong heritage. Would you be able to clarify the relevancy of Wu Pa Yia and Vaaj Yim Leej? Are they the same person although Hmong from Laos has made him into a mythological figure?

  • Vaaj Yim Leej? I believe he is a Hmong actor. I should ask my father. He knows lots of Hmong stories.

  • You should also ask hmong chinese scholars.

Wu Pa Yia - Wu may be is his surname, Pa in Chinese is 8, Yia in Chinese is Mr. Wu Pa Yia is Mr. 8 of the Wu family.

Wu Pa Yia name translates very close to Vaaj Yim Leej though Hmong movie makers like to use that name on the title. Wu Pa Yia was referred to as King or Chief of Miao, so that covers the word Vaaj. Pa is Yim. Leej is the amount of people or Mr. Hmong in last century tends to ignore clan names, so Wu was out like Crazy Batchai.

  • awesome info..my bro's name is yim leej...=P no wonder he calls himself a king. lol!

  • Wu Pa Yia name in Hmong is Vue Pa Yia his last name was Vue

  • cool info...

  • Great information.I never knew that. All I knew was that Fenghuang is the hometown of the great Miao writer Shen Congwen.

  • I don't think Sheng Congwen was Miao, was he? Although located in the Miao heartland, Fenghuang was primarily a Han Chinese town, which started off as a military outpost.

  • Fenghuang was a town that the Miao once traded and buy silk from the local Han people. I believe Sheng Congwen is Han Chinese.

  • But we usually consider him Miao. His grandmother was Miao.

  • I see. Fenghuang is a very beautiful town. I would love to visit it one day. I know I will cry when I see my ancestors way of living. It been thousand of years, my dad still talk about the Hunan Rebellion.

  • beautiful videos. very calm and relaxing. the songtao miao are a very unique group of the miao people.

  • yes, these are the eastern miao. songtao is located in guizhou. fenghuang is located in hunan. the ghoxong are the remaining miao that did not fled during the hunan uprising.

  • oh? i thought they were the songtao miao. they dressing looked like it.

  • the eastern miao are known as the ghoxiong, they live near the border of guizhou and hunan. there are two type of ghoxiong, the southern and northern.

  • how sad that we hmong or miao lost alot of our land snif snif. i wish i can turn back into time and take control of china lol.

  • yes, we hmong did lost a lot of our land during the war.

  • wow, its amazing...great...thank you for sharing =)
