We are a proud nation, which, while sadly not sovereign, is still independent already in many respects, such as in Education and Judiciary (Scots Law). But also in culture, custom and state of mind, The Scottish people have always been independent thinkers, and Scotland is a nation entitled to resume her independence at will.

When James became king of England the two countries (ie Scotland and England) shared a monarch - just as the UK currently shares a monarch with Canada etc. However they remained two seperate kingdoms. It was during Queen Anne's reign in 1707 that the seperate kingdoms ceased to exist and a new single united kingdom of Great Britain was created.

Just as the seperate modern kingdoms of Canada and Australia share a monarch. Sovereignty of course with the modern UK constitutional monarchy doesn't actually reside with the monarch. The sovereignty of parliament is ultimately supreme - though not necessarily in Scotland where there has been precident of it being

Everyone knows that the monarch isn't. She is a figurehead with some hypothetical powers to keep parliament working should it need help. She reigns but doesn't rule. Even the Queen's Speech at the opening of parlaiment etc is written by politicians from the govt. She says what she's told to say.
