@Ascaithe I wouldn't exactly say the U.S. has "stagnated, never moved forward" (I assume that is the country you are referring to) They have been responsible for some of the most useful innovations that have ever benefited mankind, and all while remaining Imperial. Your arguments, along with most other "pro-metric" comments simply have no merit. By the way people (especially you chow) if you want to "thumb down" my comments, go ahead. Most people want to view "removed" comments. Curiosity.
@Ascaithe The irony is, I am not the one who is complacent, but you are. While I don't agree with metric in North America, and take issue with some Americans yearning to change (read my many previous comments), I don't believe anything should be forced on anyone, as was the case in Canada. You seem to. Metric was the answer to a question no one asked in Canada, because, again, they had NO problem with the old system. Maybe with age and wisdom you, and others, in time, will finally get it.
Rest assured people, if metric worked in Canada, I would be the first to promote it and give it just rewards, but it hasn't. Sorry to piss on the parade, Ascaithe, (and everyone else) but this isn't about conservatism, it's about being smart.
@Ascaithe Really? The only person opposed? Actually there have been a few, but I have been the only one so far that has given detailed, informative information on the changeover and why it would not be in the States interest to change. I have witnessed and experienced the "risk-taking" that our country (Canada) has taken and it has not worked. And how is measuring in Imperial an "impediment to progress"? Again, neither you or anyone else has answered my previous question. Re-read comments.
i think we should slowly start adopting the metric system. have kids in elementary learn and use it all throughout school, start making more products that use the metric system. then the kids that learned it in school might prefer metric over imperial. and want more products that use the metric system.
It is so silly that History and Discovery channels are NOT using metric. Do these channels realize how annoying this is to the rest of the world? USA should make an overt commitment to metric. We are ONE world. We want ONE system that will make communications easier.
@eMathSpace Amen. Please USA, for the sake of the rest of the world, for the sake of yourselves, CHANGE NOW to a more simpler system and abandon the complicated imperial system (over 2,000 units in the customary system).
@mainchow10 Again, I am merely giving a heads up to problems associated with conversion, with a bit of humor thrown in. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. No Canadian, young or old, uses it exclusively, whether some realize it or not, and we've had it for over 30 years. Doubly so for the U.S. It may be hard for you to admit this while taking your stand, but you, as an American, have to admit it's true. Remember the examples I gave about clothing/shoe stores, among other things?
Just reviewing previous comments and have noticed some of mine have received "too many negative votes". Amusing, but not surprising. The level of naivety is truly frightening.
What is wrong with telling someone your weight in pounds or how far you have to travel in miles? Give you a hint. Nothing. As much as all of you ( Americans for Metric) will hate to admit it (including you chow) you know Imperial off by heart (and use it), but, God forbid, if your Metric Association buddies should ever find out! "Nail them to the cross, goddamnit!", they would probably say. Let's all have a laugh, and a pint (litre) of brew over all of this nonsense and have a Merry Christmas!
Sadly aircraft built by US companies are still imperial. It is a pain for people fixing them. I grew up with parents who were raised in the imperial system. I am 100% metric by education and they are still 100% imperial, however without doubt this country is metric. The US will follow a similar trend. Once everything is posted either in metric or both schools will teach both systems for about five years, and then will start to drop the amount of imperial studied until eventually it is the no 1.
@mainchow10 The last time I had a conversation on this topic was in the late '90s, with a coin dealer, of all people. I was curious what the opinions were these days and went online. I had no idea what the reactions would be and at times regretted ever going on. I've shared viewpoints with people far and wide and vowed not to go back, but, surprise, returned. Like an addiction. And I'm usually good natured, with a life. The net is, quite possibly, the best yet the worst thing ever devised by man
@mainchow10 Are you not in any way bothered by the wording of his response? Please show some kind of understanding to what I'm trying to convey. Though we may disagree on the main topic, you have to agree that his "control the future" is awfully goddamned menacing. And I'm not just "pretty sure" but am positive the reason why Canada got mad about conversion was because, I repeat, they didn't want it!
It's rather disturbing, but not surprising on this site, that "mdma4life's" comment receives one of the top approvals. Lets hope that this type of cold, closeminded, totalitarian type rhetoric doesn't ever prevail in our society, or you may very well live to regret it. Guess he never heard of "respect your elders". While I'm sure some of you want to nail me to the cross, I have the balls to call it as it is (was), and still respect ones right to choice, regardless of my feelings towards Metric.
@mainchow10 All arguments aside, chow, I'm just giving the supporters to Metric a "heads-up" on what has happened in my country, Canada. While most of my posts, no doubt, tick people off, the truth is, it has not been the success the backers here thought it would be. I can't speak for other countries, but if I can make just one American think twice before signing up, well??? These posts are not written to "get under the skin", rather, to educate people from one who has had first hand experience.
Part 1: @rever65 Oh OK. I missed the point there. It's been roughly a month since your last comment and since then, I have much less urge to convert humans to metric and much more respect for everyone's measuring. But I still feel like the US should convert. I'm pretty sure the only reason Canada got mad was because the switch was so fast. The US is changing as we speak. Although we (the US) started with imperial, remember, metric was made legal somewhere in the 19th century.
Part 2: @rever65 Imperial soda bottles in the US are very close to extinct, imperial water bottles are becoming rare, (but the milk is an exception), and I've seen about 6 road signs that were in km, m and km/h that used to be in miles, feet, and mph (in my summer vacation lasting about a month). Thank the US metric association. If you want to use imperial, that's fine with me.
@mainchow10 While most people you talk to, who I am assuming are American, claim not to hate the Metric system, chances are they exclusively use, for the most part, standard measurement. If you feel fine using Metric, go for it. But I would give anything to see the reaction on the clerks face when you ask for a size 86 waist pant or a size 30 shoe!
@mainchow10 In regards to the Mars orbiter, what if the Captain had requested the data in joules and the "agency" in foot -pounds? Sounds more like a case of human error. You would still have 2 dead and $125 million down the drain regardless of the measurement.
@mainchow10 You did say it cost Americans "3 grand per American per year", and how is the U.S. spending "trillions relabeling everything to Imperial"? Your country was Imperial in the first place and was doing just fine with importing goods to Canada before we changed. Still are. Don't forget, before Canada converted, North America had no issues, we were on the same page. But costing "trillions"? How is trade not easy? Your country has been doing just fine with trade regardless. It's a non-issue
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Maybe the reason many Americans don't realize it's costing them "trillions" is because it's not occurring. Are there any Americans out there who can claim to having 3 grand deducted from their paycheck? Because of their measurement?!?
@rever65 Did I say Americans were charged 3 grand to keep using the imperial system? No. I said that the government is spending trillions on relabeling everything to imperial, tearing down any metric road signs for imperial (notably the ones near the Mexican border), converting all bottles to imperial, the loss of the Mars Orbiter in 1999, etc.. Most people I talk to tend to say they don't hate the metric system, which means they wouldn't mind I gave my height or weight in metric.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You have to admit, as painful as it may be, my (or anyone else's) preference to using feet and inches when building my back yard deck or bragging about the "12 pound" bass I just caught, leading to death and destruction and the downfall of my nation is utterly absurd!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If miles, pounds, feet, inches, etc. posed a threat to the United States, you can be assured, their government would have "flushed" Imperial down the toilet years ago. The myth that Imperial is costing the U.S. horrendous amounts of dollars is just that, a myth.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It doesn't cost the States anything to keep Imperial. What has killed the economy of North America recently is the greed of execs who decided that it was far cheaper to have their products manufactured in China, (initially Mexico), than in the U.S. or Canada. This decision has cost the jobs of countless Americans and Canadians. Your measurement isn't killing you. It's the chief execs who prefer to sacrifice the well being of their "own" in order to reap the benefits of "whored" out Chinese labor
@rever65 What about all the soda bottles? The water bottles? The illegal drugs? The metric road signs near the Mexican border? Are you really going to spend thousands (perhaps millions) to change all that?
@mainchow10 The U.S. will always be a leader in the sciences/tech, regardless what measurement they prefer to use. Have to admit, they've done pretty good so far. We were given the economic doom forecasts years ago if we didn't change. But our biggest trade partner was the States and North America's economy/productivity was booming after World War 2 for decades, ironically, when we were on the same page, measurement wise. Whatever happens, lets hope the Pres. takes all sides into account.
@rever65 What I meant to say was, not many Americans realize this, but there is a HUGE cost of keeping the imperial system ($1 trillion per year (3 grand per American per year (don't know why))). In 1999, a Mars orbiter burned up into the Martian atmosphere because the captain requested data to be in feet-pounds while the agency requested data to be in joules. $125 million down the drain along with deaths. :(
@mainchow10 One would think that youth would use Metric exclusively, but the country is still pretty divided, even with sign changes etc. If you want to see why I am not a big Trudeau fan, check out his interview during the 1970 October crisis (youtube) after he declared martial law. Classic Trudeau, arrogance and all. There were several innocent people detained during this period. Military "plucked them offthe streets. I don't even want to venture into that topic. It got quite ugly back then.
@rever65 I know you are not a big Trudeau fan. Back to the US, one of the two thing MUST happen. 1: Adaption of the metric system is inevitable. 2: The US will lose it's competitive edge in science and technology and economical failure will happen.
@mainchow10 Because Canada began with the old system, Metric has never completely taken hold. Unlike most of Europe. Except for maybe distances and temp.,(I still convert) most people I know just don't use it. For example, when I asked my 7 year old niece how tall she was, she gave her height in feet. I'm into old cars, and my friends mostly talk in terms of miles, weight of car in pounds etc. Come to think of it, I can't recall anyone who exclusively uses Metric. We know the "old" so well.
@rever65 But I went to a hotel in Canada for about 3 days very recently (this month) and I did not find any imperial signs on the way. Also, I thought everyone who was born after the metric conversion, used metric because then they would've never used imperial. Now imagine this: Barack Obama switching the US to metric with absolutely no regards of the publicity (similar to your prime minister). How would you and your friends and family react if that really happens?
@mainchow10 So you think you know all about Canada because you stayed here for 3 days. No I can tell you a lot of Canadian industries still use imperial. For example wood is still sold by inches and feet. The metric conversion kind of fizzled after Pier Trude was voted out of power. In fact when I was in school I was taught both systems.
@mainchow10 Chow, I do not savor arguing with other bloggers, but inevitably, it happens. I have been called a moron by an Australian and have had my info. called "stupid crap", by you. You have to admit, when you go against the grain on a site like this, with a majority of "pro Metric" posts, you will raise the ire of some. With the exception of Canada's late P.M., I respect the right to an opinion and hope that some of the things I have witnessed and learned will make one pause and think.
@mainchow10 I am glad you are beginning to see my point of view. I have no problem with freedom of choice. Use whatever you feel like. I am not trying to convert you or anyone else. But, after 30+years with Metric, Canada is still a dual system country with an emphasis on Imperial. After all of this time, it still has not caught on. Again, no one here had a problem with the old system. In the U.S., with 10 times the pop. it would prove a very costly mistake.
@rever65 I feel you. Back in school our teachers tried getting us to write script. I did not like it one bit. But metric is easier as it simplifies and speeds up all calculations just like it did in my very own contest. How many people do you know that has a huge problem with metric?
@mainchow10 Let's hope, for your own sake, in time, you will mature enough to understand that you don't come off looking good at all. Did I say Metric was invented here? Nope. I said it was the initial system utilized. Think before you post. I try to get people to see another side to the issue as opposed to telling them that they have "stupid crap". That's the difference between intelligence and ignorance.
@rever65 Everyone has some intellegence. And yes I think it's nice to see you try to get people to see another side to the issue. But we're talking about metric here. Metric is easy and I think you should know since your country uses it and because of my latest comment. NOW this is my last reply. Goodbye.
@rever65 If you haven't realized already, mostly everyone here is for the metric system. So, uh, yeah unless some on this site are hypocrites, they are "the real me". I am a true metric freak if I haven't mentioned already.
@mainchow10 Hit a nerve with you, chow? You have clearly proven my point how sensitive and abusive some of you get when faced with reason. Did I say Metric was "euro-trash", whatever that is? Nope. All I did was give you a taste of your own sarcasm. I'll defend ones right to choice, even if I disagree, without putting them down. Hardly anything I've posted has been addressed by you or anyone else, and yes, Metric, in North America, is foreign. We started out with Imperial. Didn't you learn that?
@rever65 The imperial system wasn't invented here. Who said that imperial was invented here? And no, the metric system is not foreign at all in North America. All but one (US) country uses it in this continent. And an additional detail to my first sentence, the creator of the imperial system is now part of the metric world and the imperial system is foreign to the rest of the world. Get your facts right.
@rever65 Hahaha ok. I am actually giving you reason and you are the one abusive and sensitive. Every time someone FOR the metric system writes a comment, you write like 2 or 4 comments opposing. So your argument backfired.
@mainchow10 Are you from North America? Your site doesn't indicate where you are from. If so, you are one of the very few who measure your height, weight, etc, in Metric. If not, disregard the message. What is your height, in Metric, and your weight, without consulting a conversion calculator, (sarcasm). It's your choice what you want to measure in, just respect ones right to use whatever they want. You may have a point, though. Your "manhood" in centimeters will impress the ladies! moresarcasm
@rever65 I don't have a site, and yes I actually do measure my height, weight, etc, in metric. Height: 180 cm, weight: 83 kg. I also use metric because I think my 15 cm long dick will satisfy more ladies than my 6 inch dick. You are a hypocrite for thinking metric is euro-trash when the reality is, the imperial system is euroshit. You say the metric system is foreign, the imperial system is foreign. Learn something about your stupid crap before making an argument.
I don't see why the metric system is so difficult. I measure my height, weight/mass, speed, distance I travel every day, beverages I consume in metric all the time. I am a true metric freak
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Why the hell does everyone care was WE do? Jesus Christ, people complain about America for no reason. NO we don't want to use your metric system. NO we dont want to play YOUR football, we like ours just fine. NO we dont like cricket.
NO, WE DONT WANT TO BE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!! You like metric then go ahead and use it Im perfectly fine with imperial.
@BrianGriffin66 Oh, and by the way, "horsepower" won't cut it if your talking cars, you must use "kilowatt" power if you are a "true" Metric freak. Like I've said on this site, don't just "talk the talk", but actually DO what you say (believe in), or risk looking like a "follower" (sheep).
@BrianGriffin66 Well, what's taking you? Jokes aside, ( last comment of mine), read what I've written, and see if you still want to live in a "metricated country". Living in America, you do not use Metric, and I would assume, have no trouble with your current system. If you cherish Metric so much, make damn sure you measure your height, weight, shoe size, waist size, speed, distance you travel, temperature etc. in Metric, or be a hypocrite like many on this site. What is so "hard" about Imp???
While Metric was made a STANDARD, in Canada, by Trudeau, the public's opinion was ignored, thus the reason I mentioned the democratic process in earlier posts. I find it hard to take when one man has the power to sell a country this " bill of goods" and totally disregard opposition to it. When all was said and done, with the exception of kilometers and Celsius, most Canadians still use Imperial to a large degree, and not just in figures of speech. I would strongly suspect the same for the U.S.
The argument isn't about preference: You can use whatever measure you prefer till the end of time. It's about an official STANDARD, just as there are spelling standards, and so on. So, a can of Coke can be nominally "12 ounces" while being officially 350 mL (or whatever).
It's my suspicion that when metric takes hold in the U.S., imperial measures will stay as common figures of speech: e.g., to "walk a mile in his shoes." I suspect also that yards will remain in sports, making them unique.
I can easily visualize "200 lbs.", I can visualize "6 feet", I can visualize "1 inch", I can also visualize and feel "70 miles an hour". Hell, I can also visualize 1 ounce (as in a "shot glass"!). Now please, you "pro Metric preachers", why must I change something I feel good about, something I know and hold dear to my heart? What you all will never understand is that it's not about what "everybody" else is doin', but what you ENJOY, what you feel comfortable with. You will never see the light.
I can't help but notice how many "pro Metric" bloggers get touchy and abusive when someone comes along and throws some reason and common sense their way. Again, while my posts are emotionally fueled, I speak from experience as opposed to "seat of the pants" observations you may find on this site. You will never find me calling a fellow blogger I disagree with a "moron" or similar put down. Tip. Think before you post, and you will likely come across as someone with INTELLIGENCE as opposed to???
@rever65 You seem to be the only person opposed to a metric changeover on here. Conservative, complacent, non-risk taking attitudes are one of the biggest impediments to progress. Yes there will be an initial investment- any big, sweeping, yet ultimately beneficial change requires some risk and investment (the very definition of investment)- or would you rather society just stagnated, never moving forward?
Oh, and by the way, speaking of "Metric time". In 1983, my city, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was in the process of converting all signs to "Metric time". Example, "No parking from 8:00 AM-4:00 PM", became," 0800-1600". This was always considered "military time", but in a "Metric country", became "Metric time". This is the type of ludicrous bullshit that prevailed after my country became "Metric". How many people do you know that use "military" or "Metric" time, other than the military???
As a Canadian, I have heard all of the rhetoric. The "rest of the world is Metric", and "it uses 10s, so it's easier", nonsense. Once you change, people, you CAN'T go back. My teachers tried to convert us, in the 70's, and at the end of the day, we all looked at each other and asked, WHY!? At the age of 10! Get off of the hypocritical bandwagon and enjoy the fact that you are one country that said, SCREW YOU, we like our measurement, we feel comfortable with it, and were not gonna change!!!
I can't help but notice how many "pro Metric" bloggers talk the talk, but can't "walk the walk". I mean, seriously, you claim to hate Imperial so much, yet you still measure your height in feet and your weight in pounds, not to mention buying your shoes in inches and your pants in inches, among many other things, c'mon, step up to the plate and admit that you should bloody well leave well enough ALONE!!!!
@imortalsappy You seem to have a deep hatred for the Yanks, mate. Maybe if you resolve your differences, you might be able to think with a clearer head.
@imortalsappy By the way, many US and Canadian companies handed China the economy on a silver platter by re-locating most of their manufacturing bases there in order to save money. LOTS OF IT. The greedy get greedier. It's far cheaper to have your goods produced by the Chinese than by your "own" workers. It wasn't always this way. Most of our goods used to made in North America. I don't agree with it, but it's the way it is. Judging from your comments, I'm giving YOU a break, NOW GET EDUCATED!
@imortalsappy What is your basis of "American(s) are too proud of a system..." ??? It has nothing to do with pride! They were RAISED with it! They KNOW it! They still USE it! You obviously need some serious assistance in understanding this. Excuse me, I should have known, your "educated". Forgive me. I base opinions on a straight forward, common sense approach as opposed to "knee jerk" reaction. State some solid reasons why a country of 300 million should convert a system they presently KNOW!
@imortalsappy Struck a nerve with you, sappy? Truth hurts, don't it. I have provided several "educated" examples to prove my point, few of which have been answered, I might add, by you or anyone else. What have you added, other than a few conversions which anyone can look up and cynicism? Did I say the US invented the Imperial system? Nope. While some of my wording is emotionally charged, I'll defend ones right to their opinion, whether I agree or not. Moron!? C'mon! You respect me! Thank you.
@mdma4life "It wouldn't cost much to convert". Sign changes alone (speed limit/distance) cost Canadians millions for a measurement they never had a problem with. Though I was young, I can't recall anyone yearning to know how far a location was in kms, or their speed in km. The point is, the US has 10 times the population(dense-not spread out like Canada) and sign conversion costs will be staggering. MANY MORE SIGNS. Why should they change this 1 thing that they all know well???
@mdma4life Once a country converts, they are obliged, by law to convert all tooling of their manufacturing equipment to Metric. Since our largest trading partner is the US, the cost was very substantial, particularly when no one asked for it. By saying, "others of my generation will control the future", comes off as sounding cold and dictatorial. If Imperial was so bad, why do many still prefer using it? I hope the freedom of choice is still allowed once your gen starts to "control the future".
@mdma4life Though you were born into it, do you really measure everything in Metric, such as your height? C'mon. The point is that I, along with the majority of Canadians did not want the change. We knew and liked the old system, and many including people your age and younger, still use Imperial to a large degree. Do you walk into a shoe store and ask for a size 30 (12 in)? I'm far from retired and judging from your comments, you don't show much compassion/understanding for the aged.
Whether discussing measurement or any other topic, if the population is familiar and comfortable with something, and your government decides to change this, with no regard to opposition, the democratic process goes out the window. This is what happened in Canada in the 70s. The people felt no need to change, had no problem with Imperial and DID NOT want the conversion. How hard is this to understand? Would you "pro Metric Americans" accept or chastise those who don't wish to change? FREETOCHOOSE
I'm a 28 year old Canadian (so what you were referring too occurred just before I was born) ,and you don't know how grateful I am that my country is metric and that I learned metric, right from an early age I could not see the sense in imperial, it was not linear, scalable, etc.
The people who bitched in the 70s are now old and retired and have no impact on future, in their place are the scientists and others of my generation who are actually the ones that will control the future.
I just can't figure why anyone who was raised with Imperial, and use the existing system regularly, bitch about converting. Because most of the world has? It is not as though the US had Metric for the first 200 years, then converted, and now wants back again. You people were born into it! Forget 10s, do you actually hate measuring in miles, feet, inches, pounds etc. so much that you would rather convert, at least to the tune of billions, and re-learn everything you were taught? REAL SMART!
It wouldn't cost much to convert. All the successful and expensive to convert industries in the US deal with international partners, which means they are obligated to be versed in both metric and imperial (since most countries are metric).
The cost would be in education, which Canada showed in the 70's isn't really that bad, and considering how badly US education is being destroyed right now, this degenerative change should be the more pressing educational issue.
@rever65 China have converted quite easily and their culture makes Americas short existence look pathetic. Give me a break and get educated. Anyway with the USA weakening and the rest of the world getting stronger, everyday brings the time closer to where you are going to have to get re-educated. American arrogance is going to bite it in the but. Remember the USA did not invent the imperial system it just got it from its old rulers - ENGLAND. Moron!
If you know it off by heart, why change? Seriously, do you actually use Metric on a day to day basis? Quick, without consulting a calculator, what is your height in meters, now your weight, now how many kilometers to the liter does your car get. I'll repeat, if you have not read all of my posts, the theory of Metric sounds simple, the application is something else. Why change something you KNOW! Cadadian's were "disgruntled" because their protests were ignored by their "leader" who didn't care.
The reason why Canadians seem disgruntled with the metric system is because alot of you are trying to convert metric units back to imperial. This is ridiculous!! just use the metric units entirely and you will see how wonderful the system is. 1 litre of water = 1kg = 1000cm3. Water freezes at 0C and boils at 100C. Other than temperature the everyday metric system has only 3 units, litres, metres, and grams. I mean seriously i know the imperial system off by heart and its very outdated.
One other side effect. Several years after conversion('82-'84) many consumer products began to display, "NEW METRIC SIZE" on their labels, as though this was supposed to be something good. Everything from steak sauce to vodka had these labels. The catch, these products all "shrunk" in size, but the prices didn't. That seemed odd. Who was in bed with who? It's so much deeper than the naive "it works in 10s, so it's better" line. I can't fathom the nightmare that will ensue if you convert.
Last post(hopefully) By having our system changed, our identity seemed to change as well. I'm not trying to be patriotically dramatic, but anyone who remembers Canada before may agree. It's very hard to explain and I don't expect many to dig what the Hell I mean, but something changed, and not for the better. When you change something as major as measurement, with many people still "half and half", it does something. We also changed our national anthem. What does that say? Lost identity. Sad
Before any of you respond to my comments, read them over (and over) carefully and ask yourself why someone would devote this much time to comment on something seemingly as trivial as the Metric system. Though I am only 42, I remember the old system quite well, still use it and know many who do. It bothers me, that in a "democracy", supposedly with choice, we were made to choke on this bile, with a "screw you" attitude from our "leader". I'm mostly a fun luvin dude, but this still BURNS MY ASS.
Shortly after Trudeau came to power in '68, articles began appearing in magazines(every now and then)calling for the "need to go Metric", or "why we must change now". Very similar to what I've heard from the States for years (and on posts like this one). Not many here took it seriously. The Trudeau government utilized these techniques any way they could in an attempt to "brainwash" the public into believing that it was the only choice. The "everybody else is" was used as well. BEWARE PEOPLE.
Another example. A father of a friend of mine in the '80's was the head city engineer for roadways in Edmonton, Alberta, Can. and said they would not replace their Imperial marked measuring equipment with Metric replacements because of the hideously expensive cost. Why should they? They didn't bitch about the existing equipment. But it's THE LAW. Sign change conversions cost Canadians needless dollars. For what? NO ONE, in my lifetime, ever bitched about speeds/distances in MILES!
Another blog you "pro Metric Americans" may want to think about from "an anti Metric Canadian". In 1980, shortly after our gasoline pumps were converted to litres(1979), a gas station owner refused to convert his pumps and sell in litres. He had long time customers who preferred gallons(why should he change???) 2 government agents pulled up in a Chevy Citation (I was 11 when this appeared on the news) and proceeded to cap his pumps. What a wonderful, free choice democracy we live in! FUCK THAT!
@skyblue9696 Why do you feel America has to convert just because the rest of the planet is Metric? Do you not understand your own system? I still remember Imperial very well and wished to Christ we never changed. Do you measure your height in meters and you weight in kilograms? Thought so. NOBODY DOES HERE! Whenever you are asked for your weight here (getting drivers license for example) people give it in pounds and the agency has to convert. It's the law. BIG BROTHER WATCHING!
For all of the "pro Metric" bloggers, if the leader of Germany(for example)imposed Imperial measure on their citizens, they would be PISSED. For good reason, they have used Metric for multiple decades and are comfortable with it. In Canada, during the '70's, prime minister Trudeau forced this on his citizens and didn't give a FUCK what anyone felt. Canada had utilized Imperial for over 100 YEARS and was comfortable with it. Trudeau was known for giving the finger to detractors. A TRUE ASSHOLE
@americadashi Think LONG and HARD for what you wish for. Metric cost Canadians untold MILLIONS of dollars for something they never asked for. No one had a problem with the existing system. NO ONE. Except an arrogant, pseudo intellectual by the name of TRUDEAU who rammed this shit through Parliament with absolutely no concern for the overwhelming opposition to this nonsense. It will literally cost you Americans BILLIONS of dollars in conversion. USE YOUR HEADS! PROTEST NOW! Hardly anyone did here
In theory, Metric sounds simple, in practice, it's a PAIN IN THE ASS. Certain mediums, such as the medical and scientific communities, need very specific, finite modes of measurement, such as Metric. Fine. But when you try to integrate it into the mainstream, it SUCKS! I still find myself trying to figure out how much 3 millimeters of rain is. Constantly converting when reading a news article in the paper or hearing something on the news. It was, and is, totally needless.
As a Canadian who has had to endure the lovely metric system for years, I say DON'T do it. Our Prime Minister at the time, Trudeau, in his drive to Europeanize Canada, forced it on us. NO ONE had a problem with miles, feet, inches, pounds etc. before the conversion. In fact, everyone I know, young and old, still measure their weight in pounds and their height in feet and inches. Our sporting events such as football are still in yards and cooking is still done in Imperial. DON'T CONVERT!
Do any of you guys realize that the US looks like a fucking retard because we're the only country that doesn't use Metric? For you people who think we should keep the English System because it's unique to our country, FUCK YOU! Most Americans are brainwashed into thinking our system is better then Metric! I mean really, what's easier to remember: 5,280 feet in a mile or 1,000 meters in a kilometer? Same thing with Fahrenheit! While the US uses Fahrenheit, the rest of the world uses Celsius!
The Imperial system is an unique system of the Anglo-Saxon world. It exist for decades and even in the US it, s been under fire. That,s a pity because metric is a trick of the NWO to created one world domination. No cultures, no traditions, one grey tasteless world....
Always amuses me when US officials use assumptions as fact. " SI metric units are now the sole legal units of measurement in Australia" and have been for a very long time. Not getting into the debate, as there really isn't any logical point to do so. Adaption is inevitable, or failure eventually follows.
Yes, we changed effortlessly 41 years ago here in Australia because we were lucky enough not to have a paranoid President who thought that the Communists did nothing right. Well, they DID do something right - they employed the SI (metric) system 100% and never touched the English 'system'. The sooner Americans realise this, the sooner you can get on and make real progress by ditching the "customary units" ASAP and start using the metric system. Other countries had a reason - it's so much EASIER!
Its hard for 300 million people to adopt a new system. We in the US are so use to looking at Miles, its weird to see KM. So there is really no point in converting the Metric system. Plus BOTH Systems are as accurate as another. But for those of you in the US, if you are majoring in Science or Engineering, you will have to learn the Metric System!
@wtong89 No it's not. It's a lot easier than you think. Australia changed overnight in the 70's, they just changed all the road signs and everything, and they had no problems what so ever. And trust me, there were countries with way more than 300mill people that did the convertion.
And there is no point in converting? Do you know big of a burden it is? Probably not for Americans because you never leave your own freakin country, or interact with others, but it's annoying as hell, trust me!!
"(CNN) NASA lost a 125 million Mars orbiter because a Lockheed Martin engineering team used English units of measurement while the agencys team used the more conventional metric system for a key spacecraft operation, according to a review finding released Thursday"
@cubbie2o2o I strongly disagree. We need to switch to metric, unless you want the government to keep spending a crapload of money in only 3 days. If you read my 5th latest comment (including this one), you would see that.
The only reason the Metric System hasn't been adopted is because we'd have to spend Trillions converting every sign to Metric. BUT, the Metric system is SO MUCH EASIER TO CONVERT BETWEEN MILLIMETRES, METRES, KILOMETRES etc.! (XD). Every single measurement is a tenth of the next one... Millimetre (10th of a Centimetre), Centimetre (10th of a Decimetre), Decimetre (10th of a Metre), Metre (10th of a Decametre), Decametre (10th of a Centimetre), Centimetre (10th of a Kilometre)... Etc... SO EASY!
I do support the metric system, but what about everything in TV, filming, songs, road signs, etc.,? Do you know how much time and work that will take to change that?
...plus we are running out of time to switch to metric because the government is wasting money (just like I told you in the comment below) and 10/10/10 already passed.
Americans should realize that the government is wasting $1 trillion a year keeping the imperial system and switching signs is only $100 million so if you think about it, you're actually gonna be SAVING money WHEN you switch.
Sorry, the Fed DOT no longer fund any Metric road signs. Why? Because the states refuse to go Metric. Why? Because the Fed. refuse to mandate it. Why? Because Congress are a bunch of MORONS.
Sorry, companies/industry is already paying the price to go Metric plus paying to still use Imperial System. They are currently using TWO SYSTEMS, they are over paying. They have two sets of incompatible tools and hardware. Now if they only used one system, METRIC, they would be actually saving money.
Why do we need to go metric? We already use it in science. Hell, it only simplifies science calculations. I mean, am I supposed to go through all my recipes and change everything to metric so its faster?
And btw, i dont think the rest of the world should want America to become even BETTER at globalizing
The metric system is better, but I still like our kinda out of date system. We can't change, that's like trying to change the national language of a country and expect everyone to know it in a month. Everything is based off our standard system, so you would need to change maps, signs, books, a couple of generations of people. Let's leave. It like this: us does it's thing and people like me who use both can communicate things
america is retarded! quit ur pirate foot stones pounds pints gallons what the fuck yards bla bla bla crap and convert NOOOW to a system that makes sense and is VERY easy to learn
The only reason we use the english system is because we used to be an english colony. The United Kingdom invented the imperial system and even THEY abandoned their OWN measurement system. Why can't you just keep an inchworm an inchworm and use metric? Why can't you just it a worm? WHY DO YOU THINK THE IMPERIAL SYSTEM BETTER? HUH!?!? I didn't think so. I already switched to metric and it caused me no problems to this day. Stubborn american people.
@mainchow10 Well, our government wasn't too smart because we could have switched to driving on the proper side of the road like in the US. We were silly enough to copy Britain is almost every walk of life. Even though everything went metric, people in Ireland still relate to distances in miles and yards. Many tradesmen use feet and inches too. In Ireland, an automobile bought after 2005 must have km/h only odometers.
@Highwaycrazy I just hope the US completely goes metric. 3 new people are for metrication in the US, combined with the catastrophic cost of not being metric which is $1 trillion per year, the US will likely go metric by 2020 or around that date.
@mainchow10 I agree. At the time, I think we spent 9 million EUR on the changeover. We use the same diamond road signs as the US and I think they're much nicer than the triangular ones that most of Europe uses. Our 'parking' signs are the same as the US as well.
i come from Sweden, so we have used metric for as longer than i have been alive. But when designing buildings and other large things i do use inches because almost all measurements can be divided in 3. That's the only reason i use them
@americadashi "Uploaded by WashingtonPost on 12 Mar 2009" Could you give me the metric date for that please? Oh, sorry! You can't! Metric can't do time and even the metric mafia date their posts in the traditional mode. Pathetique! pwned by your own post.
@Vot63 metric time is stupid because time measurement it works in conjunction with trigonometry and planetary rotation and position, a very complicated area of measurements.
weight and distance is easily standardised using a metric system since imperial measurements are completely arbitrary and needlessly complicated.
AND EVEN IF not using decimal time is hyppocritical, it still doesn't undermine the fact that metric will always be better than imperial
@CaptainFluffy6644 How does your conclusion that metric is "ALWAYS" better, square with your admission that metric time is crap? That type of obvious contradiction is the result of fanaticism not reason.
I love how the US seems to want to pick a system that's so much more complex and feel the need to prove that they are unique. Get over it; the Imperial system is grossly outdated and there are some things you can't even measure with it.
@navylaks2 True, but I am referring to the units most commonly used in North America, which, with the exception of gallons, were virtually the same.
rever65 5 days ago
Wouldn't it provide 1000s if not millions of jobs making the switch i see no reason not to. For your own good go metric
navylaks2 6 days ago
@Ascaithe I wouldn't exactly say the U.S. has "stagnated, never moved forward" (I assume that is the country you are referring to) They have been responsible for some of the most useful innovations that have ever benefited mankind, and all while remaining Imperial. Your arguments, along with most other "pro-metric" comments simply have no merit. By the way people (especially you chow) if you want to "thumb down" my comments, go ahead. Most people want to view "removed" comments. Curiosity.
rever65 2 weeks ago
@Ascaithe The irony is, I am not the one who is complacent, but you are. While I don't agree with metric in North America, and take issue with some Americans yearning to change (read my many previous comments), I don't believe anything should be forced on anyone, as was the case in Canada. You seem to. Metric was the answer to a question no one asked in Canada, because, again, they had NO problem with the old system. Maybe with age and wisdom you, and others, in time, will finally get it.
rever65 2 weeks ago
Rest assured people, if metric worked in Canada, I would be the first to promote it and give it just rewards, but it hasn't. Sorry to piss on the parade, Ascaithe, (and everyone else) but this isn't about conservatism, it's about being smart.
rever65 2 weeks ago
@Ascaithe Really? The only person opposed? Actually there have been a few, but I have been the only one so far that has given detailed, informative information on the changeover and why it would not be in the States interest to change. I have witnessed and experienced the "risk-taking" that our country (Canada) has taken and it has not worked. And how is measuring in Imperial an "impediment to progress"? Again, neither you or anyone else has answered my previous question. Re-read comments.
rever65 2 weeks ago
i think we should slowly start adopting the metric system. have kids in elementary learn and use it all throughout school, start making more products that use the metric system. then the kids that learned it in school might prefer metric over imperial. and want more products that use the metric system.
travman305 2 weeks ago
It is so silly that History and Discovery channels are NOT using metric. Do these channels realize how annoying this is to the rest of the world? USA should make an overt commitment to metric. We are ONE world. We want ONE system that will make communications easier.
eMathSpace 3 weeks ago
@eMathSpace Amen. Please USA, for the sake of the rest of the world, for the sake of yourselves, CHANGE NOW to a more simpler system and abandon the complicated imperial system (over 2,000 units in the customary system).
mainchow10 2 weeks ago
Open question to anyone. What is the matter with telling someone your weight in pounds or distances in miles?
rever65 4 weeks ago
@rever65
The thing is there aren't just one type of pound or mile there are several, so you would actually have to be specific
navylaks2 6 days ago
@mainchow10 Again, I am merely giving a heads up to problems associated with conversion, with a bit of humor thrown in. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. No Canadian, young or old, uses it exclusively, whether some realize it or not, and we've had it for over 30 years. Doubly so for the U.S. It may be hard for you to admit this while taking your stand, but you, as an American, have to admit it's true. Remember the examples I gave about clothing/shoe stores, among other things?

@rever65 Again, happy 2012!

Just reviewing previous comments and have noticed some of mine have received "too many negative votes". Amusing, but not surprising. The level of naivety is truly frightening.
rever65 1 month ago
What is wrong with telling someone your weight in pounds or how far you have to travel in miles? Give you a hint. Nothing. As much as all of you ( Americans for Metric) will hate to admit it (including you chow) you know Imperial off by heart (and use it), but, God forbid, if your Metric Association buddies should ever find out! "Nail them to the cross, goddamnit!", they would probably say. Let's all have a laugh, and a pint (litre) of brew over all of this nonsense and have a Merry Christmas!

@rever65
1)Why do you care what other people/countries do?
2)Please back up your claim that the pro-metric Americans use imperial.
Have a happy new year! :)
mainchow10 1 month ago
Sadly aircraft built by US companies are still imperial. It is a pain for people fixing them. I grew up with parents who were raised in the imperial system. I am 100% metric by education and they are still 100% imperial, however without doubt this country is metric. The US will follow a similar trend. Once everything is posted either in metric or both schools will teach both systems for about five years, and then will start to drop the amount of imperial studied until eventually it is the no 1.

mainchow10 3 months ago
@mainchow10 The last time I had a conversation on this topic was in the late '90s, with a coin dealer, of all people. I was curious what the opinions were these days and went online. I had no idea what the reactions would be and at times regretted ever going on. I've shared viewpoints with people far and wide and vowed not to go back, but, surprise, returned. Like an addiction. And I'm usually good natured, with a life. The net is, quite possibly, the best yet the worst thing ever devised by man
rever65 3 months ago
@mainchow10 Are you not in any way bothered by the wording of his response? Please show some kind of understanding to what I'm trying to convey. Though we may disagree on the main topic, you have to agree that his "control the future" is awfully goddamned menacing. And I'm not just "pretty sure" but am positive the reason why Canada got mad about conversion was because, I repeat, they didn't want it!
rever65 3 months ago
@rever65 This has been going on for far too long so I'm just going to, after months of arguing, finally end this argument.
mainchow10 3 months ago
It's rather disturbing, but not surprising on this site, that "mdma4life's" comment receives one of the top approvals. Lets hope that this type of cold, closeminded, totalitarian type rhetoric doesn't ever prevail in our society, or you may very well live to regret it. Guess he never heard of "respect your elders". While I'm sure some of you want to nail me to the cross, I have the balls to call it as it is (was), and still respect ones right to choice, regardless of my feelings towards Metric.
rever65 3 months ago
@rever65 mdma4life's comment is in fact very correct. Very fast response BTW.
mainchow10 3 months ago
@mainchow10 All arguments aside, chow, I'm just giving the supporters to Metric a "heads-up" on what has happened in my country, Canada. While most of my posts, no doubt, tick people off, the truth is, it has not been the success the backers here thought it would be. I can't speak for other countries, but if I can make just one American think twice before signing up, well??? These posts are not written to "get under the skin", rather, to educate people from one who has had first hand experience.
rever65 4 months ago

If you want to use imperial, that's fine with me.
mainchow10 3 months ago
@mainchow10 While most people you talk to, who I am assuming are American, claim not to hate the Metric system, chances are they exclusively use, for the most part, standard measurement. If you feel fine using Metric, go for it. But I would give anything to see the reaction on the clerks face when you ask for a size 86 waist pant or a size 30 shoe!
rever65 4 months ago
@mainchow10 In regards to the Mars orbiter, what if the Captain had requested the data in joules and the "agency" in foot -pounds? Sounds more like a case of human error. You would still have 2 dead and $125 million down the drain regardless of the measurement.
rever65 4 months ago
@mainchow10 You did say it cost Americans "3 grand per American per year", and how is the U.S. spending "trillions relabeling everything to Imperial"? Your country was Imperial in the first place and was doing just fine with importing goods to Canada before we changed. Still are. Don't forget, before Canada converted, North America had no issues, we were on the same page. But costing "trillions"? How is trade not easy? Your country has been doing just fine with trade regardless. It's a non-issue
rever65 4 months ago

Maybe the reason many Americans don't realize it's costing them "trillions" is because it's not occurring. Are there any Americans out there who can claim to having 3 grand deducted from their paycheck? Because of their measurement?!?
rever65 5 months ago
@rever65 Did I say Americans were charged 3 grand to keep using the imperial system? No. I said that the government is spending trillions on relabeling everything to imperial, tearing down any metric road signs for imperial (notably the ones near the Mexican border), converting all bottles to imperial, the loss of the Mars Orbiter in 1999, etc.. Most people I talk to tend to say they don't hate the metric system, which means they wouldn't mind I gave my height or weight in metric.

You have to admit, as painful as it may be, my (or anyone else's) preference to using feet and inches when building my back yard deck or bragging about the "12 pound" bass I just caught, leading to death and destruction and the downfall of my nation is utterly absurd!

If miles, pounds, feet, inches, etc. posed a threat to the United States, you can be assured, their government would have "flushed" Imperial down the toilet years ago. The myth that Imperial is costing the U.S. horrendous amounts of dollars is just that, a myth.
rever65 5 months ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
It doesn't cost the States anything to keep Imperial. What has killed the economy of North America recently is the greed of execs who decided that it was far cheaper to have their products manufactured in China, (initially Mexico), than in the U.S. or Canada. This decision has cost the jobs of countless Americans and Canadians. Your measurement isn't killing you. It's the chief execs who prefer to sacrifice the well being of their "own" in order to reap the benefits of "whored" out Chinese labor
rever65 5 months ago
@rever65 What about all the soda bottles? The water bottles? The illegal drugs? The metric road signs near the Mexican border? Are you really going to spend thousands (perhaps millions) to change all that?
mainchow10 5 months ago
@rever65 Trade is not easy with America using the imperial system while the rest of the world uses metric.
mainchow10 5 months ago

mainchow10 6 months ago
@mainchow10 One would think that youth would use Metric exclusively, but the country is still pretty divided, even with sign changes etc. If you want to see why I am not a big Trudeau fan, check out his interview during the 1970 October crisis (youtube) after he declared martial law. Classic Trudeau, arrogance and all. There were several innocent people detained during this period. Military "plucked them offthe streets. I don't even want to venture into that topic. It got quite ugly back then.
rever65 6 months ago
@rever65 I know you are not a big Trudeau fan. Back to the US, one of the two thing MUST happen. 1: Adaption of the metric system is inevitable. 2: The US will lose it's competitive edge in science and technology and economical failure will happen.
mainchow10 6 months ago
@mainchow10 Because Canada began with the old system, Metric has never completely taken hold. Unlike most of Europe. Except for maybe distances and temp.,(I still convert) most people I know just don't use it. For example, when I asked my 7 year old niece how tall she was, she gave her height in feet. I'm into old cars, and my friends mostly talk in terms of miles, weight of car in pounds etc. Come to think of it, I can't recall anyone who exclusively uses Metric. We know the "old" so well.
rever65 6 months ago
@rever65 But I went to a hotel in Canada for about 3 days very recently (this month) and I did not find any imperial signs on the way. Also, I thought everyone who was born after the metric conversion, used metric because then they would've never used imperial. Now imagine this: Barack Obama switching the US to metric with absolutely no regards of the publicity (similar to your prime minister). How would you and your friends and family react if that really happens?
mainchow10 6 months ago

With the exception of Canada's late P.M., I respect the right to an opinion and hope that some of the things I have witnessed and learned will make one pause and think.
rever65 6 months ago
@mainchow10 I am glad you are beginning to see my point of view. I have no problem with freedom of choice. Use whatever you feel like. I am not trying to convert you or anyone else. But, after 30+years with Metric, Canada is still a dual system country with an emphasis on Imperial. After all of this time, it still has not caught on. Again, no one here had a problem with the old system. In the U.S., with 10 times the pop. it would prove a very costly mistake.
rever65 6 months ago
@rever65 I feel you. Back in school our teachers tried getting us to write script. I did not like it one bit. But metric is easier as it simplifies and speeds up all calculations just like it did in my very own contest. How many people do you know that has a huge problem with metric?

The following takes place at a world tournament.
Offical: Alright today we will have a contest. English? How many fl. oz. would it take to fill up a cubic foot?
English: Uh-oh. *gets all sweaty* Ummm, is it 6?
Offical: WRONG!!! Metric, how many liters would it take to fill up a cubic meter?
Metric: 1,000.
Offical: CORRECT!!!
Announcer: METRIC WINS!!!!!!!!

Didn't you learn that?
rever65 6 months ago
@rever65 The imperial system wasn't invented here. Who said that imperial was invented here? And no, the metric system is not foreign at all in North America. All but one (US) country uses it in this continent. And an additional detail to my first sentence, the creator of the imperial system is now part of the metric world and the imperial system is foreign to the rest of the world. Get your facts right.
mainchow10 6 months ago

Your "manhood" in centimeters will impress the ladies! moresarcasm

I would strongly suspect the same for the U.S.
rever65 6 months ago
The argument isn't about preference: You can use whatever measure you prefer till the end of time. It's about an official STANDARD, just as there are spelling standards, and so on. So, a can of Coke can be nominally "12 ounces" while being officially 350 mL (or whatever).
It's my suspicion that when metric takes hold in the U.S., imperial measures will stay as common figures of speech: e.g., to "walk a mile in his shoes." I suspect also that yards will remain in sports, making them unique.
themindswitness 6 months ago
I can easily visualize "200 lbs.", I can visualize "6 feet", I can visualize "1 inch", I can also visualize and feel "70 miles an hour". Hell, I can also visualize 1 ounce (as in a "shot glass"!). Now please, you "pro Metric preachers", why must I change something I feel good about, something I know and hold dear to my heart? What you all will never understand is that it's not about what "everybody" else is doin', but what you ENJOY, what you feel comfortable with. You will never see the light.
rever65 6 months ago
I can't help but notice how many "pro Metric" bloggers get touchy and abusive when someone comes along and throws some reason and common sense their way. Again, while my posts are emotionally fueled, I speak from experience as opposed to "seat of the pants" observations you may find on this site. You will never find me calling a fellow blogger I disagree with a "moron" or similar put down. Tip. Think before you post, and you will likely come across as someone with INTELLIGENCE as opposed to???
rever65 6 months ago
@rever65 You seem to be the only person opposed to a metric changeover on here. Conservative, complacent, non-risk taking attitudes are one of the biggest impediments to progress. Yes there will be an initial investment- any big, sweeping, yet ultimately beneficial change requires some risk and investment (the very definition of investment)- or would you rather society just stagnated, never moving forward?
Ascaithe 2 weeks ago
Oh, and by the way, speaking of "Metric time". In 1983, my city, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was in the process of converting all signs to "Metric time". Example, "No parking from 8:00 AM-4:00 PM", became," 0800-1600". This was always considered "military time", but in a "Metric country", became "Metric time". This is the type of ludicrous bullshit that prevailed after my country became "Metric". How many people do you know that use "military" or "Metric" time, other than the military???
rever65 6 months ago
As a Canadian, I have heard all of the rhetoric. The "rest of the world is Metric", and "it uses 10s, so it's easier", nonsense. Once you change, people, you CAN'T go back. My teachers tried to convert us, in the 70's, and at the end of the day, we all looked at each other and asked, WHY!? At the age of 10! Get off of the hypocritical bandwagon and enjoy the fact that you are one country that said, SCREW YOU, we like our measurement, we feel comfortable with it, and were not gonna change!!!
rever65 6 months ago
I can't help but notice how many "pro Metric" bloggers talk the talk, but can't "walk the walk". I mean, seriously, you claim to hate Imperial so much, yet you still measure your height in feet and your weight in pounds, not to mention buying your shoes in inches and your pants in inches, among many other things, c'mon, step up to the plate and admit that you should bloody well leave well enough ALONE!!!!
rever65 6 months ago
@imortalsappy You seem to have a deep hatred for the Yanks, mate. Maybe if you resolve your differences, you might be able to think with a clearer head.
rever65 7 months ago
@imortalsappy By the way, many US and Canadian companies handed China the economy on a silver platter by re-locating most of their manufacturing bases there in order to save money. LOTS OF IT. The greedy get greedier. It's far cheaper to have your goods produced by the Chinese than by your "own" workers. It wasn't always this way. Most of our goods used to made in North America. I don't agree with it, but it's the way it is. Judging from your comments, I'm giving YOU a break, NOW GET EDUCATED!
rever65 7 months ago
@imortalsappy What is your basis of "American(s) are too proud of a system..." ??? It has nothing to do with pride! They were RAISED with it! They KNOW it! They still USE it! You obviously need some serious assistance in understanding this. Excuse me, I should have known, your "educated". Forgive me. I base opinions on a straight forward, common sense approach as opposed to "knee jerk" reaction. State some solid reasons why a country of 300 million should convert a system they presently KNOW!
rever65 7 months ago
@imortalsappy Struck a nerve with you, sappy? Truth hurts, don't it. I have provided several "educated" examples to prove my point, few of which have been answered, I might add, by you or anyone else. What have you added, other than a few conversions which anyone can look up and cynicism? Did I say the US invented the Imperial system? Nope. While some of my wording is emotionally charged, I'll defend ones right to their opinion, whether I agree or not. Moron!? C'mon! You respect me! Thank you.
rever65 7 months ago
@mdma4life "It wouldn't cost much to convert". Sign changes alone (speed limit/distance) cost Canadians millions for a measurement they never had a problem with. Though I was young, I can't recall anyone yearning to know how far a location was in kms, or their speed in km. The point is, the US has 10 times the population(dense-not spread out like Canada) and sign conversion costs will be staggering. MANY MORE SIGNS. Why should they change this 1 thing that they all know well???
rever65 7 months ago
@mdma4life Once a country converts, they are obliged, by law to convert all tooling of their manufacturing equipment to Metric. Since our largest trading partner is the US, the cost was very substantial, particularly when no one asked for it. By saying, "others of my generation will control the future", comes off as sounding cold and dictatorial. If Imperial was so bad, why do many still prefer using it? I hope the freedom of choice is still allowed once your gen starts to "control the future".
rever65 7 months ago
@mdma4life Though you were born into it, do you really measure everything in Metric, such as your height? C'mon. The point is that I, along with the majority of Canadians did not want the change. We knew and liked the old system, and many including people your age and younger, still use Imperial to a large degree. Do you walk into a shoe store and ask for a size 30 (12 in)? I'm far from retired and judging from your comments, you don't show much compassion/understanding for the aged.
rever65 7 months ago
Whether discussing measurement or any other topic, if the population is familiar and comfortable with something, and your government decides to change this, with no regard to opposition, the democratic process goes out the window. This is what happened in Canada in the 70s. The people felt no need to change, had no problem with Imperial and DID NOT want the conversion. How hard is this to understand? Would you "pro Metric Americans" accept or chastise those who don't wish to change? FREETOCHOOSE
rever65 7 months ago
@rever65
I'm a 28 year old Canadian (so what you were referring too occurred just before I was born) ,and you don't know how grateful I am that my country is metric and that I learned metric, right from an early age I could not see the sense in imperial, it was not linear, scalable, etc.
The people who bitched in the 70s are now old and retired and have no impact on future, in their place are the scientists and others of my generation who are actually the ones that will control the future.
mdma4life 7 months ago 6
@mdma4life That is true bud. American are too proud of a system that they did not even invent.
imortalsappy 7 months ago 3
I just can't figure why anyone who was raised with Imperial, and use the existing system regularly, bitch about converting. Because most of the world has? It is not as though the US had Metric for the first 200 years, then converted, and now wants back again. You people were born into it! Forget 10s, do you actually hate measuring in miles, feet, inches, pounds etc. so much that you would rather convert, at least to the tune of billions, and re-learn everything you were taught? REAL SMART!
rever65 7 months ago
@rever65
It wouldn't cost much to convert. All the successful and expensive to convert industries in the US deal with international partners, which means they are obligated to be versed in both metric and imperial (since most countries are metric).
The cost would be in education, which Canada showed in the 70's isn't really that bad, and considering how badly US education is being destroyed right now, this degenerative change should be the more pressing educational issue.
mdma4life 7 months ago
@rever65 China have converted quite easily and their culture makes Americas short existence look pathetic. Give me a break and get educated. Anyway with the USA weakening and the rest of the world getting stronger, everyday brings the time closer to where you are going to have to get re-educated. American arrogance is going to bite it in the but. Remember the USA did not invent the imperial system it just got it from its old rulers - ENGLAND. Moron!
imortalsappy 7 months ago
If you know it off by heart, why change? Seriously, do you actually use Metric on a day to day basis? Quick, without consulting a calculator, what is your height in meters, now your weight, now how many kilometers to the liter does your car get. I'll repeat, if you have not read all of my posts, the theory of Metric sounds simple, the application is something else. Why change something you KNOW! Cadadian's were "disgruntled" because their protests were ignored by their "leader" who didn't care.
rever65 7 months ago
The reason why Canadians seem disgruntled with the metric system is because alot of you are trying to convert metric units back to imperial. This is ridiculous!! just use the metric units entirely and you will see how wonderful the system is. 1 litre of water = 1kg = 1000cm3. Water freezes at 0C and boils at 100C. Other than temperature the everyday metric system has only 3 units, litres, metres, and grams. I mean seriously i know the imperial system off by heart and its very outdated.
imortalsappy 7 months ago
One other side effect. Several years after conversion('82-'84) many consumer products began to display, "NEW METRIC SIZE" on their labels, as though this was supposed to be something good. Everything from steak sauce to vodka had these labels. The catch, these products all "shrunk" in size, but the prices didn't. That seemed odd. Who was in bed with who? It's so much deeper than the naive "it works in 10s, so it's better" line. I can't fathom the nightmare that will ensue if you convert.
rever65 7 months ago
Last post(hopefully) By having our system changed, our identity seemed to change as well. I'm not trying to be patriotically dramatic, but anyone who remembers Canada before may agree. It's very hard to explain and I don't expect many to dig what the Hell I mean, but something changed, and not for the better. When you change something as major as measurement, with many people still "half and half", it does something. We also changed our national anthem. What does that say? Lost identity. Sad
rever65 7 months ago
Before any of you respond to my comments, read them over (and over) carefully and ask yourself why someone would devote this much time to comment on something seemingly as trivial as the Metric system. Though I am only 42, I remember the old system quite well, still use it and know many who do. It bothers me, that in a "democracy", supposedly with choice, we were made to choke on this bile, with a "screw you" attitude from our "leader". I'm mostly a fun luvin dude, but this still BURNS MY ASS.
rever65 7 months ago
Shortly after Trudeau came to power in '68, articles began appearing in magazines(every now and then)calling for the "need to go Metric", or "why we must change now". Very similar to what I've heard from the States for years (and on posts like this one). Not many here took it seriously. The Trudeau government utilized these techniques any way they could in an attempt to "brainwash" the public into believing that it was the only choice. The "everybody else is" was used as well. BEWARE PEOPLE.
rever65 7 months ago
Another example. A father of a friend of mine in the '80's was the head city engineer for roadways in Edmonton, Alberta, Can. and said they would not replace their Imperial marked measuring equipment with Metric replacements because of the hideously expensive cost. Why should they? They didn't bitch about the existing equipment. But it's THE LAW. Sign change conversions cost Canadians needless dollars. For what? NO ONE, in my lifetime, ever bitched about speeds/distances in MILES!
rever65 7 months ago
Another blog you "pro Metric Americans" may want to think about from "an anti Metric Canadian". In 1980, shortly after our gasoline pumps were converted to litres(1979), a gas station owner refused to convert his pumps and sell in litres. He had long time customers who preferred gallons(why should he change???) 2 government agents pulled up in a Chevy Citation (I was 11 when this appeared on the news) and proceeded to cap his pumps. What a wonderful, free choice democracy we live in! FUCK THAT!
rever65 7 months ago
@skyblue9696 Why do you feel America has to convert just because the rest of the planet is Metric? Do you not understand your own system? I still remember Imperial very well and wished to Christ we never changed. Do you measure your height in meters and you weight in kilograms? Thought so. NOBODY DOES HERE! Whenever you are asked for your weight here (getting drivers license for example) people give it in pounds and the agency has to convert. It's the law. BIG BROTHER WATCHING!
rever65 7 months ago
For all of the "pro Metric" bloggers, if the leader of Germany(for example)imposed Imperial measure on their citizens, they would be PISSED. For good reason, they have used Metric for multiple decades and are comfortable with it. In Canada, during the '70's, prime minister Trudeau forced this on his citizens and didn't give a FUCK what anyone felt. Canada had utilized Imperial for over 100 YEARS and was comfortable with it. Trudeau was known for giving the finger to detractors. A TRUE ASSHOLE
rever65 7 months ago
@americadashi Think LONG and HARD for what you wish for. Metric cost Canadians untold MILLIONS of dollars for something they never asked for. No one had a problem with the existing system. NO ONE. Except an arrogant, pseudo intellectual by the name of TRUDEAU who rammed this shit through Parliament with absolutely no concern for the overwhelming opposition to this nonsense. It will literally cost you Americans BILLIONS of dollars in conversion. USE YOUR HEADS! PROTEST NOW! Hardly anyone did here
rever65 7 months ago
In theory, Metric sounds simple, in practice, it's a PAIN IN THE ASS. Certain mediums, such as the medical and scientific communities, need very specific, finite modes of measurement, such as Metric. Fine. But when you try to integrate it into the mainstream, it SUCKS! I still find myself trying to figure out how much 3 millimeters of rain is. Constantly converting when reading a news article in the paper or hearing something on the news. It was, and is, totally needless.
rever65 7 months ago
As a Canadian who has had to endure the lovely metric system for years, I say DON'T do it. Our Prime Minister at the time, Trudeau, in his drive to Europeanize Canada, forced it on us. NO ONE had a problem with miles, feet, inches, pounds etc. before the conversion. In fact, everyone I know, young and old, still measure their weight in pounds and their height in feet and inches. Our sporting events such as football are still in yards and cooking is still done in Imperial. DON'T CONVERT!
rever65 7 months ago
Do any of you guys realize that the US looks like a fucking retard because we're the only country that doesn't use Metric? For you people who think we should keep the English System because it's unique to our country, FUCK YOU! Most Americans are brainwashed into thinking our system is better then Metric! I mean really, what's easier to remember: 5,280 feet in a mile or 1,000 meters in a kilometer? Same thing with Fahrenheit! While the US uses Fahrenheit, the rest of the world uses Celsius!

Always amuses me when US officials use assumptions as fact. " SI metric units are now the sole legal units of measurement in Australia" and have been for a very long time. Not getting into the debate, as there really isn't any logical point to do so. Adaption is inevitable, or failure eventually follows.

nicolaz1357 9 months ago
Yes, we changed effortlessly 41 years ago here in Australia because we were lucky enough not to have a paranoid President who thought that the Communists did nothing right. Well, they DID do something right - they employed the SI (metric) system 100% and never touched the English 'system'. The sooner Americans realise this, the sooner you can get on and make real progress by ditching the "customary units" ASAP and start using the metric system. Other countries had a reason - it's so much EASIER!
mjoy0125 10 months ago 11
Its hard for 300 million people to adopt a new system. We in the US are so use to looking at Miles, its weird to see KM. So there is really no point in converting the Metric system. Plus BOTH Systems are as accurate as another. But for those of you in the US, if you are majoring in Science or Engineering, you will have to learn the Metric System!
wtong89 11 months ago
@wtong89 No it's not. It's a lot easier than you think. Australia changed overnight in the 70's, they just changed all the road signs and everything, and they had no problems what so ever. And trust me, there were countries with way more than 300mill people that did the convertion.
And there is no point in converting? Do you know big of a burden it is? Probably not for Americans because you never leave your own freakin country, or interact with others, but it's annoying as hell, trust me!!

Etc... SO EASY!

Many tradesmen use feet and inches too. In Ireland, an automobile bought after 2005 must have km/h only odometers.

Vot63 6 months ago
@Vot63 metric time is stupid because time measurement it works in conjunction with trigonometry and planetary rotation and position, a very complicated area of measurements.
weight and distance is easily standardised using a metric system since imperial measurements are completely arbitrary and needlessly complicated.
AND EVEN IF not using decimal time is hyppocritical, it still doesn't undermine the fact that metric will always be better than imperial
CaptainFluffy6644 6 months ago
@CaptainFluffy6644 How does your conclusion that metric is "ALWAYS" better, square with your admission that metric time is crap? That type of obvious contradiction is the result of fanaticism not reason.
Vot63 6 months ago
I love how the US seems to want to pick a system that's so much more complex and feel the need to prove that they are unique. Get over it; the Imperial system is grossly outdated and there are some things you can't even measure with it.
