I would be interested to hear more about your mobile hive theory, I am assuming that this is in reference to the interactions and heirarchy among the cells within an organism? There is some theoretical work on this by LW Buss that you might find interesting.
I have not observed this. Normally the head would be pressed against an underwater rock or float and so the cells coming out would probably crawl around on this surface. I think they are there to sense and maybe attack bacteria or other microbes.
