This looks like a live performance I loved the Turtles, got to see the remaining a few years ago in sacramento . My friend Chuck Portz played bass back then. Have not talked to him in a few years. I think he ended up following his dream operating big boats and tugs in San Diego.
@blinko656 Wondering where Jim Tucker is. He was in Grass Valley several years ago. Al Nichol was in Carson City, Nevada last I knew but that was awhile ago. Don Murray passed away in March of 1996. He lives on in my heart.
Hard to believe the lead singer (Howard Kaylan) is only 18 years old in this video (so is Mark Volman)! I understand that Jim Tucker left the band in '67 because of some harsh comments John Lennon made towards the group?
As with many Dylan songs, other peoples versions were better than his own. I have often felt that the Turtles did the definitive version of this song. The Byrds also did some great covers of Dylan.
@johnnystaccata Respectfully, please get out of town and never come back. "I'll only lead you down?" He doesn't even get the lyrics right, or change them in a way that makes sense.
Not to mention that the pouty, precious tone of his voice and the song as a whole couldn't be more off-base. This is a song, no matter how you spin it, that is a man telling a woman (or another person) that he's not in love with her. But here, it's sung like the coy, coquettish wooing of one teenager to another.
seeing footage from this era is so annoying, i just want the girls to shut up. that's so demeaning to the musicians, like they're just there for young girls to plaster posters over their walls... plus it was clearly a trend, i really doubt those girls couldn't control themselves. okay, i'm done venting :) i feel better. haha
@peter15903 what do you think of their career? did their sound change after initial success? you don't have to answer :) but I'd love to hear, i'm so interested in music history!
The greatness of Bob Dylan's songwriting is evident in any rendition. It just so happens that so many of his contemporaries were also great performers, particularly this band. What a treat it was to grow up and experience this stuff when it was fresh and new. Can you imagine how startling and profound an impact it had?
The Turtles were very important within the 60's and of the more successful bands they were very under-rated and grossly underpaid, (ripped off by bad management). Post 'Mothers', Flo & Eddie put out some really great material and did and still do some great shows.
@beefoneeto The best rock and roll show of all time was American Bandstand based on quality and longevity. However during it's run, Shindig was the leader.
This song reminds me of my Father so much............. The only recording I have of him playing guitar is of him singing this song... I miss him.. Its so interesting how Music can have such an impact on someone..
It's a song about a break-up, but that's just part of life and helps us all to more appreciate the working relationships. Great Song. Thanks for writing it, Mr. Dylan. Thanks for singing it,Turtles. Thanks for Posting John1948ThirteenA. Peace & Love to ALL.
Their first top ten hit, Turtles had always an incredibly smart ear for every hit they've released. Mine faves are also "Let Me Be", "Grim Reaper Of Love", "You Know What I Mean", "Eve Of Destruction" and lots more, apart from their timeless hits "Happy Together", "Eleanor" and the incredibly beautiful "You Showed Me"...
The singer looks like John Belushi. Too funny!

@lennonzappa71 Yeah he did cause I heard from Howard that John Lennon called Jim Tucker a tasteless Beatle imitator.

johnnystaccata 3 months ago
@johnnystaccata I would agree when talking about his "musical" songs but songs like Bob Dylan's 115th Dream could only be done right by Dylan.
John1948ThirteenA 3 months ago
@John1948ThirteenA I also think Tambourine Man is best with Dylan, no disrespect to the Byrds' version, but Dylan does it best.
XWiseXGuy 2 months ago
@johnnystaccata Your right. Dylan's version of his own "Like A Rolling Stone" was very good, but Hendrix's version was an .... an "Experience!"

Johnny Cash recorded this song too. The flip of Johnny's song was "Time and Time Again" which I liked better than his version of this song.
Great Turtles video, makes me sad that those days are gone and those teeny boppers are old like I am. Time flies when your having fun they say.

Although this great song was composed
by Bob Dylan, The Turtles did this fabulous rendition.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think Bob Dylan performed his
version after The Turtles scored this one first.
Among other things, lead singer Howard Kaylan
is also in the Facebook site, and I've had the honor to
add Howard in my contact page recently
and visit with the veteran Turtle in the messenger last night. :)
