I feel bad for knowing just this song from him. It is since its release that it keeps ticking in my brain from time to time... and the lyrics... well... I would have loved to write them myself. Great one indeed.
I didn't realize how much I loved this song until I bought his greatest hits collection and was playing THIS song over and over again. For one thing, the lyrics are such outstanding poetry, and the music is tops. I love the drum grove. Thanks for posting this vid. This specific performance is great.
@mydlands look for the name George Green, (I think) on many of JM's songs. You will find, as you do here, a beautiful collaboration. Poetry (Green), music (JM), and profound revelation (for us all).
As others here have said human wheels, pretty much the whole thing is a masterpiece. It portrays the American experience as well as a Stienbeck novel. When he brought it to the record company suits they didn't want to put it out because there was no rap music in it. That was one of the reasons he ended up using Chevrolet to get his music out. No wonder the industry is in the tank.
his voice has got rougher cause he smokes like 5 packs of cigs everyday, and i honestly dont like it cause he doesnt sound nearly as good as he did and doesn't sing his songs the same way. His son started a facebook page trying to get his dad to stop if 1 million people join the group
@EWLGtoday Almost all performers are publicly liberal. Even those who are not are terrified of the illogical backlash that would hit them if they chose otherwise. Most of these performers are millionaires who attempt to avoid paying taxes like the plague. But they will never tell you that as they scarf down their $300 a plate sushi in Hollywood. They want to portray that they are just one of the masses.
Mellencamp is actually an exception to the rule above. I work in the business btw.
@Boss302fan Great way to put it,yes he is an exemption.I spent a few yrs. "married" to the business.John Mellencamp is where it all started. He is a walking contraindication but admits it.Love his music!!!I'm writing book,so many truths will come out in it.....so dif. behind the scenes then the fans really know.Almost laughable!!
Awesome song! Went to see John's concert in Uncansville, Connecticut. His concerts get better and better each time I see him. I find it amazing-is he chewing gum and singing at the same time-and he sounds so good! Congratulations on the Grammy nomination and your ASCAP Award. You R.O.C.K.
also the chords are the same of bon jovi...listen to "these days"

John Mellencamp is my FAVORITE music artist of all time. He does not get the props that he deserves. Underrated in many respects.

John's voice has gotten deeper and rougher as he ages - it suits this song very well. His band is one of the, if not the very best.
