  • good video, Thanks-!

  • good vid I hate that getting shocked ! lol its happened to me enuff over the years

  • THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH...I TRIED YOUR METHOD & IT WORKS!! I NOW HAVE ANOTHER USE FOR DISH SOAP & WATER/ I SPRAY INSECTS WITH IT & THEY DIE INSTANTLY.. SOMETHING ABOUT WKTOSKELETAL SOME THING?? AT ANY RATE THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!

  • What happened to a DVOM and checking for resistance? What happened to spark testers?

  • wow who ever did this is a complete jackass

  • Ignition components get sprayed with water and dirt constantly when you drive your car. They are protected against this and if you can trigger arcing like this by spraying water on your coils then those coils are faulty and should be replaced.

  • TOUCH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There only $50.00 why not this put new ones every 50,000 miles... I do.

  • @stellaspeed10 usually they are less then $50. I would defiantly recommend replacing the spark plugs and spark plug wires about once a year. It isn't that expensive and does help. I like to replace them more then most people just because I love my engine and I can't have it die on me when I am in the middle of a desert. 50,000 miles is probably good for most cars though. To everyone else. Please listen to this guy and replace them!!!!!

  • @117nathanmyers Thanks like I didn't already know that.

  • test it like a man and pull the wire you pussy

  • Thanks for sharing something so simple yet effective.

  • @IROCwarriorAMC88 you fit the perfect category of a FOOL!

  • I did this but all I had was gasoline. Bad idea!

  • Eat shit all you assholes! This is a great way to tell if insulation is bad. Usually when they are this bad you can see them spark at night by just raising the hood. Of course the correct way to tell if they are firing strong is unplugging it from the spark plug and hold it while someone starts to engine. Works fast!

  • well he didn't look that up in AllData

  • Homey...you can add audio to this video for free. Google "Dubit"

  • I like this method more than cont and res test because some of these test involve damaging the the insulation otherwise good wires. if you have the tools use them but its not going to kill your engine to get some water on it. if it does... well don't drive in the rain.

  • Its the first thing I do for any misfire code! And when theres no obvious arching, you can feel the tingle of voltage running your fingers over the wires if their worn out. Its the simplest and fastest diagnostic procedure you can do. When you have a customer with a complaint that the car misfirse when its raining out, you'd be ignorant NOT to spray the wires!

  • Or you could pull them off the plug during idle and see which one doesn't spark right....I mean I know it's fun to spray a flammable liquid on a 40,000 volt spark but....

  • my muffler bearings just went out the other day

  • awesome video!

  • YOU CAN ALSO RUN A SCREW DRIVER WITH A RUBBER HANDLE LIKE 1MM-2MM AWAY AND IT WILL CAUSE CONTACT ITF ITS BAD NO YOU WONT SHOUCK YOURSELF BECAUSE SCREW DRIVER HAS A RUBBER HANDLE DUMB ASS LOL

  • my gas cap light come on what that mean?

  • Touch it u bastard.

  • @ETXBULLDOG you foul mouthed devil get ready, judgement day is soon coming!!!

  • @ETXBULLDOG Please go away!! Now!!!

  • all you guys talking shit about multimeters and who already knew how to test, why are you watching videos about it if you already know? buncha dumb dicks you all are

  • I wouldnt use water......the way i test, pull it, see if theres spark....99% of the time i shock the shit out of myself lmao

  • @bullet0597 Your way sounds much smarter.

  • Have you ever heard of a Multimeter?

  • Try this also. Start the vehicle in absolute darkness. Look closely around the engine and look for current to ground. I have found a few that had noticable spark leaks this way. Plug wire time.

  • just grab the end of it lol. the results are quite shocking

  • @CrazyMalone that will definetly let you know if its working.

  • It's a harmless test, but doesn't prove right from wrong all that accurate, as said it only determines if the insulation of the wires is okay, not the conductivity. The latter being a far more likely reason for failure as mentioned.

To all doom prophets commenting, you've seen too many movies. Water and electricity, even with high voltage. Water is a very poor conductor. Water and soap a little better, but in this case still harmless. You'd all have to be much more scared driving a car!

  • @Veebroo

All too right, they could use a multimeter and check the resistance, etc.. etc... but this is a cheap and quick everyman's sort of way to check for the problem of moisture shorting out one of your plugs. Never heard of someone being shocked, hurt, or engine being destroyed because of water... which is naturally found in the atmosphere, and on a rainy days.

  • do it yourself colonoscopy: need I explain?

  • There's hope for some; hope is not for all.

  • This is GREAT, hey you should try checking tire pressure with a very sharp knife. Works great. DUMB FUCK!!!!

  • Dude i check to see if my gas bottle is leaking with a lighter.. ITS COOL!!

  • possibilities entering a jerking stage is higher if often doing this!

  • there's another way to check this, put your hand on the cables, you'll feel the spark! ;P

  • This person right here, is EXACTLY why I do all the work on my own car myself and can't trust mechanics. THANKS ALOT ASSHOLE.

  • @fretwizard420 You're probably really qualified!! If decide to not trust doctors, should I do my own heart transplant? What a dipshit!

  • @wldman247 You don't spray WATER on your ignition system to diagnose electrical problems. PERIOD. You might want to reconsider who you're calling the dipshit here, as you obviously know nothing about troubleshooting automotive systems. If you did, you would know this is NOT correct. You wouldn't trust some half-assed doctor to do that heart transplant you mentioned, would you? Shit no. And believe me, I'm plenty qualified to check for something as trivial as a bad wire. And do it the right way!

  • @fretwizard420 Is it that OBVIOUS? I'm far more qualified than you can ever begin to imagine. I'm not going to try to convince anyone via the internet of that though, since it can't be done. Let's just say that what I do for a living is to go in after the dimwits representing themselves as automotive techs have thrown parts at it, at the expense of the customer/victim, and actually do a pinpoint diagnosis. Your statement of blanketing ALL mechanics as untrustworthy is the thing I didn't like.

  • @fretwizard420 Using a water spray is a prescribed method by many manufacturers. The only use it has is to check for insulation breakdown though, it does not analyze the internal core's resistance level so I agree that's it's wrong to title the video the way he did. It's just showing a tiny bit of what can go wrong, and it's the least likely failure. Some people may have bad wires and replace something else if they use this method and think it will prove the wires are fine.

  • @wldman247 I've never heard of an auto manufacturer that recommends this method. I've worked for dealerships, & several auto parts stores and have also never heard a reputable mechanic ever mention something of this nature. I cannot 100% say that it has never been recommended by a dealer or mechanic, but I certainly have never heard of it. I would certainly use a timing light and a multi-meter over some Dawn in a spray bottle to check for bad wires. You always use the proper tools for the job...

  • @fretwizard420 Do the repair shops usually have tools to check if the plug wire insulation can hold for example 60kv or even more?. I have seen cases where the wires (insulation) have failled on high power dyno run. How you would diagnose that?

  • @wldman247 maybe so but this can also short out these coilpacks. if this IS an accepted way to check this, is thre no other option?

  • @fretwizard420 this amount of water would cover that part of the wires and coil anyway on a rainy day while motorway driving and so on . its a fair test . and it just shows up the fault as it would do if its wet . Cars are made in a way where they don’t just spontaneously combust if someone sprays it directly or if its raining out , its the same thing.

W_E ,leave him be he’s having a good squirt!! XD

  • @fretwizard420 haha

  • I've never been shocked removing plug wires?! How is it so many have?

  • @dumdum212 do it while the car is running.

  • dumb ass its called a srewdriver and a ground on the car

  • i got shocked so thats how i know hahaha

  • or you could just buy a set off wooden plyers that are designed to remove spark plug wires so you dont get shocked

  • I burned through A set of AC Delco and a set Accel 8m wires in 6 months. I got a set of Ford Racing 9mm, did a spark voltage check and was firing an average of 85,000volts.... no wonder I went thru Spark Plug wires so fast. The Ford Wires have held up since 2006. I must a have a Nuclear Power plant powering the coils. lol

  • Good job risking an explosion

  • Just get a screwdriver and move it alongside the wires, with one end touching metal. You'll see a spark if you have bad cables.

  • @eltrouble can u make video on that ?

  • you'll know if your spark plus aint working when you cant sttart the engin the best way lol

  • There a much safer and SMARTER way to just for bad wires. OHM THEM

  • @stangredemption You could do that, but it won't test for bad insulation on the cables, which is a primary reason for wire failure. Rarely do the wires themselves corrode or wear out to the point of no contact.

  • This video has no sound for me.

  • Worse idea ever !!!, water and electricity don't mix.

Lights out.... hood barely open and you'll see sparks if your spark plug wires are leaking.

  • THE BEST WAY TO CHECK FOR BAD WIRES,IS TO WAIT TILL ITS DARK OUTSIDE,AND RAISE YOUR HOOD AND CRANK IT UP,THEN LOOK AT ALL THE WIRES,MY NOVA WAS ACTING UP AND I DONE THIS AND WHEN I CRANKED IT UP IT LOOKED LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE,UNDER THE HOOD,BAD SP WIRES ARCING,AND NO DAMN SHOCK!!!!!!!

  • Some sound would be good.

  • good video by the way. thumbs up. use a timing light if your bored. or why not spend 2 hours checking the ohms and miss out the the slight tear on a wire that went thru the rubber and not cut the insides.my mustang had a wire rubbing on brake booster caused a miss fire. SPRAY SOME WATER

  • best way to test wires (not the fastest but smartest and most accurate) is to drain your ur car's oil, open up the gas tank (leave gas cap off), make sure u put oil drain plug back on! but do not add oil at this time! Then have someone jump in the driver's seat and start the engine while u look under the hood for a spark plug grounding, or any sparks flying around, if no sparks that means u fixed ur car and most likely theres no more misfire, add oil and if misfire persists u did something wrong!

  • @MrLIFEISTOOSHORT your joking right? why not slightly loosen a fuel injector line next to the coil or wire you think its shortening. turn the key a few times before cranking and see if the gas ignites =D. lol

  • @crrazyy lol thats a good one, but out ur e- brake on! and start your engine and leave in drive, go out (while car in drive but e-brake on) and open your hood, then without opening your car's door and reach in and release the e-brake and quickly go back to see which plug is grounding (if any)

  • @MrLIFEISTOOSHORT crap, i tried it in reverse and not drive..lol mailman is feelin it

  • @MrLIFEISTOOSHORT that would make the engine junk, lol. bad advice

  • touch it it tickles more than a tickle me Elmo

  • jus check ohms resistance from one end of the cable to the other with a multimeter, they should all read reletively the same number. if one is super low then youve found your prob. if they all low jus buy new cables, your saving money by doin the job yourself anyways, shit use that extra cash on your new set of cables. cheap ass mother fuckers.

  • Hey, what happened to the sound???

  • What happened to the website?

  • nice to know an honest mechanic

  • I would not be surprised if u fried the whole comp of the car...

  • how about you do it the proper way and check the resistance?

  • @automotiveDIY What's the point? Are you assuming people have a DVOM and know how to use one, let alone know what the numbers mean? Soapy water in a squirt bottle is cheaper, faster, and very simple to understand compared to ohming wires.

  • @haggard159 well you can get a cheap one for $10, and a squirt bottle only works if there is a split in the insulation. you could have a burnt wire under the insulation, which the squirt bottle will never work in that case.

  • @automotiveDIY

Hey dumbass, read the comments by the OP, he said " Shade tree mechanic " What is so hard to comprehend about that statement?

  • @nixaman Totally. I mean, OSHA would never allow soap inside a spray bottle. Shade tree mechanics only!

  • Replace them every 10 years . Use factory parts . Lay the new over the old and

trade them out one at a time .

  • You either put a blanket over your headlights if you have auto-daylight and look for a blue-arch.

Best way without worry of shortting out anything.

  • STUPID

  • Lol, really??? Idiots out there...

  • How To (Fuck up your ride) Checking For Bad Spark Plug Wires 0:00 - 0:32

  • ok let me add to this....i have checked for bad wires on a car a few times and what de did was to start the car @ night in a spot on the street and open the hood............IMO you can see the current going thru the lines to the plugs and the more you see of the pathways to the plugs the more the wires have broken down...

    my2cents

  • Wtf lol. Why not simply use a dvom and check the wires resistance.

  • pls dunt do this. if ur car gets a big spark remember fuel lines right beside it.....

  • @IzzyLL Not enough volts to jump that far.

  • @IzzyLL the fuel line has no oxygen in it, therefor it will not ignite. The charge will simply go though the line itself and find it's way to the chassis. There will be no spark inside the fuel line, which gives me even more doubt it will ignite. This is assuming you don't have a fuel leak, in which case you have other problems to worry about than bad plug wires.

  • your wires would have to be really bad to do this.

  • what the fuck is the shit on you channel

  • i use a timeing light fuck this if u didnt have a short u will get one lol

  • @wootwoot409 Timing light on a DIS hmmm.......

  • in soveit russia..you dont check for bad spark plugs..spark plugs check to see if you mentally ok.

  • This is ONE test to check for ONE kind of failure. Of course there are many more. THIS test shows insulation of a wire hase broken down and the energy is jumping to ground, thus weak to the plug. Engine components including wires are WATER-RESISTANT. (does anyone expect that you don't ever clean your engine?) The test is valid for it's intended purpose. When ONE wire is found to be bad, the others are probably not far behind. Time to change them all.

    Good job TMM!

  • @charlief1313 lol well then this is even more retarded what u need is a ohm meter u will never be able to tell the resistances in a wire by spraying water on it just like a bad battery will still spark even when its only running 9 volts but it wont tell u that its not at 12 volts spraying water in general on electrical shit is a bad idea a bad spark wire can still spark even if its bad that why u test it on a 20k resist ohm meter and if its good should read 5 to 7k

  • Good video. It must not rain where a lot of the morons live. I've been doing this simple test for YEARS!!

Anyone claiming that this will damage your "crucial ignition parts" must only drive their car on sunny 90 degree dry days. cunts.

  • I got shocked today.... But yeah i found out which ones were bad, put really old plug wires on i found in my trunk works good for now.

  • Cool....Touch the flashing light once.

  • great video don't know why your getting so much shit i guess it don't rain were some of these know it alls live

  • I can't believe so many people are calling this guy a moron. These people either know nothing about cars or are either over educated mechanics who think every one is a hack because they don't do things the way they were taught.

  • @caesar7277

Yeah lets spray fluid on crucial ignition parts. Thats the right /proper/ best way to check them, not with an ohmmeter or anything.

  • @diseasedrealm What do you think is going to happen? An explosion! It's WATER. The point is it takes two seconds to spray water. If you don't see a spark, then you take the time to do further diagnoses if needed. You made my point, you either don't shit about cars or are over educated. The point is I'm right, this way of checking is faster and causes no harm to the car.

  • @caesar7277 no he is right this is a retarded way to check sparks when it comes to cars it best to do it the right way spend the extra 20 seconds it takes to pull a plug out and ground it to your motor turn the car over and see if it sparks vs spraying positive connections with water plus alot of cars dont have a distributor or is it ez to find and see both my supra and eclipse gsx have power blocks i guess we all build cars diff but this is something i would never do to my girls that i love

  • @TrollLuv He's talking about checking spark plug wires. not spark plugs.

  • @TrollLuv You are talking about an open circuit, not a leak to earth as on this video.

  • @diseasedrealm you doofus

this checks insulation breakdown (common problem)

ohmmeter checks conductivity breakdown (common problem)

dont act like you you are an expert if you are not

    this is a valid test

yesturdtee u coodknot spill mekenac end tudey u r one?

    GIVE ME A BREAK

  • I feel sorry for the car.

  • or you could just spend the $30 and get new wires.......

  • @AndoCommando3

I wish I was only spending 30 bucks on wires, try at least a 100.00 unless I make my own.

in reference to the video, I not a bad trick.

  • my ranger started to missfire when i got off the highway and i stoped at a red light

i gave it gas and it slightley jerked not hard or anything i thought it was the tranny but when i got home i heard it ticking at idle and the muffer was going poof poof so i looked at night under the hood and the wire i sparking atthe spark plug im glad its just a wire and not a tranny

  • men this is nuts and will generally shorten your ECU unit, a warning to the viewer of this video, it better you use ohmeter, or if your in doubt better call in a expert mechanics

  • WTF LOL

  • I'm just wondering why he just doesnt hold the end og the spak plug with one hand and the lead with the tip of his finger with the other and get a mate to turn the ignition..Probably doesnt have mates that dumb?

  • @Gorto72 He would have to ground himself to a good ground with his other hand, and wait until he passes out

  • @Gorto72 U r stupid!

  • or you can just spray it with water

  • Hey, AHs, he just tried to help, Don't be such a rude

  • with the proper amont of ducked tape and right size hammer you can fix anything

and rembed men if wemon dont find you handsum thay shod atlest find you handy.

  • @dondondonman Don't forget reapiring things with bubble gum, scothch tape and paperclips!

  • What an idiot!

  • I thought all you had to do was start the car at night and look for shorts?

  • so the one who's sparking that is the bad spark plug?

  • @Emopunk666 no it means you find the bad wire

  • why don't y'all just stop being a cheap and buy new wires, and I don't know about touching wires or doing everything macgyver style LOL

  • @retiredassasin You maybe riqgth but... then where is the genius of a good mechanic, the macgyver style is what makes your brain work.

  • I always drive the car in a dark place ( garage with lights off) and you can see sparks flying all over

  • This guy is a MORON. Mostly these days the best way to tell is from engine roughness and if your car is a 96 or higher then your check engine will flash meaning your having a miss fire, but pretty much you will already know.

  • This is kind of dangerous but it works. Another method to test the plugs is to get a long screw driver that is insulated at one end hold the screw driver end to the plug ends or anywhere between then get a insulated jumper wire attach one end of the jumper wire to ground and the other end to the screw driver if your wire is bad you will see arcing wear thick gloves for your protection.

  • i got to said it damn ass

  • what an idiot

  • anybody know an easy way to get out a broken spark pulg thats only got the ceramick left in it without takin apart engine?

  • @BigMac014

I found a video showing how this is done on youtube. Keep looking, it's there, I don't remember the name.

  • im so taking my car to this guy

  • And if you dont have the proper tools to test a car PROPERLY, then you dont belond near a car :-D

  • Roadghost88..youre the one that doesnt have a clue..

the reason i made an autozone reference is because the tools from there are inexpensive and easy to find, opposed to sears, snapon, etc.

The proper way to test a ignition coil is with a digital multimeter..

having sparks flying around with water isnt a good thing, especially if you have

vapor leaks from the battery and/or fuel system..

maybe your method is the correct in the state where they tip over cows, but over here we do it correctly =)

  • props for the good thinking.... ill try this next time i get a misire ^^ mad props

  • Chauvinisticzero, is under the hood water prof??? i mean come on man that area is going to get wet when driven in the rain anyway, he used a misting squirt bottle not a water hose , stop getting mad that someone else figured out how to do something with out fancy equipment

beside if the car fry's because of some MIST just scrap it it's junk

  • this guy is stupid...

  • NO SOUND...ONLY 32 seconds long.....105,000 ................yet this video still makes so much since!

  • Good video. The people hating on do not kno way of dragon.

  • if the resistance was good..there wouldnt be a problem... YOU sir are an idiot.

leave the car stuff to the car guys.. And please..who ever is watching this video..dont attempt to do this pathetic "test"...if you have a fuel leak on the fuel rail, injectors, FPR, and shrader valve..while doing this test..say goodbye to you car, because it'll go KABOOM..not to mention the fumes from a open vent/top battery.. Go to autozone and pick up a kv-tester or a dvom

  • @mrcokez1 Get a clue. Anyone who works on cars knows you check for flammable leaks before doing this kind of testing. And doing a controlled test is better than having a car arcing in a rainstorm. If you're really worried though, take the wires off one at a time, attach them to your ohmeter, then dip the centre of the wires in a sink of salt water. Lastly, educate yourself and stop being and Autozone mechanic.

  • @ lowlowfoshow, that's why you check resistance on the wires too.. Chauvinisticzero is correcting..shorting out a coil would fry you connections TO the coil.. best way to check a coil is to get a kv-tester, or a DVOM..this water test is the dumbest shit ive seen..which is why people that dont know what they're doing..should leave the car alone..

  • well smart guy then if he is just shorting out the wires, then how checking the resistance. Resistance may be good, but it can still have a bad spot in the rubber surround. This does work and it works well I threw a grand at my cadillac before I tried this-also tested those wires in every possible way, and the hillbilly way works trust me-I have the car building experience to back my mouth as well so........

  • @lowlowfoshow2005 i have to add... if u had a misfire one of the first things i woulda replaced where the plugs and wires... why throw 1k at it and not do the basics .. if u woulda had any experience then that would of been one of the first things done... have to say that was a idiot comment u posted

  • @thyreapu Sometimes, checking the actual sparkplug gap is more important.

.050 in. instead of .035 in. gap can cause poor performance/emissions, as well.

Those new Granatelli 0-ohm plug wires seem to be the horses' meow.

But who can afford them. The price may eventually come down.

Until then, we, or I must settle for @ 500 ohms/ft.

  • The best way to see if you have a short in your plug wires is to start the motor, and grab each wire. If you feel electricity go into your hand and up your arm...the wire is bad.

  • @FixFalcon - I agree. True, you'll know which one it is. However, you have to find someone stupid enough to grab a plug wire on a newer car when it's running, because it'll kick you BUTT in a skinny minute! Cars from early to mid 80's all have a much stronger coils/coil packs on them than the older cars did, because of the Elect. Ign. Sys. Reach out and touch a plug wire with 80 thousand volts flowing through it. Heh heh heh. Might be your last?

  • @namrednop what car do you own that has 80k volts from the ignition system? I just bought a high performance coil for my blazer and its only 45k... you sound silly when you throw erroneous numbers out there.

  • is this the best way to test your wires? or can anyone plz tell me what the best way to do it.

  • You use an Ohm meter to measure the resistance of the wire. Shorter wires normally have less resistance. There probably is a true standard of measure per length. The lower the resistance the better. A sharp edge on older style sparks is the intense spot. Manual also says the range Ohms of your coil. I've had wires that outlasted the car 400,000 miles but one got broken probably from some jerky mechanic. That's the real world

  • is it 5k ohms is good or something like that? i have a 93 camry 2.2L, the plug wires are hard to disconnect. any tips? thanks.

  • See manual at auto parts store. It's probably up to 30K ohms or 20. Don't yank the wire only the base area, ask the auto parts store guy

  • @imupabove honestly this is not the best way to check ur spark plugs wires cuz one, u can do further damage to the wire possible the plug. and if ur not careful possible have a short somewhere. Really just take a Ohm meter and check it the right way cuz this can possible do stupid shit to ur car. Engine running a live spark happening, what if ur car was leaking some dangerous gasses huh. Like from ur battery. AND YES the gasses the leak from ur battery is explosive.

  • there is a tool i think you can clamp over each wire and test for leakage voltage etc?

  • best way to do it if they havent been changed in a long time is to buy new ones

  • really. i got 134-xxx miles on my car.

  • do u do dis while the cars is on or off??

  • @esewey89 the engine was running

  • @coldasiice thats what she said.

  • your stupid.

  • thats what she said.
