when I was a kid I used to listen to all of my uncles albums, he had this album and I remember being enthralled with it, and staring at these girls on the cover and getting turned on. LOL :)
This beats the Beatles version hands down, Its raunchy, raw and brilliant, should be played loud. I still have all there vinyl so I may be a bit bias.
Note the poster said that this was the first woman's band to record an album for a major label. There were quite a few bands that preceded Fanny that did not get on the majors, such as the Continental Co-ets, the Pleasure Seekers and the Clingers. For those who wish to see the sisters that went before, look for the "Girls in the Garage" compilations on Romulan.
Yes, in British slang, that's what 'fanny' means. Not in the US of A, where the group was born. No truth to the story, either, that George Harrison suggested the name to them.
They replaced Deep Purple one night in Dayton. The crowd was blown away. I bought their record the very next day. They also had a hit called Celebrity Ball.
I saw these incredible women in the spring of 1972 when they gave a free, open-air concert at Northern Arizona University. My girl-friend at the time looked just like Jean Millington. Great concert and a perfect day. I remember all of it.
Never heard of them either until a few minutes ago. I'm amazed how good they are yet no coverage in the UK? Even though I was young then, still would of remembered them. Oh well, enjoying listening to them now. Crap name though, how derogatory is that, fanny, just 'cus they all got one!
I’m flabbergasted… never heard of these ladies before until, a few minutes ago, I stumbled upon their version of ‘Badge’ and through that one upon this one. Very skilled musicians, they kick ass! Very good cover version of one of my Beatles favourites.
Benny and Björn must have listened very closely to their sound. I may be wrong but nobody seems to notice but the way of singing and production resembles Abba very much, or rather the other way round.
Hello - thanks for your fantastic comment. You're not alone in noticing the ABBA musical connection - someone else posted a similar observation on a different video clip. Hmm...maybe that's the reason why I adore ABBA's music, too!
@shelter69 !Lo de Abba es genial! cierras los ojos y ves a Agnetta y Frida.Tampoco las habia escuchado, solo sabia que el nonbre se lo puso George Harrison "Fanny=culo"en slag.xD
I don't know if this one "kicks" the beatles version or not...but it is straight ahead ripping....the guitar work still impresses 40 years later.... friends laughed when I bought this album in '73....a "girl band"....then they bought it too...they all rip, drums through keys and the harmony arrangements are knock-out
mariandochs -- what Beatles do YOU listen to. This one kicks the Beatles version all over the place. More authentic, ominous, and urgent, man, urgent. This is driving!. I heard then in,I think 1970 on the East Coast. Went to see the main group that I can't even remember now and Fanny was all I talk about for days. Couldn't wait for their album to be released. so glad to hear they are still playing. Thanks GIRLS! You ROCK! By the way. THIS bass line version made me take up Bass!
I admire the passion dude, but I dont think this bass-line is better than the original. I took up the bass because of Sir Paul McCartneys "I am the walrus" so I might be biased though ;)
@mariandelochs Don't misunderstand me, Fanny is a great band and a great recent discovery for me, I don't know how to make it clearer because, this is subjective and a moot point, I find it less thumping than the Beatles original version. I don't mean to slight at all but this version, for me, sounds 'clean and precise and formal' somehow. Now, for example, take Vanilla Fudge's version of The Supreme's 'You keep me hanging on', that is wild and other worldly it seems.
I completely agree with Bowie's thoughts..One of the best EVER...I saw these ladies in Denver-1971-opening for The James Gang and they completely blew Joe and the Gang away...We've missed out on a lot of great music because of the way "the establishment" treated these (then) young ladies...They DESERVE to be in the RRHOF if for no other reason than having the kahunas to do what they did and doing it so well
I AM NOW A FANNY FAN....THESE GIRLS HAVE TRUE TALENT AND DO THE BEATLES JUST IN THEIR COVER !!!

Thanks for sharing the nice anecdote! I think it was called 'Charity Ball' - one of their biggest hits, if not their biggest.
