We all know that the real firework footprints did happen at the opening ceremony. The BBC like all the news media around the world have quoted the Chinese Olympic committee, who said, if you had listened/read :-

This was provided to broadcasters for "convenience and theatrical effects", according to Wang Wei, Bocog's executive vice-president.

This was also due to the fact it was difficult to capture this effect as it lead up to the stadium!

i don't know why this would be so controversial.

The original plan was to make the first 28 footprints with CG and the last one with real firework. The Chinese has officially announced that. There's nothing to do with cheating even if the first 28's firework was not launched.

The idea "foot print" is so creative. I don't why some idiots are still focusing on "the footprints are FAKE". The only reason is they are jealous.

they did launch the fireworks during the ceremony, but helicopters couldn't approach them from the top (for safety issues), so what ppl saw on TV was pre-rendered, (so you don't see a blank sky, confused).

According to the producers of the ceremony, the ones actually shot into the skies weren't shown on TV. What we saw on the broadcast were cgi, because helicopters were not allowed in Beijing August 8th night.
