I had just left EWR that morning to drop off a friend at the airport. Geez, I had a flight this day out of LGA, the weather was bad, tons of cancellations and delays. I got cancelled my reservation and rebooked for the next day.
1 day ago when you are reading thid do not stop or else something bad will happen! (sorry about this) this girl's name is summer, she is 15 years old and has blonde
hair, many scars, and she has no ears. she is dead. if you dont copy this to more
than 5 videos, she will appair one dark quiet night when you are not expecting it
beside your bed with a knife and going to kill you. this is no joke. if you send this on 5 more videos something good will happen to you
The title of this post is misleading since the co-pilot, who is still a pilot after all, continued to fly and land the plane. Nothing really amazing about that; however, it is sad and unfortunate that the pilot died during a flight.
@Axmedkoole Show's that they obviously do need two pilots in case a tragedy like this happens. If there was only one pilot and this happened I dread to think what would happen.
@bgarlando, what are the chances of something like this happening?. And how many times did it happen in the past?. Most likely, there is a pilot in every airplane as a passenger or at least familiar with flight instruments.
@Axmedkoole I understand where you are coming from but if you listen to the press release carefully, because there was another co pilot on the flight it ended up landing with two fully trained pilots at the controls. Upon landing there is a lot to do and it always helps to have someone else there retarding the throttle etc whilst the other pilot flares the plane.
@bgarlando, You make a point as well. However, a pilot once told me, it is just to make customers (fliers) feel comfortable to have two pilots, but in today's technology it can be unnecessary. You know airplanes can even land itself without the pilot's control using ILS.
@Axmedkoole Yes I do know that, and maybe that's the main reason they have two pilots then. But I still think, correct me if i'm wrong, when you land with ILS someone still have to physically pull the throttles back as the autothrottle doesn't actually move the throttle levers.
@bgarlando, I am not a pilot myself, but according to what I read and learned from FSX planes got autobrakes in which you set before you even land and will automatically come to an stop. If a radar can guide a plane to its runway I am sure you can develop the technology to guide the airplane to its tarmac.
@Axmedkoole Potentially, also I don't think ILS actually flares the landing for you so again that task would still have to be completed. And this video: was taken 4 odd years ago, and I know technology has moved on, but in my opinion it's too risky to take pilots out of the equation.
@bgarlando@Axmedkoole You do need two pilots in case one gets incapacitated (dies, too much stress and is unable to perform simple tasks, just go crazy, get suicidal...), and it does happen relatively often, as there are lots of planes flying everyday. And planes can be really different from one to an other so just jumping in the seat and try to engage the autopilot for an ILS and autoland can be tricky, especially if you are not a pilot. And there are lots of planes which can't autoland.
@mestoymedia Well in theory, Autopilot flies the plane following a flightpath that's programmed by the pilots prior to take off. Autoland, is used to land the plane in extreme weather conditions. Now, on approach, the pilots are in contact with the airport's air trafic control, who gives the pilots information such as, approach height, speed, runway #, landing conditions, etc. The aircraft itself can't take in that information on it's own, therefore the 'human' medium is required.
@Alwayzsmilin well, autoland is used to land the plane in extreme weather conditions when fog, low visibility. However, should the wind component is high (it depends on the airplane) pilot takes the aircraft under control and lands manually.... in this case no big deal as one pilot is able to land an airplane safely...
@Kamikuru77 Huh? Oh right! God did not have a Co-Pilot onboard this flight right? lol Co-Pilot is 2nd in command. Has same skills as Primary pilot. They share the work load. Get it??
In medicine, death by natural causes is a loosely defined term used by coroners to describe death when the cause was disease instead of violence or drug use. It is also used when the cause is unknown. "Old age" is not a scientifically recognized cause of death. Death by unnatural causes are usually given as accident ("misadventure"), suicide, and homicide. I looked it up on Wikipedia

Interesting that just a couple years ago he wouldn't have been flying at 61 years old. The FAA just recently increased the age for a class 1 medical certificate.

Sure, why bother having a pilot at all then? Let's just allow pilots to die of old age every single flight and necessitate emergency landings all the time. You imbecilic fornicator.
Happy to know the plane was landed safe. Good thing they never told the passengers or the same thing like on the movie "Soul Plane" might had happened.
no, i can hear - i just can't read new stories that mean nothing to the general public, yet are sensationalized simply because the guy that died was a pilot. if it was a highway construction worker - no one would give a F. 'cept YOU - pissant.
fact of the matter is, it could have been worse, and that crap that people post on all these videos "did he died?" is retarded. If your not gonna post something constructive regarding the video, then just dont post.

autoland is exactly that.....autoland. It will do everything including the flare and throttle to idle.
It's not a big deal

Prove that airplanes don't need two pilots. Save money now, let one captain fly, since 80% of the plane instruments are automated.

@Axmedkoole you missed one small piece of information. The automation can't decide the best route around thunderstorms.
and
the automation cant taxi the plane to the runway.
maybe you shouldnt post about this stuff, it just makes you look ignorant.

RIP dear fellow .........
BUT
therefore ALWAYS two pilots are i the cockpit.
And the second officers HAS to be able to fly alone!!!!!!
So .......... to die as PIC is very sad .......... but not a "big" problem in the cockpit.
If both pilots die or become very ill .......... that´s a problem; even if nobody in the cabin has a flying license :-(

I think if the weather conditions are fair, somebody on plain can program the autopilot! then the aircraft can land safely in theory.
I heard that autopilot is easy to switch on...

@LisaAnne064 Actually 'Frailty of old age' is a recognised cause of
death in the UK. I'm a doc and have certified a number of >80yrs old people with this when there was no other obvious main cause.
