saw him in hannover with DT... you could feel what DT lost without Portnoy... creativity, groove and having fun playing together. i respect Mangini for keeping the DT machine alive, but he is no equal replacement for Portnoy... they didn't even smile once during the show.
Have all forgot that it`s all about the music, and the BIG PICTURE? And btw, who else would have come upp with parts like Portnoy`s ? :D He is a genius !! Respect!! He is the youngest member of drummers hall of fame!! And he is not overrated at all. There are people that ere better than him, but NOT more creative!!!!
@aRETARTEDsquirl14 You're shitting me right? He is the MOST technical living drummer. He actually doesn't do a lot of speed based playing, please, listen to the man before you comment on him.
@alan6333 there IS NO best drummer ! GROW UP ! you can t compare portnoy to the old greats or the nowadays greats ... just study your instrument ( i assume you play the drums ) and you ll realise that portnoy is nothing special !! i like him - i respect him but the truth is the truth :\
this is so good! and its not even really one of his hard pieces in terms of technicality. listen to learning to live for some good odd time beats and hi-hat work.
why the hell are you all talking about triggering? with triggers, you can hear mistakes even clearer than without. only bad thing about it is that you can get troubles with the dynamics if you always change the dynamics afterwards.
Triggers are not another name for extra powerful drum mics. I hope you are joking when making that comment. As the principal said in the billy Madison spelling bee...we are all dumber after hearing that
@DTxOctavariumx Sorry but he's not using his fingers.that's press roll, not double stroke.if you want me to see a double stroke, it is present in this video at 0:19 or something like that, but that's not the point. There are metal drummers who kick asses and got an incredible technique like D'Virgilio or Harrison.MP plays in a very simple way. With a little bit of study you can do all of his tricks. Instead, you can't play like Gavin or Nick beacause they have "natural touch"
Say whatever you want.. This drums DO NOT sound like ordinary drums, not even close... I'n not here saying that you are wrong considering Mike Portnoy one of the greatest drummers of alll time, but in fact metal drumming involves nothing than super fast single strokes and bass drum techniques... The day that Portnoy uses a double stroke or a flam, call me...
@paolo1988 Mike uses flams all the time. Double strokes as well. I don't know what you think you're on to, but Mike is clearly one of the best drummers alive today, and possibly of all time.
@paolo1988 by the way you fucking tool, i think you will notice all drums on every song since the 80s bear no resemblance in sound to a real drum kit, this is because the sound is altered and shaped by the use of EQ,s reverb, compression and other outbord FX, which is how music is produced, i would know because i have a degree in music and audio production and i also record music in studios quite alot and it the way it is done, FOOL!
@paolo1988 Mike Portnoy has some of the most complicated drum beats out there...dumb ass. Look up dance of eternity. That shit's complicated. This is Prog rock/metal, not flat out metal.
@paolo1988 Mike only uses triggers on the bass drum and sometimes on the snare, triggers do not make drumming easier, they just make the hit more defined
@paolo1988 Fuck you you italian fuck tard! This is a great example of one of the greatest drummers of our time! And how fucking dare you insult Mike Portnoy! Do you wanna know what triggers sound like?! Look up Joey Joridison!! All he uses is triggers, he over uses them, if he didn't use them his drums would sound like shit! What in gods name makes you think he's triggering? I know what triggering is, TRUST ME!! And this aint it! It's not even close, it sounds nothing like triggers for god sakes
@paolo1988 What the fuck would even make you come to that conclusion?! This isn't even what typical metal drumming is! Typical metal drumming is mostly just blast beats and doublebass only! If you were to say this about Joey Jordison (again) I'd be on your side, but no! And Mike doesn't even need triggers! He could do anything he fucking wanted to without cheating his way to make people think hes good! So take the little knowlege you have with you and go kill yourself you worthless peice of shit
@killu626 this is actually not VERY hard, it just grooves like hell. What is hard though, is making these parts yourself.. it's a lot easier to play music already made than make your own this good.
@BenjaminProd, it is pretty tough, but yes i understand what you're saying. hes a veryyyy good drummer, not JUST for what he plays, but how no one else in the world (kindof) makes up stuff like he does.
@killu626 That not completely true though. Because he's such a Neil Peart fan, if you're paying attention, in a lot of his songs there are a lot of Neil based grooves and fills...
@Lobones0066 Why ale the aggression? Nobody said he is a bad drummer. Frederic just pointed out a fact that this is not THAT difficult. It's all about memorization, but the technical side of this beat is not that tricky.
Mike was always a genius in creating beats and fills that weren't all that difficult but SOUNDED difficult and they still keep amazing young drummers. I guess this gives Mike a compliment from a certain point of view.
@DrMorbid what the hell man? this really is difficult. I mean seriously, but he has done better drumming. and its not all about the technical aspect, if it sounds good its good, and with this said i believe that Portnoy is the best drummer ever. Listen to his drumming on a change of seasons, fatal tragedy, learning to live, octavarium, those are fucking amazing, this is just good.
@beastlyninja1 "...its not all about the technical aspect, if it sounds good its good..." Exactly man. This is a golden truth that should carved into stone. ;) I never said that it is a bad thing that this is not technically difficult. I was just pointing out a fact to clear things.
And by the way I love ACOS, Fatal Tragedy or Learning To Live. I used to be in a DT Tribute band (many years ago) for a reason. ;)
@DrMorbid you were in a DT tribute band? Im just gonna assume that you played drums, what was the hardest DT song you could (hopefully still can, there aren't enought talented drummers in this world) you could play?
@beastlyninja1 Yeah, of course I play the drums? The hardest? Probably "Dance Of Eternity". And the rest of the guys weren't able to learn it so we never really played it, but after months of torture I managed to learn it. :)
But personaly most problematic were the first ones I tried, because at that point I was only playing for 2 years or something. And the first one was "Erotomania". So it took me few years to get some skills to actually play it. :)
@beastlyninja1 Also keep in mind that we started at the time when "Scenes From A Memory" was the last album. And at the time of "Train Of Thought" we ended. So I tried only few things from "Six Degrees..." and I never played anything from "Train Of Thought" and newer albums.
@DrMorbid holy shit man, ive been playing bout 2 years now and thats the hardest song I can play, but the rest of the people in my band cant cover it, but really soon were gonna come out with a yyz cover
@beastlyninja1 Yeah, 2 years of playing is basically when I started learning DT songs. But after many years later I have to say, there is "playing" and there is PLAYING! Back in those days I was merely memorizing the strokes and doing them with my hands and feet more or less at the right moments. But giving it some feeling and groove? Making it a performance? Completely different story. ;)
But good luck with your efforts. As I said, DT stuff is a great school!
I love how what's being played on both drums and guitar are both insanely hard.
