im intrested in brewing my own beer and i was wondering could you use one of those huge plastic jugs used for those water despeners in like offices and at schools as a carboy? and i dont really know were i can get hops to add flavour could you use tea packets with the suger and yeast to make a beer?
@dinkydao Yeah bro, I always put my BO tube on the center of my 3 piece's. I used to go through the hassle of jamming my siphoning tubes down in the center of my stopper's, but that was just a major pain. One thing you have to watch for is breaking the center tube off of the 3 piece when either installing the BO tube or taking it off.
I have always hooked up a blowoff tube from the airlock and never had a problem. But I have an older airlock that is an open tube versus having the 4 small holes, so maybe that is why I have never had a problem. It is not dangerous, maybe messy of the stopper did blow (never happened in 20 years of brewing, though I have had airlocks blow that were not hooked up with a blowoff tube), but certainly not dangerous. Unles your spouse will kill you for making a mess, then OK I would agree.
The Ice Tea can setup is ok. However, hooking a blowoff from an airlock is dangerous. The Proteins from the Krausen can clog the small holes on the airlock and KABOOM beer geyser or glass carboy grenade. The right one is tempting fate. Get some nice thick 1-1/4" to 1-3/8" OD tubing. Santize and jam it right into the carboy. The airlock water should be santizing solution of liquor to keep it clean.
@OzzyCoop Actually I see strips on both carboys. I dont temp but, you are right. I should. I have zoned heating in my apartment so I set the back room at the desired temperature, close the door and curtains and it stays right on target all day.
Question: Because ale yeast works from the top, aren't you wasting your good yeast with a blow off fermenter? I am actually curious (doing my first homebrew now and I'm making an ale) about that because someone had told me that it is a concern with ales, but I don't see your foam rising into the blow off. I'm curious because I can't always be around to mind the brews, so I am considering going to blow off fermentation so I don't risk the airlock getting overrun with foam.
"A lager fermented with ale yeast" is an ale, not a lager. A lager is ALWAYS fermented with lager yeast and has been properly cold-conditioned.

@trachdog2 Not worth it, you might also give the drink to someone who has an allergy to latex. Its cheap, about £1.50 for to air locks.

Did you mean to put kräusen, or kraeusen, in the quotes? Because that is what it is actually called. Not sure what you spelled actually is.

First time I have seen the blow off tube used like that inserted over the center part of the airlock, nice!
I needed that a few weeks ago when I infected my "Hobgoblin Ale" taking out the 2" hose when it backfed the blowoff water.

@AtlantaHomeBrewer - Or, if you use a glass carboy, just buy a 1" tube and force it right into the neck of the carboy.
Bes thing about the 1" tube is it is nearly impossible to get it clogged with junk, so no worries about blowing out the tube either

You should really be controlling the temp of that beer while it's fermenting.

@bluemystic7501 He has a tabletop thermometer behind the blow off tube and a black thermometer strip on the left carboy.

@OzzyCoop
That just means he knows what the temperature is, not that he's 'controlling' the temperature.
bluemystic7501 1 year ago
@bluemystic7501 The temperature in my basement never varies more than a few degrees, even in summer, which is why I always ferment there
