imagine being messier. no team in the league wanted him after he led the canucks out of the p-offs 3 straight yrs. N.Y. brings him back after they felt he was washed up and he proved he was washed up by leading the rangers out of the p-offs in his last 3 yrs in N.Y. - instead of bowing out gracfully he hung around 7 yrs to long to set personal records. if that's not selfish i don't know what is. he was a great player when playing on a great oiler team and a great golfer when playing in N.Y.
If you look at it that way every single player in the NHL is selfish because they'd have to be in order to MAKE it let alone play the years the Moose did. It's a very cynical way of looking at a sports legend you have but I think it's a love of the game thing.
he knew himself that he was washed up after the rangers let him walk away to vancouver. he missed the playoffs 3 straight yrs in van. and then 4 straight yrs in n.y.! he was brought back to n.y. for one reason and one reason only. to put asses in the seats. his goal was to pass howe in points not get his team into the playoffs. if that's not selfish then i don't know what is. just look at the players that are right behind him in points and look at how many gms they played.
You're talking about 7 years of hockey he played. That is MOST of the years I was fortunate enough to play but alas I am no Mark Messier. The point is that I love hockey and wouldn't change those years even after a couple concussions, if you're healthy and playing in the NHL there's no better job in the world man. I'd bet on it.
yup! 7 yrs of hockey that he played and held the team back that he played for. he really needed to get those points and standing ovations that gretz got even if it meant not leading his team to the playoffs. he could've went out on top but he chose to slowly rack up numbers and play golf.
