Frodo, it's not that easy. There is good and bad, boring and exciting, alive and vibrant, and dead. A platitude cannot give any answers to the permanent quest for beauty and the strife for some perfection, for the eternal quest to bring some sense and order and wonder into a chaotic universe...
Awful interpretation, poorly conducted, sorry. The worst bit is from 1:50 to 2:00 the musicians are running over each other. I couldn't ear more... Mozart is not this confusion. I strongly suggest the Issac Stern(Violin), Pinchas Zukerman(Viola), Zubin Mehta(Conductor), New York Philharmonic Orchestra 1980. Listen to it and then decide.
How can people say that this is better than vengerov's performance with lawrence power? bashmet hasn't memorised his music, and although this doesn't always affect a performance,.. I think it does here! It just lacks the same amount of passion and emotion that vengerov and power have. there are loads of time it feels a bit rocky and like they're not as connected as it could be.
uch...this is so messy...i strongly recommend to everyone the Kim Kashkashian/Gidon Kremer version- so much cleaner/better/not so overly intense and showy
three seconds can ruin the mood of an entire piece... i thought u as a violinist would kno that... but i gave my opinion... and its not only that that ruins this piece.. its bashmets inability to memorize his music.. just makes the performance look weak....
One's inability to memorize their music doesn't matter, because a lot of the great violists, violinists, bassists, cellists, etc., don't. You count on how they're playing their music, not whether or not their looking at a piece of paper with clefts, notes, and etc. on it.
he may be your world best violist but not everyone else's... and if u like the vibrato he does at min 6 09 to 6 12 then i guess u haven't seen other violists play this piece...
this is horrible from bashmets part... ugly vibrato at min 6 09 to 6 12... i prefer vengerov and power put together.... and bashmet having to look at the music after playing this piece with other violinists makes him look so unprofessional... step up your game bashmet... go vengerov
You think it's terrible because three seconds of the piece didn't meet your standards? Composers didn't put vibrato markings in these pieces, so the players are free to do as they wish. This is a fantastic rendition...
I am dissapointed by that record. It seems that Vengerov playing Mozart with such a style and mood as if he was playing Shostakovich, not Mozart. Those rythmic and sound deviations, and inappropriate mood. Performance of Kagan and Bashmet is much better.
I don't mean to "lecture" anyone here. I am simply a classical music lover and though I am very qualified with my training, I don't think I know enough about the art.
I posted a few response because of your very first response.
wish you luck and hope we all continue to support this wonderful art and thanks fifura2000 for posting this wonderful performance.
you finally got it! "when she performs as a solo violinist w an orchestra, she always plays from memory..." Yes!
Reading music is not a "sin". I saw great conductor at reh. using music, checking, discussing with concert master but when come to performance, barely look at the score. Music should be in your head,if you are ready to perform. Good musician has good memorization. not "no one can memorize that much.." we use music to "learn" the piece... good enough for you???
I think we have been agreeing w each other all along. To elaborate what I said, I should say that it is very hard to memorize all 3 parts in Mozart's K364, basically is a "duet" concerto. There4, the score wud help to minimize mistakes.
I play in public, 2, and I never use a score like you said. But in a duet, I worry abt my partner's part so I bring the score, also sometimes when there's not enuf reh w a new orchestra, then I bring the score to remind me of what the conductor & I agreed on.
thx leopold. I do agree that for this particular performance is actually a duet-like and so reading music might be necessary. I was just replying honghong's comment on memorization as a performer. I said in my earlier post that I have not seen yuri B. perform without music and i was curious. it does not take away him being one of the best.
In fact, memorization is important. If we check out music competition, big or small, they reaquired memorization, if not, will be disqualified.
I have never seen Perlman or Zukermann perform a violin concerto with "sheet music" (??) or needed a music stand in front of them when they perform a violin conerto with major orchestra. In fact, most great musician choose to play from memories because is easier to be musical and since they know the music so well. Okay??
Oh, most great musicians are very good in memorizing music. We practice that at young age. I am surprise you did not know???
I agree it is better to play without music. But I have seen Zukerman in concert playing concertos with music. In his performance with Stern of the Sinfonia Concertante, they both used music.
Yes & no. I suppose you've seen Julia Fischer play. So is she good enough for U? Well, when she performs as a solo violinist w/ an orchestra, she alwys plays frm memory. But watch her record Moarzt's K364 on YT, U'll find even SHE has 2 look @ the scores. Maybe not for herself but she needs it to find out what the timing is 4 Gordan & the orchestra wud come in. She was reading a score for 3 parties. A good eg wud be like when Gordan almost forgot to come in. She's needs it 4 timng. Go chk it out
Dude, Bashimet is like my new hero! But, God i get so frustrated with the fancy camera work. It's awesome how the orchestra follows the Bashimet and Vengerov without a conductor, but the camera didn't once focus on the concert master. I was hoping to see more communication between Bashimet, Vengerov and the concertmaster but the camera kept focusing elsewhere.
one of the best violinist team up with the best Violist....
I found that Bashment almost never perform from memory?? anyone notice it? I was there at his premier recital in USA some 20 years ago at New England Conservatory (boston), he played the whole recital with music. He did that for almost all his performance including those with major orchestra.
As great as him, does he has problems remembering scores??
When one is playing a RECITAL, you play at your own pace, which is basically whatever you want.
However, when you are in a CONCERT playing a CONCERTO, you need to be aware of what your partner is doing and also the part the orchestra to be precise. Thus you need the "sheet music" - it's called a score.
Therefore, almost all concert masters/conductors or people playing as simple as a duet needed "sheet music". Okay?
All the great soloists and especially when they perform "concerto" with orchestra were played from memories. As for recital, we use "sheet music" (???) when we perform a sonata. Say if you are playing a mozart sonata with a pianist at a recital, it would be helpful to use score because it is almost like a chamber music, meaning, pianist is not just an accompanist.
Bashmet forever! Vengerov is kindof a cocky looking bloke and prickish, and Bashmet is totally puting up with him, esp. around 3 minutes. V shakes his big head so much, but it might just be his instrument is so small. ;)
I find this very very interesting, i would really preffer listening to the version of perlman and zukerman...But still this is a quite great convination....
In a way the camera work echoes the communicative ambient onstage - two soloists rather than a dialogue. I love at 3.25 - Vengerov finishes his passage rather brilliantly and flashes a glance at Bashmet, it seems to me expecting some kind of smile, or spirit of fun, but gets a stern face from Bashmet - Vengerov does an almost imperceptible double take, as he checks to make sure ! Bashmet doesn't look like a lot of fun to work with, and the result is a little like two cockerals in competition.
Wow - that's SO interesting! Vengerov's playing style actually makes Bashmet's style sound introverted!
A real shame the cameraman couldn't just film from the front and capture more of the interaction between the two though. One of the chief beauties of this piece is the way the two soloists have to communicate and mirror each other's phrasing during the performance. I've heard that aspect balanced much more thrillingly than this, but this is lovely nonetheless.
I used to think that the violas are insignificant, considering the fact that they don't enjoy as many as repertoires as the violins do. I really admire violists after I have switched to playing the viola - it's a challenge.
really so youve heard this peace played during the classical era? thats incredible im so glad you were able to here how its "supposed" to be played and talked to mozart about how he wanted this piece to sound. you ant call a piece terrible because emotion was emphasized more than you think it should be in this piece. im so glad im not you because if i had such a strict musical mindset id hate all classical musicians that have different interpretations then my own
Bashmet is a very enthusiastic conductor, he knows what he's doing, and he's SOOOO expressive. I love his Testore viola! It has the richest, deepest sound quality! Vengerov is the greatest violinist (that's my opinion)!
Hey, guys, the written cadenza (single sheet only) by Mozart for this piece has recently been found in a private collection in England and is going for about 100K Sterling. Check it out. sd goh (malaysia)
I can believe there is no God, and music like this still exists. I just feel that people's brains are so complex, their full effects are not truely ever going to be discovered, so you can say God created beauty, or you can say that a random bunch of neurons in Mozart's head meant he wrote music which is considered beautiful by me and you.
well i never said God created this music. Mozart did, everyone knows that. Beauty through music is a gift from God or some super natural being that created our complex world. I mean it didn't just come POOF out of mozart's brain!!
Why didn't it just come POOF out of his brain? That's what i was talking about with random neurons in his brain. Random chance can be see in many things, why not music?
Well no music can come out without inspiration. I'm not trying to cause an argument or dispute i'm just saying what i think. Music is beautiful and God helped in the process.
I think Mozart would be impressed with this. Vengerov and Bashmet's interpretations are dazzling and powerful. They brought their own style into it while keeping Mozart's alive. This sounds lush and emotional rather than dry and springy to me. However much I love this recording, I think I'm going to die if I dont get my hands on the Anne-Sophie Mutter/ Yuri Bashmet recording of this.
This is music created by God, Mozart only made the discovering of every element of the composition with his supranatural genius. I´m waiting that marvelous moment in the end of life to meet Mozart and lots of genial composers and performers...
Concerto... concertante ...concertare technically and etymologically speaking there is a challenge going on here, and that's the whole point. Concerto from the verb concertare means to compete. Either solistas go against each other or against the ripieno or otherwise. That's the beauty and genius of it... alive and interacting.
if there's like a part for two violas me and my friend enjoyed challenging each other. We both still got the feel of playing classical music. We would both try to improve the quality of something like bow stroke or something. Then there would be some times when we would just play for the enjoyment. Either way we still enjoyed it.
Bashmet should stick to his day job (playing viola) and like not conduct.... at all.. ever.. ever. ever and not think or dream or put it out in the universe to conduct...ever ever. Ever.
In spite of what 'period' performance folks might say about the brightness of the violin's sound here, I LOVE the sheer joy Vengerov brings to this movement -- this is exciting Mozart!
I'm a huge fan of Bashmet's as well, but he doesn't seem to be at his best here. Perhaps this is due to the lack of tone matching between the two solo instruments. Yuri's viola almost sounds muted throughout, especially when he's in upper positions on lower strings.
I'm with you 100%. Vengerov brings such vitality to Classical pieces. His approach is very "Russian", but it a fresh direction...not to say that Mozart isn't fresh or vibrant! Yeah... Bashmet has volume problems.
The orchestral exposition, there's so much spicatto the crunch obscures the notes. For a modern performance this is surprisingly tasteful. But still too heavy.
Your video clip is great and I've rated it as awesome. Please check out mine on being Baching Mad on Classical Music Composer trading cards (issued in 1912): Haydn, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and many more included.
always loved the song..its the violists mozart concerto.heh but this recording...i cant stand it. they are being too romantic for mozart. and somtimes vengerovs playing sounds sort of obnoxious.and uh isnt that rythm wrong in the orchestra part after the solists play their opening phrase? ....thought it was 8th not 16th. and really.. yuri.. did you HAVE to slide from the f to the b flat...
Better than Pablo Casals and Mstislav Rostropovich? Your opinion would go against the overwhelming majority of classical music lovers and of musicians.
Since when did Rostropovich play the viola?! Get your facts straight. Bashmet is a VIOLIST, and one of the best. Actually, he's better than most violinists and cellists! :P
That was a foolish slip that I probably made too late at night to write comments. Of course Rostropovich (Slava for short) was a cellist. I have quite a few of his CDs, and have heard him live twice. You've never really heard the Dvorák cello concerto until you've hear him play it. As I live in the Washington DC area, I've heard him play and conduct many times. Sadly he conducted the Dvorák cello while a mediocre cellist played the role. They should have switched positions.
Excelente.

GAH!! everytime i listen to this i get goosebumps :D
its so beautiful and i mean how could anyone not belive in a God when theres music like this?!?
xXLeafXNinjaXx 4 years ago
I can believe there is no God, and music like this still exists. I just feel that people's brains are so complex, their full effects are not truely ever going to be discovered, so you can say God created beauty, or you can say that a random bunch of neurons in Mozart's head meant he wrote music which is considered beautiful by me and you.
nordmannnick 4 years ago
well i never said God created this music. Mozart did, everyone knows that. Beauty through music is a gift from God or some super natural being that created our complex world. I mean it didn't just come POOF out of mozart's brain!!
xXLeafXNinjaXx 4 years ago
Why didn't it just come POOF out of his brain? That's what i was talking about with random neurons in his brain. Random chance can be see in many things, why not music?
nordmannnick 4 years ago
Well no music can come out without inspiration. I'm not trying to cause an argument or dispute i'm just saying what i think. Music is beautiful and God helped in the process.
xXLeafXNinjaXx 4 years ago
Perhaps, as has been said before that if God ever spoke to man it is through the divine music of Mozart.

I think you don't know much about composing

Dane, that is a sweet viola sounds...

conducting is not always just about beating time. i think his conducting is musical and that is good enough for a good, professional ensemble.
zero9046 4 years ago
beautiful, but i think vengerov should get some of the bashmet's style, his sound sounds like with authorithy, venegerov sounds like weak
Cayo255 4 years ago
well he has the highpitched instrument and isn't mozart supposed to be like light and happy :D

I would also like to amend my post a little:
I think Mozart would be impressed with this. Vengerov and Bashmet's interpretations are dazzling and powerful. They brought their own style into it while keeping Mozart's alive. This sounds lush and emotional rather than dry and springy to me. However much I love this recording, I think I'm going to die if I dont get my hands on the Anne-Sophie Mutter/ Yuri Bashmet recording of this.
Bashmet is god. =]

Either way we still enjoyed it.

bashmet es bueno pero vengerov es asombroso, bien
hxio21 4 years ago
are these guys challenging each other in the middle of the song. The violinist started.

Bashmet should stick to his day job (playing viola) and like not conduct.... at all.. ever.. ever. ever and not think or dream or put it out in the universe to conduct...ever ever. Ever.
beemozbach 4 years ago
lol. i agree totally!

Clearly Bashmet is an amazing violist...but I've seen middle school teachers conduct better. Its a little bit funny.
jdwalker84 4 years ago

Yeah... Bashmet has volume problems.
ares7768 4 years ago
Bashmet really can't conduct! And the rhythm, articulation and intonation in both is surprisingly sloppy.

The orchestral exposition, there's so much spicatto the crunch obscures the notes. For a modern performance this is surprisingly tasteful. But still too heavy.

OMG!! Mozart is just so fucking BRILLIANT!! damm this is just soo good...

always loved the song..its the violists mozart concerto.heh but this recording...i cant stand it. they are being too romantic for mozart. and somtimes vengerovs playing sounds sort of obnoxious.and uh isnt that rythm wrong in the orchestra part after the solists play their opening phrase? ....thought it was 8th not 16th. and really.. yuri.. did you HAVE to slide from the f to the b flat...

i prefere the later(?) version with vengerov and power; istalso fun to compare, i think. and its more mozart :)

thank you! i'm glad somebody else noticed! eh.. i like vengerov, so i'll cut him some slack.

Yeah right.

Better than Pablo Casals and Mstislav Rostropovich? Your opinion would go against the overwhelming majority of classical music lovers and of musicians.
gerryrains 4 years ago
Since when did Rostropovich play the viola?! Get your facts straight. Bashmet is a VIOLIST, and one of the best. Actually, he's better than most violinists and cellists! :P
UberProdigy 4 years ago
That was a foolish slip that I probably made too late at night to write comments. Of course Rostropovich (Slava for short) was a cellist. I have quite a few of his CDs, and have heard him live twice. You've never really heard the Dvorák cello concerto until you've hear him play it. As I live in the Washington DC area, I've heard him play and conduct many times. Sadly he conducted the Dvorák cello while a mediocre cellist played the role. They should have switched positions.
