  • I lIke Your Masks!

  • @RipperMen17

Thanks. Most are from Death Studios.

  • how long did it take you to learn this?, and your bass sounds great

  • @LeGiTxOvErDrIvE

That's a tough question. It was a long time ago and it took some time to actually learn the notes. Some more time to get it to the point where I was able to play along with the recording. And even more time to be able to play it along with other players. In some senses I'm still working on it and I began the day the album came out. Sorry I couldn't be more precise. Thanks.

  • nice tutorial thx man

  • @peruloc

    Thanks you.

  • If you don't mind me asking, what model Rickenbacker is that? I have a 1978 model 4001, but the bridge pickup on your Rick looks different than the one on mine. Also, mine doesn't seem to have that monstrous, growling tone, but I'm not sure if that is the bass, an amp, effects, or just playing style.

  • @jjhh2

It's a 4003 which I got in 2008 or 9. Everything is stock except for the bridge which I replaced with a Hipshot and the bridge pick-up bezel which I got from Pickguardian. The pick-up have adjustable pole pieces that allow you to raise or lower the height which helps balance out the individual string volumes.

I think some of the "tone" you're hearing might be the way I have the bass set up - with low action, neck set straight and light strings coupled with the way I strike the strings

  • Excellent breakdowns. Thanks for taking the time!

  • @zddoodah

Thank you. I hope you find it helpful.

  • Cool Tutorial! I havent worked it through yet but I ve got two additions:

the "triplets" you refer to (02:07m), are no triplets! (16th or so) - your examples at 2:14 are! - i would recommend starting with the middle finger.

and the riff at 02:41 is:

    c c# d# e f# g# Bflat Bflat c# d# e d# b [slide to:] c

Thanx, you got me started working on this song!

    Peace Bro!

  • @olehemp Two Bb's in a row?? That's not right. It's C-C-C#-D#-E-F#-G#-A-B-C#-D#-E-D#-B-(slide to)-C (all notes are 16th notes except the first two C's, which are 32nd notes, and the last C, which I believe is a 16th and quarter tied).

You're right about the "triplets" being 16th notes.

  • Hey man thanks for breaking down those triplets. I'm new to the bass and learning some new tricks really makes playing that much more fun for me. Your posts remind me of a saying...'for the love of the game'...thanks again for taking time to posting these clips.

  • @cdbeckm

Thank you. I'm really glad you found it useful.

  • Can anyone tell me how to get that tone?

  • I don't mean to be mean but: should a person who needs to be taught to use the pinkie teach yyz? Missing some notes in main riff as well. Good simplified version I guess

  • @XxInputxX

If you "don't mean to be mean" then don't. Being mean requires a decision making process and making a choice. Saying something stupid, on the other hand, can often not be helped. You have my condolences.

  • @TJH3113 Woooaah didn't mean to cause such a rage of that magnitude.

  • @XxInputxX

    rage?

  • @TJH3113 i don't think it's stupid to ask you to really break it down, and post the tabs for every section. the point i've been trying to make to you which you don't seem to get is that this song is very tedious, and to just say, "i'll play this part slowly now" is really a lazy approach to teaching and you're doing a disservice to the players out there that really want to learn it. we get it, you're great, but most of us aren't

  • @TJH3113 lmao, well said my friend.

  • @XxInputxX I don't mean to be mean but: I went over to your channel and was unable to find your tutorial showing the correct way to play this song since you seem to be an expert. Maybe you could post a link for us. Or you could take your pinky and stick it up your ass until you come back with that video.

  • @morbidangel47 I don't give free lessons. Sorry.

  • you're a much better player than you are a teacher

  • @cbarrett34

You're right, I have no business teaching anything.

  • @TJH3113 i apologize for making that comment, it was a rash and spontaneous comment. however, i feel that if you're really going to try to teach. then you really have to break the song down, and tab it out for people. this isn't an easy song. and the fast way you explain triplets is pretty bad. this song is accessible for intermediate students, however, you're an advanced player and you're teaching so fast. you have to dumb it down a bit, and really break this lesson down into several

  • @TJH3113 video posts. YYZ is a complex song, as are most Rush songs. but as a guitarist and intermediate bassist myself, i've realized that some songs that appear to be very hard are within reach, if i really take the time to break them down into sections and hammer away at each section. i guess the point i'm trying to make also is that you can be a great player, but that doesn't mean you're a great teacher. you might want to get some books on how to teach, and also tab each section out

  • @TJH3113 this song deserves several vids devoted to different sections. just for you to "slow it down" and play the fast runs slower to a slower metronome beat is a lazy approach. that's all i'm saying. however, with that all said, i think you're one of the best bassists i've seen in a long time on youtube

  • @cbarrett34

My response, that "I have no business teaching anything" was not said sarcastically or in anger. I'm not a teacher and have no aspirations to teach. That being said, if someone asks for my help with something, I'll do what I can with the skills I have to help them out. And that's what these "tutorials" (for lack of a better word) are - a response to requests for help. When I was learning these songs I'd have killed to be able to see and hear someone playing the parts slowly.

  • @TJH3113 it's not enough to just play the phrases slowly. you have to post tabs too if you truly want other bassists to learn it. you can't assume that they are all intermediate-expert and have no use for tabs. that was my point

  • @cbarrett34 First of all, he's already doing a favour. Second, this song isn't for beginners, these song is for people at that level you just stated, and it's important to learn songs without tabs, by using your ears, because it makes you a better musician. Just look at Troy here, he never had tabs.

  • @tallicafan250169 that's the stupidest thing i've ever heard. just look at troy here, he never had tabs? well, that's good for him, but you can't expect everyone who watches this to be at his level. for a song like this, that best strategy is breaking it down into several videos, and tabbing out each part. that's what i would do

  • @cbarrett34 No one expects them to be at that level, but if they ever want to be that good, a good start would be to quit using tabs, which are practically crutches. Also, if you want it done that wary, do it yourself. Anything worth doing should be done properly. Tabs are all over the internet, it's not hard to Google them and look at them in addition to this video.

  • @tallicafan250169 OH REALLY??? tabs are on the net? no way. i didn't know that........ and in other news, you can buy eggs at the grocery store too

  • @cbarrett34 You act sarcastic because you know I'm right. How is that related to this video anyway? You want tabs, go look for them. You want a 'better' video, go make one. Have a nice life.

  • @tallicafan250169

I just saw your exchange with cbarrett34. Thanks for taking up the challenge, but I'm sorry you wasted your time - with all due respect to him, it's sort of like talking to a wall. I agree with everything you said. Many tabs out there are terribly inaccurate. People should look at them more critically and use them in conjunction with their own ears.

  • i love the rickenbacker sound!

  • @Pillowpally

    Cool.

  • Thanks for the breakdown, helped with some of the things I was confused on. Love your videos, great playing and very helpful!

  • @djdel005

Thank you very much. I'm glad you found the video useful.

  • That open note tripplet thing, That was really cool, I'm definatly going to try that. Does it matter on the held down strig what fret it's on?

  • @OrgasmikMode

I'm not sure what you mean.

  • I like this. I know the song well, but there's always something one misses. By the way, I LOVE that Mapleglo. I'm saving my pennies for one now. That's my "dream bass" right now.

  • @JeffTBPlayer

Glad if it helped. I don't play the Ric much these days. At least the price has dropped a bit on them. A year ago they were going for $1,900 and now I'm seeing them around for $1,500.

  • Great video. how does your bass sound like that? sounds so bass-y and crisp.

  • @manolo578

Thanks. I've got a microphone right in front of the amp - that's just how it sounds.

  • @TJH3113 Do you recommend a short scale bass for a beginner?

  • @manolo578

No. You're better off toughing it out for a year or two on a full scale bass rather than adjusting to one after playing a short scale.

  • Could someone please explain to me what Triplets are? I've been trying really hard to find out what people are talking about but I can't find out what the damn things are!

  • @JayJW410 triplets are where you play three notes per beat. if you are in 4 4 time, a quarter note would be one noet per beat, an eighth note would be two, a sixteenth note would be four, and a triplet would be three.

  • @JayJW410 1 la le 2 la le 3 la le 4 la le

  • Great tutorial

  • @scusmcsgt

    Thank you.

  • @495Alex

    Your welcome and thanks.

  • Hey TJH3113, just wannet to say thanks for this great lesson, ive been trying to pull this stuff now for 1 year, and now you just come along dancing and making me pull this of on 5 min, Damn your good, thanks for everything, rock on!!!

  • @Oge129

It was my pleasure. I'm glad if you found it helpful. Thanks.

  • Okay, until NOW, I had no hope of attempting this song. There was a little piece of shit interpretation I had going for a few months until I watched this video and realized that Geddy played the notes so fucking fast I had no hope of dissecting them. Kudos to you, my friend!!!

  • @ChickenFaeces

Thanks, I'm glad you found it helpful.

  • those masks are cool as shit

  • @hawkeyefan3

    Thanks. Most are from Deathstudios.

  • I'm in a summer rock camp (im 13) and theres a competition where u have to play something with ppl outside ur group. me and some others chose to ACTUALLY try YYZ, so ur saving my life bro, gotta learn it in one night and im afraid of the solos to come. Once again thanks a lot!

  • @MrTacoInc

Well best wishes to you in trying to learn it on one night. Good luck and thanks a lot.

  • do u have tabs for the scale played at the beginning?

  • @steeleninja3

    No I don't. Sorry.

  • @steeleninja3 Google: "Rush Tablature Project" for the best tabs if needed.

  • First time I hear you talking :-)! You have a nice accent and voice.

  • @MrNorbi14

I don't think so but thanks.

  • thanks man it helped a lot

  • @bigmags212

Cool. I'm glad you found it useful.

  • @TJH3113

    Well for me,you do! :-)

  • "that's allot harder than I'd thought it'd be, playing slow.."

    Made me laugh

  • @icemanshiz

    It was.

  • hey man could you tab out that triplet exercise for me? I watched it a million times but couldn't figure out exactly what you were doing.

  • @GoodFerYouProduction

I'm not very familiar with tabs but maybe at some point I could give it a try. Could you narrow down the times? And don't stop trying to work it out by ear.

  • thatlittle part from 2:18 to 2:22 is likek its own new song Lmao

  • @TheMegaBuddy

That was an "exercise" I used to play.

  • I just want to say thanks for that quick run down on playing triplets like that. It was very helpful in my self-taught learning of the bass. I'm slowly getting this song down...

  • @SaaberProductions

You're welcome, I glad you found it helpful. And thank you for watching and letting me know.

  • If you find that bass missing some day, I have it so don't worry (disclaimer: I'm kidding)

  • @stever199

No problem. All my basses have tracking devices installed in them. hah!

  • I didn't relise you go from the c on the a to the g on the d, i always thought it was the d on the a. Good ear!

  • @Equipe3v

    I try.

  • HI, im trying to learn this song, but i have a problem, afterthe triplets part, do you usae the same finger to stroke the 1st and 2nd string? I just cant seem to get the time right, And are all the notes on the little riff all the same speed?

Also i have a more general question, as ii was trying to play this song for some reason my index fretting finger started to hurt, and after 2 days it sttill hurts when iplay, should i stop and wait for it to heal or continue to play with pain?

  • @Ingratil

No. After the triplets I use my index then middle finger - alternately to finish the riff. I do believe all the notes are the same speed but there is a slight pause before the last note.

What part of your finger hurts? The tip? Or does the pain feel internal, in the joint?

  • It is finally here!!! the YYZ bass tutorial! I love it its so nice to hear it slow and with only the drum track too! Cant wait to play it like you! Thanks Troy!

  • @jetjockeyf14

    I hope it's helpful.

  • Never knew exactly which notes were in the main riff until now! Cheers. Now if only I could play it to speed. ;)

  • @jedw

Cool. Just take it slow and build up your speed.

  • @jedw

And remember not to dig in too hard as it will slow you down.

  • @TJH3113 That's right, make sure and play it close to the neck for minimun tension, and learn to just let your fingers glide over the strings, rather than hammering them. I find playing a little first to get your hands sweaty really helps for this, since your sweat lubricates the strings and makes playing much easier.

  • @Equipe3v

    All good tips there.

  • @thatonetallkid444

Thanks. Sorry to hear about the loading issue. Once and a while I'll come across a video that loads slowly but if I keep refreshing the screen of reloading it, it will usually snap out of it. It depends, for me, a lot on the time of day I'm on YouTube as to how quickly videos load.

  • Well played Mauer!

  • @hous4kat

Thank you? (I'm not sure what "Mauer" means. It could be derogatory for all I know).

  • @TJH3113 Its a commercial for sony PS3 the show with Jow Muaer, catcher for the Minnasota Twins. I'm a little retarded but I meant that as a compliment!

  • Troy you make it look so easy. Thanks very much for doing this tutorial. I always wanted to learn this song but could not figure out the parts. The use of the metronome is a great tool to help every try and learn the song.

Cheers and thanks again. Hopefully one day, I will be able to post the song.

  • @constantine2112

Thank you. I look forward to that post. I have a couple of yours on deck, I just need to set some time aside to view them.

  • A microphone for your voice would be nice, but apart from that minor bit, very helpful! I look forward to more

  • @GilbertKMusic

    Thanks.

  • as always, first rate. The metronome breakdown was especially useful.

  • @ifutureman

Thanks. That's the best I could do.

  • Great Job Troy, I like a lot of tutorials! Keep doing it =D

    Cheers!

  • @fboriani

    Thank you.

  • Watch out MarlowDK, !!! Great lesson, thanks. Funny, I lead with alternate fingers. Maybe that's where my inconsistency is coming from. Keep 'em coming. If you're taking requests, I'm having trouble isolating the solo parts... Could you help with that down the road?

  • @vtx1300dave

I don't think Marlow has anything to worry about. He's a great communicator and knows what he's talking about.

The fact that you lead with your middle finger shouldn't make a difference at all - the principle is the same. Whichever finger strikes the second note in the triplet - just let motion and gravity hit the third note for you with that finger.

My "interpretation" of the solos will be covered in the second part.

  • By far the best YYZ tutorial on the web, thank you!

  • @CLbass37

Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.

  • Excellent job! Nice touch with explaining the right hand picking idea

  • @JimmyJames714

    Thanks.

  • Your screen saver kick in at 4:35?

  • @wmpr88

    Yes.

  • It's a classic Rush. Always wanted to learn the tempo of the bass, and now I can train watching a video of excellent quality. Thank you very much, I find it very cool that is not restricted only to Rush, playing significant songs in which the instrument stands out or is very interesting part of other songs. Congratulations on the channel, success and happiness

  • @egresso

    Thank you very much.

  • Dude, this was so helpful, thanks for doing this. The triplet technique was especially helpful.

  • @LeForks

Good. I hope it was of some help.

  • That's weird, I learned how to play the song using the same triplet technique you use but I naturally lead it with my middle finger then use my index to "drop" down to the D string.

  • @treetarded

That's cool. The principle is the same.

  • thank you for the triplets tip!

  • @germatrix

I know it was brief but hope it helps.

  • What a heroic individual you are. I almost feel guilty using all this knowledge that you have taken so much time to aquire. My war with 'that fill that starts on the high E', is finally over (very similar to the second 'bass solo' right?) thanks to this. Cheers Troy.

  • @FearOfTheDark987

I'm not sure about "heroic" but I'm happy to share any knowledge I have with anyone. You still have to play it after all. Not sure which fill you're talking about. the last one before the main riff? I think that starts on the high D.

  • @TJH3113 Sorry no, perhaps the word 'fill' was misleading. The part which happens at around 1:07, with the slide up to the E. I always found the exact notes here very difficult to pick.

  • @FearOfTheDark987

    Gotcha.

  • You're not buttoned up! (Immediately added to favorites)

Oh yeah, amazing tutorial as well. ^_^

  • @nikoguy

Yeah, I decided to cut loose. Thanks.

  • you have the precision of a robot, its not fair

  • @21Rushisaband12

    Hah! Thanks.

  • Hey Troy, Great job. Not an easy job to play this out at normal speed or slowed down! I'm sure I'll be referring to your video when I get to YYZ. Thanks!

  • @Dan441734

    Thanks Dan.

  • I'm sure this will help alot of bassists everywhere, including me. Thank you for this, the Holy Grail of bass songs.

  • @Legionbass19

I hope it does help. Thanks.

  • Beatiful!!!

    Thanks!!!

  • @SonharNET

    Thanks. Hope it helps.

  • THANK YOU. I love your tutorials. They're amazing!

  • @TheNarchives

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • Great job, really helps.

  • @Zeon707

    Good. Thanks.

  • oh...i've beed waiting for this! awesome

  • @wnils

    You? Thanks.

  • @TJH3113 probably more so for part 2 I expect. :) YYZ has always been tough for me. (I expect it always will)
