Please find them a groundcherry, horse nettle or silverleaf to put them on, so they can continue to feed. They are host-specific, and only eat nightshades.
That cat was a tobacco hornworm. It spit because you were squeezing too hard.
School teachers love them for science/nature studies, too.
Haha, it's a shame these guys can be such pests in the gardens as kids. When they're adults, they turn into important night pollinators. I found one on my tomato plants, and decided to pick him off and bring him inside. I cut him a branch from my tomato plant to gnaw on, and will look for other plants he can eat that aren't in my garden, so he can grow up. Great video!
@S0XF0X yea i do the same thing i have 3 soon to have 4 they were on my moms topsy turvy tomato plant! any way if you see eggs on its back or little parsites kill it because the worms (wasp larvea) will eat it alive which is torture for it
I kinda felt sorry for it though and it seemed so innocent and harmless when you were carrying it. I can appreciate the aesthetic beauty of the caterpillar, but .... it must die!
giv it to your cats to play with. at least nuthing goes to waiste around here.
my orange wild cat raised in the wild and eventually trust us to be apart of his life. the cat could kill an catch teenage rabbits and playd with big garden snakes for toys, was super friendly with us.
we tryed taking him on a road trip and he got loose at a rest stop around 1 exit before south of the border south carolina.
that rest stop btw is king of rest stops cuz of the landscape, he'll be ok
I don't like to spray if I can help it either. I like hornworms though because they become Carolina Sphinx moths which is a type of hummingbird moth and a good pollinator. Check out my channel and play list for moths. You'll see I actually raise these guys and pick them from my tomatoes. If you have kids it's a good project to teach them about metamorphosis.
3 of those damn things killed one of my little tomato plants. only reason i didnt kill it was because it was infested with parasitic wasp and they were dying anyways so i just removed them.
why am i watching this and how did i get here.

I had four on one tomato plant...so I drowned them in soapy water. I wouldn't be so angry with them if they weren't so hard to remove...

If it has the wasp eggs are larvae I just remove it and let the wasps do their thing. If not, I throw it to the chickens and watch the fun.
