I only took a year of Spanish in high school. But even I can hear when someone is proficient in the language, and when a person is not. One can tell that Jackie knew what she was speaking of here. Unlike her brother-in-law. Right after Ted Kennedy died last year, I heard a Spanish radio ad that he had done a year earlier endorsing Obama. It was funny as hell - Ted meant well, but his pronounciations would have been corrected in my Spanish class!

I remember this ad. This was the first Presidential campaign where someone attempted to go after the Spanish speaking voters. Jackie could speak several European languages and was highly educated. For you younger people who say that she sounds like she is reading, well that is the way she spoke in English also.

@PiessDescalzos Well, we've been TOLD over and over agian that she was "lovely". I think her eyes are WAY too far apart for that and that mousey voice seemed to dwell on the most mundane things. More importantly, I'm not entirely sure it should matters. I mean, some of this stuff is just left-over crap from another era...this whole "Camelot" thing. We're told she spoke 5 languages but I can only find evidence of three. Her English and French were perfect. Her Spanish was JUST AWFUL!

I do think she is lovely. Yes, she is certainly not the perfect woman that the Kennedys and the media made her out to be, but I do consider her to be lovely. And believe me, her Spanish is not bad. Spanish is my first language, and I was able to understand everything. My personal belief is that if one is able to comprehend the other person, then they are good enough; it doesn't matter if he/she has a strong accent.

@Piess She's READING a cue-card. Her Spanish is horrific (soy Cubano). Personally, a woman has to do more than fret about Tea At Noon and stains on the carpet to be "lovely". She was a kept-woman. Typical of that era where men were expected to fool around and the wife was expected to IGNORE it. She can be forgiven for being being caught in the 1960s, but please...let's not embellish her beyond her station. She was a privileged housewife and a baby maker. Jackie was often sold to the American public as someone who spoke 5 languages FLUENTLY. Not true. She spoke 2 languages fluently and the rest, one could say, she had a passing interest in learning. If you can help pass along the myth that this is a "lovely" woman, I see nothing wrong with correcting you.

I agree with you, I lived in Florida and most Cubans speak english with a VERY VERY STRONG CUBAN ACCENT! you can tell they are cubans from miles away!!!
