@mctwist74 Parts have been surprisingly easy to find via eBay and the various rotary forums. Many people came forward to volunteer parts when they found out I was restoring a Cosmo. Then what I can't find, I create or adapt from another car.
my brother had a rx5 very fukn clean.. blew the motor sat outside for a year .. got stolen.. very few in australia :( i miss dat thing.. now if we find a rx5 in da street we will follow it.. supper dam rare
Sounds like it was maybe running on 1 rotor? Those old school 13B motors are cool though. I'd keep it and rebuild it rather than going for a later one
@22ness0hayden As I had to pour fuel down the carburetor to start it, it was "sort of" running on both rotors. This engine is being made into a 6 port 13B using GSL-SE irons, so that the center iron will have injector bungs and so I can benefit from the 6 port system. I'll be using a GSL-SE lower intake, TII/FD upper and building a 6 port turbo engine with functional aux ports. The torque curve will be awesome and fit the car quite well.
@MuscleCars93 Thank you! And the car is now in my shop, so the project has started. I spent Saturday just cleaning the thing out (3+ hours of vacuuming), putting it up on ramps, removing the hood, etc. I hope to post video part 1 of the restoration/modification sometime this week. Another project begins!
@MuscleCars93 Part 1 of this project has been posted. Check out my other videos. I already even have enough footage for part 2 and 3, as soon as I get time to edit it.
the ever so popular cloud of "initial-start-smoke-from-sitting-for-some-time" I bought a 74 Rx-3 about 10 years ago and got the same turn over and smoke. ahhh the memories, too bad I sold it though. :(...
It is in storage right now. I'll begin restoring it sometime this spring. I plan to make a series of videos of the restoration and post them as it progresses.
I've been too busy to start on the Cosmo, as I am still finishing my RX-7 project. This spring/summer, however, I will start work on the Cosmo. As soon as I have some space in my shop.
Oh man, just noticed a 944 behind the Cosmo. Should've bought that too. ^^
I think a 944 with a rotary would be pretty interesting. I've seen one with a V10 from a Viper before... The guy had to do extensive modifications to the firewall and front subframe to get it to fit.
The 944 was stored in the same lot as I was storing the Cosmo, but it belongs to someone else. Believe it or not, underneath it was like Swiss cheese. A 944 with a rotary seems odd. Just get a 2nd gen RX-7 instead and have a sleeker looking, better handling and more reliable car in the first place.
Thank you. I just pulled apart the donor engine on the weekend. The housings are junk but I will use the Cosmo housings in combination with the GSL-SE end plates to make an "old school" 6 port 13B.
I'm SO happy that you decided to get gem before it was crushed. You seriously deserve an award for taking it upon yourself to do something that obviously nobody else had the guts to do. Hope to see a video eventually of this beauty looking like a 20 year old high end hot looking model, just like she used to.
I just hope it didn't get into the engine too much. I'm not planning on using that engine but early 13B parts are hard to find and I'd like to preserve them.
No. I've only had it since last September. I will be starting on it sometime this summer and will post to my website, the RX-7 Club and YouTube when I do.
This car is far superior to the RX-8. It blows the RX-7 and the RX-8 out of the water. This car was a masterpiece. I'd put a turbo V8 in one and I'd be the king of the road in it. The body style tops the Mustang's as well. There is no comparison. This is hands down THE best car Mazda ever produced. It has at least 260 horsepower STOCK. A true legend.
I think the 13b in the U.S. market Cosmo put out around 110hp. A turbo V8? Might as well want to put a Cummins diesel in it for the same end result. Glad that it was saved from the crusher.
nice find man! ive been told im the only one on vancouver island with a rx2 :). ive seen two repu's and swear on my heart i seen a faded almosst flat blue rusty r100 with a 10a beat up and almost ready to pop. also it was a hippy looking girl driving it made me sad and sure hope its not in a junk yard! but i bet it is...
That's the funny thing about Mazda rotary. You can clearly trace the evolution of both the car and engine by each successive model. Honestly I don't think Mazda has made a rotary car I am not interested in...well, besides the FD and RX-8. :-)
The people who say it's a piece of junk or waste of money are those that simply do not have the talent themselves to take on a project like this. So they bolster their fragile self esteem by making fun of others. My plan is to restore the car, keep it for a few years and then probably sell it so that I can go on to another project (I have too many vehicles right now and frankly don't have the space for another).
Well, since the only thing you are going to do is make a worthless comment every day or two (sometimes twice a day) without bothering to reply to my request to justify them, I'm just going to block your account. It's obvious that you don't have the time, talent, funds, knowledge and drive to restore a car so instead you try to fill your own fragile self esteem by attempting to make fun of others. Kids these days; so sad.
I have one simple question : this video is from 2007 I would love to know if you managed to finish it or at least make something more interesting with that rare and beautifull machine ?? Oh by the way what do you want to do with it suit up or something like that or just old school ??
I've not had time to do much work on it yet due to working on my other cars. I knew that it would be a while before I could get to it when I first purchased the car, so I've stored it properly. With any luck, this summer I will have time to begin restoring the Cosmo. I now have a facility to work in so I have space to do more then one project at a time.
Come one, enough with the child like comments. I've replied to every one of your comments with logic and politeness, but you can't seem to refute my replies with anything worth reading. I don't think you're in any way qualified to judge my ability to restore this car based on the comments you've left. Now if you want to reply further, at least address what I've already said. If it's just insults, I've grown bored of them and will just block your comments if it continues.
I'm going to do a writeup, but I'm not sure if will be as detailed as my previous threads. Must of this will be restoration instead of fabrication so I don't know if it will be as interesting to the outsider. However you can be certain it will be documented properly. :-)
I don't understand why this idiot is making a big deal about removable parts. The important thing is it's a good shell. Perhaps a totaled car with all the appropriate accessories would have been a better candidate for a restore.
I just don't understand it. . . Why do some people just plain hate rotary engines? I mean, I hate corvair engines- but you don't see me looking up corvair videos to call them retards.
If someone hated Rotary engines so much why would they be looking at videos with cars they know have Rotary engines in them anyways. Other people sometimes.
Looks like someone installed an aftermarket sunroof which is now gone. That should be a fun repair. So of course you'll need to locate a headliner as well. That'll be easy. The grille, door handles, trim, glass, cowl, marker lights are all missing. The headlights are still there so you've got that going for you. Do you have to be a wanker to own a wankel?
The sunroof is in the car. I'm trying to decided whether to use it or just fix the roof. Why would I locate a headliner instead of just make it? I don't think you really read my replies because I mentioned that almost all the trim is accounted for minus the bumpers, grill and tail lights. You'll notice that all the glass is clearly visible in the video except the middle windows which are rolled down.

You paid for that thing?? You'd think the bone yard would just give it to you. The second generator RX-7 was considered a 944 rip-off and a sad follow up to the more popular and stylish first generation. I'd have more respect for you if you pumped your entire income into one of those instead.....okay....I still wouldn't have any respect for you even then. In any case, this basket case deserves the crusher and you need a new haircut Garth. To all your pals....blow me!
I've owned several 1st gens and love them. Without a doubt they are a more pure sports car then the 2nd gen but that by no means says that the 2nd gen was a sad follow up. Indeed, it won Car Of The Year for what, 5 years or so? Clearly there is some similarity between it and the 944 but the RX-7 tested better then the 944 in every way with the exception of fuel mileage. The shape of the 2nd gen is clearly an evolution of the 1st gen, which would naturally lead to a 944 type shape.
The history of how the FC came about it's shape is well documented. Read the Yamaguchi book for the histroy so you can intelligently discuss the car in the future.
Now as for my 2nd gen, come on. To honestly sit there and say it's not a great car just shows something is really wrong with your viewpoint. Everytime I show the car it is roundly loved, though some don't agree with the colour scheme. And while it was an expensive project, no one but an immature kid dumps their entire income into a car project. Doing so is just stupid.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You have a donor car for this one?? Hmmm...I thought this might make a good donor for someone needing scrap metal. So you picked out the color and wheels, huh? Very impressive...you're almost there mate! Oh, I visited your page....I'm still chuckling. Time to grow up and get a real car sonny!
The engine doner is an '84 GSL-SE RX-7 that is a parts car of mine. The body is rather rotted but the rest is in good shape. I'll be building the 6 port engine with some minor porting work, NA lower intake, then a modified TII upper intake. A small turbo (GT3076) will provide a little bit of a boost as the stock 130HP on the Cosmo is a bit weak.
You act as if I've never built a car before, and in that sense you'd be dead wrong. Not only my own "Project Tina" which has been acclaimed all over the world and will be featured in a book, but many other smaller projects over the years. Oh, did I mention that tomorrow I'll be moving into a shop, with the Cosmo not far behind? I'm quite eager to begin working on it considering how straight the body is. Though I do have a few other projects to complete first.
Speaking of the shop, I will be busy the next few days moving in so I won't be replying to YouTube comments until sometime early in the week no matter how amusing they are. But I would like one question answered: What would you consider a "real" car?
Pretty sure Aaron's already proved to you what he's done, all the custom work and fabrication... and If your so high and mighty why don't you show us what you drive and what you have actually done to a car, if there's anything to show.
Strike #1 on your part: It's stored properly at a facility. I've used desiccant in the interior to dry it out, the engine is fogged and pickled, and the body has been oil coated to prevent rust. It's covered by a thick padded blanket with a waterproof tarp on top, and it sits on a sheet of plastic to prevent moisture from the floor. It would be rather rude to drop off a project car at my parent's house.
Strike #2 is that I've taken a thorough inventory of parts required and all work that needs to be done. I'm currently sourcing things like bumpers and trim. Most of the car is complete. I have the engine planned out and very soon the doner will be disassembled for rebuild and porting. I have the EMS system sitting in my basement ready to go. A colour scheme for the exterior and interior is chosen, and I've decided on wheels.
@bstnguy9 said "I predict you do nothing to this piece of sh#t other than park it in your mother's back yard and watch it rot.". Just a quick note to an old troll that I've started rebuilding this car. Make sure to check out my other videos to follow the progress of the project. I'm at part 5 already and will be posting part 6 (sandblasting the floor) as soon as I get time to edit it.
@aaroncake Boy, I really got to you didn't I? I just got done watching all 5 videos and now feel bad that I made fun of you. You really are able to dismantle an old piece of crap and place the pieces all over your garage just like every other young male out there. I didn't think you could do it. The sad part though is you're approaching 40 and should be out trying to get laid rather than crawling all over a 35 year old piece of junk that no one will appreciate when done. If it gets done!
@bstnguy9 Nah, you didn't get to me. I'm far too accomplished to be bothered about what random people say on YouTube. What I wanted was a little entertainment and I knew where to find a troll who would bite. Make sure to subscribe because part 6 is due out any day now and I'd like your wisdon on that video as well. Since when is slightly less then 31 approaching 40 though?
@bstnguy9 What a nice person you are ! This Aaron guy is trying to restore a gorgeous piece of motoring history, and all you do is criticise him? I wonder, if youve restored a car. I think, you should go back to the hell you come from and leave decent people alone.
@1973mazdarx4coupe Don't worry too much about guys like that. Think of "Comic Book Guy" from The Simpsons and suddenly they turn into nothing but entertainment. Then when you think about what kind of crappy life drives someone into trolling, pity is the next emotion you will feel.
@aaroncake Yeah, well, good luck with your restore. As for me, last weekend I took out the wiriing looms, dry iced 70% of the floor. My power window motors seized so i have to remove them, ill swap to wind up windows but im not sure if its just the regulator that has to be swapped in and power window motor taken out、or maybe new power window motors. next week removing windows and then engine, finally then a good stripping back and respray. im thinking a copper color, metallic silver?
@1973mazdarx4coupe I'd choose copper over metallic silver because nearly every car in the world is silver. But, why not something unique and classy like metallic black? I guess there aren't too many copper cars around though.
Most people never even heard of an RX-5, let alone seen one regardless of the condition. Hence the walkaround with the doors, boot and hood both opened and closed. Yes, of course the car is a bit rough. That's the point of a project car.
The engine is actually in fairly good shape, just dirty. But I'm going to install the 6 port from a GSL-SE with a smallish turbocharger. From what I've read about the Cosmo, it needs a lot more torque so an NA 13B just isn't going to cut it.
your videos are great. i love watching

Awesome car :D I really hope you make a build up thread for this car too. You know, just to take up more of your time lol.
kittyhax 3 years ago 2
I'm going to do a writeup, but I'm not sure if will be as detailed as my previous threads. Must of this will be restoration instead of fabrication so I don't know if it will be as interesting to the outsider. However you can be certain it will be documented properly. :-)
aaroncake 3 years ago
I don't understand why this idiot is making a big deal about removable parts. The important thing is it's a good shell. Perhaps a totaled car with all the appropriate accessories would have been a better candidate for a restore.
ScottFc3s 3 years ago 2
I just don't understand it. . . Why do some people just plain hate rotary engines? I mean, I hate corvair engines- but you don't see me looking up corvair videos to call them retards.
DavidHolmesIII 3 years ago 2
If someone hated Rotary engines so much why would they be looking at videos with cars they know have Rotary engines in them anyways. Other people sometimes.

Looks like someone installed an aftermarket sunroof which is now gone. That should be a fun repair. So of course you'll need to locate a headliner as well. That'll be easy. The grille, door handles, trim, glass, cowl, marker lights are all missing. The headlights are still there so you've got that going for you. Do you have to be a wanker to own a wankel?
bstnguy9 3 years ago
No but you need to have a wanker to own a wankel. So, that rules you out.
blackedoutFC3S 3 years ago 2

To all your pals....blow me!
bstnguy9 3 years ago
So far all you've managed to do is show us how incredibly retarded you are, but please keep going this is very amusing.
Plus, you still haven't even shown us anything you've ever done to a car or what you drive. Good one... douche

Oh sorry, I guess you've shown us all you can use Google and read.

85rx7crazydriver 3 years ago 2
I've owned several 1st gens and love them. Without a doubt they are a more pure sports car then the 2nd gen but that by no means says that the 2nd gen was a sad follow up. Indeed, it won Car Of The Year for what, 5 years or so? Clearly there is some similarity between it and the 944 but the RX-7 tested better then the 944 in every way with the exception of fuel mileage. The shape of the 2nd gen is clearly an evolution of the 1st gen, which would naturally lead to a 944 type shape.
aaroncake 3 years ago
The history of how the FC came about it's shape is well documented. Read the Yamaguchi book for the histroy so you can intelligently discuss the car in the future.
aaroncake 3 years ago
Now as for my 2nd gen, come on. To honestly sit there and say it's not a great car just shows something is really wrong with your viewpoint. Everytime I show the car it is roundly loved, though some don't agree with the colour scheme. And while it was an expensive project, no one but an immature kid dumps their entire income into a car project. Doing so is just stupid.

You have a donor car for this one?? Hmmm...I thought this might make a good donor for someone needing scrap metal. So you picked out the color and wheels, huh? Very impressive...you're almost there mate! Oh, I visited your page....I'm still chuckling. Time to grow up and get a real car sonny!
bstnguy9 3 years ago
LOL FAG. Have you seen Aaron's FC? I can guarantee you this car will be built properly and awesomely.
noob5000000 3 years ago 3
The engine doner is an '84 GSL-SE RX-7 that is a parts car of mine. The body is rather rotted but the rest is in good shape. I'll be building the 6 port engine with some minor porting work, NA lower intake, then a modified TII upper intake. A small turbo (GT3076) will provide a little bit of a boost as the stock 130HP on the Cosmo is a bit weak.
aaroncake 3 years ago
You act as if I've never built a car before, and in that sense you'd be dead wrong. Not only my own "Project Tina" which has been acclaimed all over the world and will be featured in a book, but many other smaller projects over the years. Oh, did I mention that tomorrow I'll be moving into a shop, with the Cosmo not far behind? I'm quite eager to begin working on it considering how straight the body is. Though I do have a few other projects to complete first.
aaroncake 3 years ago
Speaking of the shop, I will be busy the next few days moving in so I won't be replying to YouTube comments until sometime early in the week no matter how amusing they are. But I would like one question answered: What would you consider a "real" car?
aaroncake 3 years ago
Pretty sure Aaron's already proved to you what he's done, all the custom work and fabrication... and If your so high and mighty why don't you show us what you drive and what you have actually done to a car, if there's anything to show.

I predict you do nothing to this piece of sh#t other than park it in your mother's back yard and watch it rot. A fool and his money are soon parted!
bstnguy9 3 years ago
Strike #1 on your part: It's stored properly at a facility. I've used desiccant in the interior to dry it out, the engine is fogged and pickled, and the body has been oil coated to prevent rust. It's covered by a thick padded blanket with a waterproof tarp on top, and it sits on a sheet of plastic to prevent moisture from the floor. It would be rather rude to drop off a project car at my parent's house.
aaroncake 3 years ago
Strike #2 is that I've taken a thorough inventory of parts required and all work that needs to be done. I'm currently sourcing things like bumpers and trim. Most of the car is complete. I have the engine planned out and very soon the doner will be disassembled for rebuild and porting. I have the EMS system sitting in my basement ready to go. A colour scheme for the exterior and interior is chosen, and I've decided on wheels.
aaroncake 3 years ago
Strike #3: Search my name and "RX-7" on Google.
aaroncake 3 years ago
@bstnguy9 said "I predict you do nothing to this piece of sh#t other than park it in your mother's back yard and watch it rot.". Just a quick note to an old troll that I've started rebuilding this car. Make sure to check out my other videos to follow the progress of the project. I'm at part 5 already and will be posting part 6 (sandblasting the floor) as soon as I get time to edit it.
aaroncake 1 year ago
@aaroncake Boy, I really got to you didn't I? I just got done watching all 5 videos and now feel bad that I made fun of you. You really are able to dismantle an old piece of crap and place the pieces all over your garage just like every other young male out there. I didn't think you could do it. The sad part though is you're approaching 40 and should be out trying to get laid rather than crawling all over a 35 year old piece of junk that no one will appreciate when done. If it gets done!
bstnguy9 1 year ago
@bstnguy9 Nah, you didn't get to me. I'm far too accomplished to be bothered about what random people say on YouTube. What I wanted was a little entertainment and I knew where to find a troll who would bite. Make sure to subscribe because part 6 is due out any day now and I'd like your wisdon on that video as well. Since when is slightly less then 31 approaching 40 though?
aaroncake 1 year ago
@bstnguy9 What a nice person you are ! This Aaron guy is trying to restore a gorgeous piece of motoring history, and all you do is criticise him? I wonder, if youve restored a car. I think, you should go back to the hell you come from and leave decent people alone.
1973mazdarx4coupe 1 year ago
@1973mazdarx4coupe Don't worry too much about guys like that. Think of "Comic Book Guy" from The Simpsons and suddenly they turn into nothing but entertainment. Then when you think about what kind of crappy life drives someone into trolling, pity is the next emotion you will feel.
aaroncake 1 year ago
@aaroncake Yeah, well, good luck with your restore. As for me, last weekend I took out the wiriing looms, dry iced 70% of the floor. My power window motors seized so i have to remove them, ill swap to wind up windows but im not sure if its just the regulator that has to be swapped in and power window motor taken out、or maybe new power window motors. next week removing windows and then engine, finally then a good stripping back and respray. im thinking a copper color, metallic silver?
1973mazdarx4coupe 1 year ago
@1973mazdarx4coupe I'd choose copper over metallic silver because nearly every car in the world is silver. But, why not something unique and classy like metallic black? I guess there aren't too many copper cars around though.

you should put the miors up on the fenders to get the old import look. that things going to be sick as hell
loadedlover12 3 years ago
That's the plan. Since this car came without mirrors, I'll have to be ordering from overseas.
aaroncake 3 years ago
No need to do a 720 degree shot of the damn car, I think we can see it just fine. So far.... its a piece of crap!
3rdSuspension 3 years ago
Most people never even heard of an RX-5, let alone seen one regardless of the condition. Hence the walkaround with the doors, boot and hood both opened and closed. Yes, of course the car is a bit rough. That's the point of a project car.
aaroncake 3 years ago
Didn't mean it in such a bad way... but I always these cars on craigslist...
Anyways.. looks like crap but like you said, it's a project - good luck

Great to see some-one restoring an RX-5, they are probably the least popular out of the RX-
models, which makes them an interesting acquistion though.
Looks like the motor is very sad, but there are a lot of people doing rebuilds on that model rotary engine.
Big project, best of luck!!!
Regards from Ozz in Australia.
OzzInter 3 years ago
The engine is actually in fairly good shape, just dirty. But I'm going to install the 6 port from a GSL-SE with a smallish turbocharger. From what I've read about the Cosmo, it needs a lot more torque so an NA 13B just isn't going to cut it.
