I think we need to draw a distinction between "commercial" and "successful". Commercial has negative connotations to it. It implies that a band spends more time licking corporate ass than making good music. Also it implies that the band makes music to get rich rather than to change the world. In such a sense "commercial" is akin to "sellout".
dude you got no fucking idea of what youre talking about. commercial doesnt mean to earn alot of money. commercial means TO ACT commercial, to get this publicity to make your music more popular, that is being commercial. kurt still earns money because he was one of the most passionate musicians. and metallica, they got famous without TV, internet, radio...and zeppelin?? hahaha do your homework lil boy.
I like bands who make music they hope no one will ever hear. I mean why start a band if people are going to listen?? Most of the bands on this video were different from the mass of music being made at the time, but people liked it and they became the dominate music you hear on the radio now. Nevermind,Sgt Pepper,Led Zep 1,Master Of Pup were very distinct for the time they were made. Who looked and sounded like Elvis before Elvis?
what if they were comercial, whats so wrong on having a huge list of fans if they still play good music i dont get it plus they all kick ass. I cant belive you dont like zeppelin and nirvana O.o
The Beatles are perhaps the LEAST commercial band of all time. "Commercial" is not the right word for this list. I think the "highest selling artists" would be more appropriate, or maybe the "most defining." But many of these bands really aren't that commercial, especially Nirvana and the Beatles. AC/DC isn't all that commercial. You've got a great list, there. It's just labeled a bit wrong.
And as for the below comments, Zeppelin are gods. End of discussion.
many thanks to courtney love and major record labels, nirvana are still sickeningly commercial 15 years later. With The Lights Out is a disgrace!
Its low quality cassettes the kind of stuff which is bootlegged and lying around in a cardboard box for years and biodegrading and most of it is boombox/4-track recorded.
they ran outta money and stuff to release so they commmercialized some bootleg mp3s.
you know whats ironic?everytime i try to download a nirvana rarity, the file has been deleted
Everyone seems to have a different idea of what, "commercial" is, that is probably why so many people here disagree. Just being popular or on the radio does not automatically make a band commercial (I think). It's more of an over all attitude. Not to mention the obvious, actually being featured in commercials.
Even though Nirvana was well liked I would have to say they were the most commercial band of the early 1990s. I also don't believe they were as deep as they seemed to be and believe they were actually a recording industry creation to compete for the European "Alternative" sound that the USA was then trying to compete for. The US labels cranked out a ton of what they called Alterative / Grunge and closed out any European bands. I tend to think this band "although good" was rather fake/commercial.
How about that whole WoodStock come back thing in the 90s, over priced food, over priced bottles of water, anything you brought in was confiscated and we were foreced to buy their food and water at 100 times the price. We thought the 90s were all about rebelling against commercialism of the 1980s but what we didn't realize was that the 1990s were evern MORE commercial than the 80s ever were.
Kiss is by far the most commercial they're merchandise over-rides their music. I can't believe you called Nirvana commercial. Commercial doesn't necessarily mean that you sell a lot of records. It is more of an attitude, like the ones of the shitty hair metal bands. Nirvana made In Utero because they didn't want to be commercial, yet everyone still went out and bought that album. Nirvana is my favorite band and aic is second I don't understand y you cannot like nirvana because u like aic.
Linkin park is commercial blink182 is commercial alice in chains is commercial i dont know about led zeppelin metallica not to much the first albums where ok only st anger was shit anthrax isnt the beach boys is commercial G n G i have no idea motley crue? why?godsmack well yeah (i almost typed godsnack!) thats all im bored
so what?... would Dixon scream and entertain like Plant? make such a fantastic grooves like Jones/Bonham? or do aything that Jimmy "magician" Page did? Led Zep did inmortal and epic renditions to Dixon's songs so I think there is nothing to say about that.

I'm not offended, but I simply can't trust anybody that doesn't like LED ZEPPELIN, and try to talk about music...
