divinafan-Vickers and Maureen Forrester were easily the two best ever Canadian produced opera singers.Stratas was right up there not far behind. George London was at least on the same level.

His opera roles were all the same, his Grimes could have been Otello andFlorestan and so forth. They were all the damn same. Lean left then right, go up on your toes bring your right hand up and that is Mr. Vickers acting.
Vickers said in an interview that he performed Vasek because John Dexter asked him to. But the prospect of working with Stratas, one of his most simpatico colleagues, probably didn't hurt either:). I remember seeing this live back in 1978. I'd previously seen Vickers on PBS as Canio and Otello and heard his Peter Grimes, Radames, Jose and Florestan. And I was delighted with this great artist's ability to paint Vasek, as he said in that interview, "with a more delicate brush" --
wow I love Vickers voice it is amazing, and I Love it when I can actually understand what people are saying , how I hate it when I cant under stand english.
Remember...Vickers always considered himself as a singing actor. There was no character that he wouldn'do if he was vocally capable.Just listen to the masterful way he stutters through this, with perfect timing and tuning. One of his favourite roles that he didn't sing (as far as I know),was the witch in Hansel and Gretel-now that would have been a treat to hear and see...lol

I believe in most of Vickers intepretations, but in this role I find him "trying" too much...
But who cares. He was an amazing artist, with an enormous voice!

Stratas marvellous as usual.
As 26 May is her 70th birthday wouldn't it be nice for a DVD of this perfomance to be made available as a tribute to her artistry.

So out of character for Vickers. But sooo interesting. I wonder why he decided to sing this role?
