@strangeisfun you have to understand that life was incredibly different in 18th century america. birth control wasn't as readily available as it is now. in fact, in the early 1900s birth control was illegal. I can assure you Varina's pregnancies were most likely unplanned. I'm sure they also didn't expect their family to suffer so much tragedy.
This video is very touching, respectful and well produced. The three questions I have is, who created this, was it a family member or was this a project.I have a family member that was a well known confederate, maybe you've heard of him ; Robert E. Lee.
My personal favorite is that black maid in the background of the porch scene. Where is HER story??? What about HER kids that were probably sold off - for profit - to another plantation?
So the Jefferson's had major personal family drama - so what? Who DIDN'T in that particular space of time?
"I am not in favor of the social and political equality of the white and black races - not in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, qualifying them to hold office, intermarry with whites...is a physical difference between the white and black races which forever forbid the two living on terms of social and political equality. There must be the position of superior and inferior, and I assign the superior position to whites." .......... Abe Lincoln
@mnpd007 At what point in his political career did he say that? I can imagine it was before he became a president. Did he care about the Emancipation Proclamation? Was the Proclamation intended to free slaves?
Want to hold 19th Century people to 21st Century standards? Ok, I'll not object... so long as you hold ALL of them to that standard. "What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause."... Abe Lincoln.
The dates are mixed up on Joseph. The text claims he fell "just a few days before his fifth birthday" and died only a "few minutes" after his mother reached his side. His date of birth is given as 4/18/59, and his date of death as 4/30/64. He either died a few days AFTER his fifth birthday, or he lived for a couple weeks after the fall.
Wow people died of everything during the victorian times! so tragic! Its kinda weird, before the victorian times there was less medicine and care and people lived longer than they did during victorian era.
@AbneyParkFan Industrialization, the movement of peoples and their diseases with them came at great cost. Please look at the portrait of the couple at the beginning of the film. Far from devotion, her face registers misery and resignation. It's a pity people must project their own good fortune at being free to makes choices in life onto the people (especially women) of earlier times. She had no choice but devotion.
@AbneyParkFan Yes and today left wing brainwashed idiots want to make society devolve into a time earlier than this era where people lived to 35 if they were lucky. We must strive to maintain our society and move it forward. Humanity comes first not last.
@AbneyParkFan The Government is not the society I agree our Government has run it's course but medical advancement is not dependent on Government. Companies strive to make better and better medications and treatment because of demand.

@suckmycod: Do you even think in your romantic white wash of what the Confederacy was? How was Grant supposed to own any slaves when he lived in the Norh? Do you imagine he owned vast estates in many state? He was in poverty b/4 the war! He declared bankruptcy!
As for Lee, he never freed any slaves. He was the executor of his father-in-law's estate, which included slaves. The will of his father-in-law specified the slaves be freed, in 5yrs. Lee fought this will to the Vir. Supreme Courth.
@VictorLepanto Learn something! It's all there if you remove the PC blinders. Grant was married to a Kentucky woman and the couple owned slaves. Throughout the War Grant used his personal slave to drive his carriage. Lee, who surrendered to Grant, owned zero slaves, never did and never would. A rather odd ending for a war fought to "end slavery" wouldn't you say? Read what the people of both sides said about the War... not the revisionist crap of modern "historians."
Another victim of historical revisionism. The idea that the War was fought for slaves was inserted into history AFTER the War. Read the writings of those who lived during the War. The U.S. repeatedly stated the War had nothing to do with slavery, otherwise the Union Army would have deserted. How great for the South if it had; it would have won its freedom because there would be no U.S. soldiers in the field to oppose it. They would no more fight for slaves than the South.
Maybe I should point out the innocent nonslave owning men, women and children murdered by Union troops including ones led by Sherman, the murdered surrendering Confederate troops or the Confederate POWs that were tortured and starved. Not all Southerners were slave owning.
@TheShieldfaith: This nonsense. Jackson might have wanted to end slavery, for his own strange reasons, but Lee owned made a good bit of money off of slaves. He tried to break his father-in-law's will to keep the slaves from that estate. He ultimately failed to free them under the terms of that will. The supreme court of Virginia literally forced Lee to free the slaves in question.
Let me tell you all something, there were CSA generals and the like that opposed slavery. Lincoln was never full against slavery. In fact, Frederick Douglas had to do some pushing on him. The Emancipation Proclamation only freed the slaves in the north. Now before some of you all get haughty, yes, I am a Southerner. However I am not racist nor do I support slavery. I will point out that should weigh on you, a few years ago it was found that Southerners know more about that war than the North
@TheShieldfaith What you say is true. I am a New Englander and it is ridiculous that all we were taught in school was that the Union won and the Confederate states were some sort of evil empire. It's nonsense.

". So before you continue making ignorant comments like that do some real fact finding.
Jefferson Davis was a Confederate pig. I wonder how many slave children died because of him and others like him. I wonder how many of those slave children were his own?
I'd rather here about the children slaves he "owned." What ever became of his slaves? The condescending benevolence he is alleged to have shown to his slaves is romantic twaddle. I believe he calls his slave children "pickaninnies."

Shelby Foote was an idiot when it came to Davis. He said Davis could not possibly be a monster -- because he was so kind to his children.
That's proof? First of all, many murderers are nice to their children. Hitler was real sweet to kids --if he wasn't gassing them to death or stuffing them on trains to die.
Show the black children Davis had by raping his slave women - some not even yet teenagers.
Show the quotes of Davis saying Slavery is a gift of God -- that God delivered the Negro to " our hands" -- apparently for fucking, whipping, and selling.
Luckily -- Lincoln not only beat lunatics like Davis - he kicked your Southern insane God in the ass too. Notice your God isn't giving you slaves to rape anymore.
~NeilTaxCon~, And what exactly do you think that a number of ~Federal soldiers~were doing to black women as they pillaged and plundered during Sherman's March? There are many accounts of the RAPES of black women by your holier than thou Yankee soldiers! and while I don't doubt that certain slave owners may have had their way with ~slave women~, cause there are good and bad on both sides, the fact remains that Davis and Lee were not among those vile statistics ...
Davis and Lee were probably the horniest slave rapers around. Forget this made up crap about honorable men -- they evil mean fucks who whipped women, sold children, had men burned to death how fought against slavery.
By the way idiot, Shelby Foote said the that there were NO credible reports of any rapes by Sherman's men during the March to kick Southern ass. You fucks have made that whole thing up.
Oh there were rapes - which the North prosecuted -- but not then.
~12FlyMe~, while I have great respect for Shelby Foote, just cause YOU CLAIM that he said that there were NO credible reports of the rapes committed by Yankee soldiers doesn't make it so! You know damn well the Yankees raped their way through the South!
Quote by Shelby Foote's own book " "Sherman marched 60,000 men slap across Georgia, straight up .... burning looting, doing everything in the world -- but I don't know of a single case of rape. That's amazing because hatred run higher in civil wars"
Magic I gave you the SOURCE. In fact, I can give you the SOURCE for Lee selling children - frequently. Lee screaming at women WHILE they were whipped. Davis claiming slavery was the cornersstone of the confederacy.
You lunatics have spewed this utter nonsense about an honorable south for 150 years. You were very Nazi like, totalitarian, evil. Far far worse than America has been led to believe.
@SteamboatCamp: You need to be fair in your claims. There is only one varifiable account of Lee having a woman whipped. He did scream @ the sheriff's deputy he hired to do the whipping to "lay it on hard." As for selling children @ all, much less frequently? He had very few slaves of his own as his father went bankrupt & his childhood was spent in poverty. He only CONTROLLED certain slaves from his father-in-law's estate. Thus he had no right to sell any of them.
@magictricks3: Sherman is a doubtful source as in his position he had a strong motive to cover up misconduct by his men. Still, Sherman was not generally bashful about shocking behavior by his men. It is my understanding that camp followers (as they were called) were plentiful enough to relieve any lust, & the aleinness of Southerners was not great enough to make rape seem tolerable to the troops. Most historian say rape rates wee low. You offer evidence to the contrary.
Magic -- I would assume black women were raped -- the biggest activity in the South from 1800 - 1860, by most "gentleman" was buying, raping, and selling black women. Lee himself kept a "hunting list" in his account books, in his OWN handwriting, of which escaped slave women he wanted back most. He paid very good money if the bounty hunter brought him certain women.
@branman864 And you're a cock-obsessed stalker who's too fucking stupid to spell "bigot" correctly and too fucking lazy to look it up in a dictionary. What a moron!!!
Im not an expert, I just know what he did -- and what his wife said about him, what hi generals said about him -- and what he said about himself.
Got that dumb fuck? His wife said he was a coward, Beauregard said he was a liar and a coward, and Davis said God delivered the black race to his hands for enslavement.
Got that retard? Learning the truth about Davis is like smelling shit.
CLT -- what info? About davis quotes? His books and speeches. About desertions? Davis said this in Sept 64. About Davis running away in a dress? His wife's letter to Blairs
, "It [slavery] was established by decree of Almighty God
Davis' defenses of slavery are legion, as in his speech to Congress in 1848, .... It is a common law right to property in the service of man; its origin was Divine decree."
After 1856, Davis said "African slavery is a moral, a social, and a political blessing "We recognize the negro as God tell us to - our inferior, fitted expressly for servitude"
Clc -- Hitler is seen by many as heroic. Dumb fuck, evil haters have always been seen by many as honorable -- IF that got the person status.
Notice the only fucking lunatics who "honor" Davis want to fit in to the Confderate fringe, to impress the women or the gay guys, whatever.
Anyone who really knows what Davis did and said would know he was a lunatic, or an evil fuck, or both. Plus, that he was a coward who ran away in a dress hiding behind his wife.
Davis said what he considered "liberty" Davis said the South measured it's liberty by the freedom to enslave the black race.
That was liberty to Davis -- enslaving blacks.
He was fucking insane lunatic. He said God gave the negro to the white man to enslave, that negroes had great affection for their master, that the evil one were those "serpents" from the north who "whispered the lie of freedom" to the slave.
~SFS~, Davis also said ~The slave must be made fit for his freedom by education and discipline, and thus made unfit for slavery~. Say what you will, but Jefferson Davis was, is, and always will be thought of as an honorable man by many.
Yes you folks MUST see Davis and Lee as heroic, for your own self esteem.
Davis was dishonorable -- a coward who deserted his own people in time of need, wearing a dress no less. In fact, the moment they caught him, he was running away from his own familiy.
He was a slaver, a coward who you have had to try to display him as a saint.
But the facts show he was just a well spoken coward, who gladly enslaved others and said God told him to do it..
dumb fuck -- HItler will be seen as honorable by many.
No one who knows what Davis did thinks he was honorable. Even his own wife grew to hate him, and despise the Confederacy. His own wife wrote that he wore a dress and ran from Richmond, leaving his people with no leader, and took all the gold he could find.
The real story of Davis shows what fucking insane evil fucks the Confederates were.
Magic -- I know a lot about Davis since I have read most of his books, and speeches, and his wife's letters about him.
I also know what he did, according to people like his wife, the generals in the CSA, and the editor of the Richmond paper.
Lee's own words about God giving the black race to white men, should be enough to show you he is fucking nuts or extremely evil, using God and religion to justify anything he wanted.
You aint paid the price yet. LIncoln said slavery was a cancer , and he was right.
Slavery could exist because people stuck their heads in the sand and said God wanted it, the slaves were treated well, and other assorted insane nonsense.
The last thing the slavers wanted was the truth -- God didnt ordain slavery, slaves were whipped, raped, sold, terrorized, and killed.
The truth is the antidote for evil -- the truth will set you free, Jesus knew.
Magic -- of course not. Like a child believes in santa clause.
You're ego invested in the myth, if you were born in Mecca you would adore Osama. The truth doesnt matter to weak souls - only belonging.
But the fact is Davis was an eloquant, well spoken, Nazi like slaver. He got rich on slaves, whipped slaves, bought and sold children, and said God gave blacks to whites to enslave.
I just looked up postings on line and you have a lot of hate in you. What was it that made you so?..... You say that you jerk off to porn, your keep talking about tax and Ron Paul and you use words like retards.
With the amount of time you spend online and the comments you make you are a really odd guy with few if any friends and no compassion. Ist our failure as a society that we cant find you and you spew your filth out to good people. You really do need help, but you seem beyond help.
its many years ago now, all have had their own sunset. For all his actions he tried hard and did his best and this is more of a memorial. People are saying mean spirited things here, God will remember. For those of good will, you will do well. We will al meet our maker in our own time. The death of children is not something I would joke about. Only those cynical and poor souls to whom life means nothing would post hurtfull thoughts. God Bless the innocents. God knows who to punish.
Davis said slavery was a DIvine blessing -- got that dumb fuck? Davis said God gave the negro to the white man, and that the black man was only fit for "servitude" and it was God's will that whites enslave them.
That mean selling the black children -- it meant raping the slaves, sell your OWN children from the rapes. It mean whipping those who resisted, and burning to death those who fought back.,
Slave rape was very common, according to every slave autobiography. In fact, slave rape was legal and profitable -- selling mixed race slaves was the big money maker, especially 2nd and 3rd generation mulatto girls, who brought a very good price.
So very likely Davis sold many of his own children, into slavery, as did most slave owners.
wasn't varina his second wife? he was married to zachary taylor's daughter i think. she died very soon after their wedding. i can't imagine living then, when you couldn't count on all of your children living to adulthood. i would have gone crazy with grief. maybe they expected it in some way, or maybe they just had more faith than we do now. i just know i wouldn't have been able to stand it.
Yes, Varina was his second wife. I remember reading that in the past many women prepared for their deaths when they became pregnant, cause the risk was high that they would die during childbirth or soon after the baby was born.
oh i know, i just don't think i could have survived losing most of my children. look at the lincolns, they had five children(maybe six-i've heard about a daughter who also died young, but havent' found any other citings of her), and only one lived to adulthood. it is just interesting what the two families had in common.
I didn't actually forget ~Jim~. I should have at least mentioned him in the vid. The story of how ~Jim~ became a part of the Davis family is an interesting one. Also shows the good character of Jefferson & Varina to take the little boy in, and treat him as one of the family.
awsome tribute, people today should take note well done,

Show the black children Davis had by raping his slave women - some not even yet teenagers.
Show the quotes of Davis saying Slavery is a gift of God -- that God delivered the Negro to " our hands" -- apparently for fucking, whipping, and selling.
Luckily -- Lincoln not only beat lunatics like Davis - he kicked your Southern insane God in the ass too. Notice your God isn't giving you slaves to rape anymore.
Must piss you off at church.

~NeilTaxCon~, you have a dirty mind! Stop assuming that Jefferson Davis did anything that vile! He was an honorable man who loved his wife.
magictricks3 1 year ago
Magic-- what do you think the slave owners did to naked young women in their barn?
Where do you think the 1.4 million mulattoes came from? 4 million slaves, 1.4 million of them mulattoes.
Believe me - there was a whole lot of raping going on. Read the diaries of the slave women.
NeilTaxCon 1 year ago
~NeilTaxCon~, And what exactly do you think that a number of ~Federal soldiers~were doing to black women as they pillaged and plundered during Sherman's March? There are many accounts of the RAPES of black women by your holier than thou Yankee soldiers! and while I don't doubt that certain slave owners may have had their way with ~slave women~, cause there are good and bad on both sides, the fact remains that Davis and Lee were not among those vile statistics ...
magictricks3 1 year ago
Davis and Lee were probably the horniest slave rapers around. Forget this made up crap about honorable men -- they evil mean fucks who whipped women, sold children, had men burned to death how fought against slavery.
By the way idiot, Shelby Foote said the that there were NO credible reports of any rapes by Sherman's men during the March to kick Southern ass. You fucks have made that whole thing up.
Oh there were rapes - which the North prosecuted -- but not then.
12FlyMe 1 year ago
~12FlyMe~, while I have great respect for Shelby Foote, just cause YOU CLAIM that he said that there were NO credible reports of the rapes committed by Yankee soldiers doesn't make it so! You know damn well the Yankees raped their way through the South!
magictricks3 1 year ago
@magictricks3 Sorry dumb fuck - check out his own book. Conversations with Shelby Foote By Shelby Foote -- page 110, idiot.
Ive heard him say the same thing in interviews. Go look up his own book. Its even online, Google Books.
12FlyMe 1 year ago
Quote by Shelby Foote's own book " "Sherman marched 60,000 men slap across Georgia, straight up .... burning looting, doing everything in the world -- but I don't know of a single case of rape. That's amazing because hatred run higher in civil wars"

~12FlyMe~, Shelby doesn't know everything! BTW, in this case ... HE IS WRONG!

SteamboatCamp 1 year ago
@SteamboatCamp: You need to be fair in your claims. There is only one varifiable account of Lee having a woman whipped. He did scream @ the sheriff's deputy he hired to do the whipping to "lay it on hard." As for selling children @ all, much less frequently? He had very few slaves of his own as his father went bankrupt & his childhood was spent in poverty. He only CONTROLLED certain slaves from his father-in-law's estate. Thus he had no right to sell any of them.
VictorLepanto 1 year ago

Gee -- I wonder why?

What makes me an expert on Davis?
Im not an expert, I just know what he did -- and what his wife said about him, what hi generals said about him -- and what he said about himself.
Got that dumb fuck? His wife said he was a coward, Beauregard said he was a liar and a coward, and Davis said God delivered the black race to his hands for enslavement.
Got that retard? Learning the truth about Davis is like smelling shit.

~BullshipDetector~, why not replace the name ~Davis~ with the name ~Lincoln~ in your last statement, then it would be more accurate ...
magictricks3 2 years ago
Magic DF, sorry idiot, Davis was the one who said the South judged their "liberty" by the freedom to own slaves.
Not Lincoln. Davis said God delivered the Negro "into our hands" to be enslaved, dumb fuck.
Davis was the one who ran away in a dress taking Confederate gold, dumb fuck.
BullshipDetector 2 years ago
CLT -- what info? About davis quotes? His books and speeches. About desertions? Davis said this in Sept 64. About Davis running away in a dress? His wife's letter to Blairs
Who the fuck is Delilah?

, "It [slavery] was established by decree of Almighty God
Davis' defenses of slavery are legion, as in his speech to Congress in 1848, .... It is a common law right to property in the service of man; its origin was Divine decree."
After 1856, Davis said "African slavery is a moral, a social, and a political blessing "We recognize the negro as God tell us to - our inferior, fitted expressly for servitude"
TubeTaxPro 2 years ago
Oh now clt wants to get tuff. Funny man.
Get tuff like Davis? Run away in a dress? Get tuff like 3/4 of the Confederate soldiers -- desert?
Or get tuff like the slave rapes? Maybe tuff like those who would whip women and children who could not fight back.
Funny how you pussies ran in battle, but were so "tuff" to women in chains before. Then you sure talked tuff later.
But like your own leader, Davis, you ran like pussies.

TubeTaxPro 2 years ago
@cltcwarlord3
He was fucking insane, and a coward,
BullshipDetector 2 years ago
CLT dumb fuck -- I dont care what Jackson or Sharpton do dumb fuck. I'm teaching your dumb fucking ass what the Southern slave rapers did and said.
Dumb fuck -- the evil DNA that is in any blacks today, probably came from the slave OWNERS -- like Davis and Lee.

Misquoting Davis my ass dumb fuck.
Davis said -- exactlyl this "Slavery is a Divine Blessing:. He also said this dumb fuck "God has delivered the negro to our hands" Got that dumb fuck.
He also said "The negro is only fit for servitude"
Got that dumb fuck.
SouthernFriedHoney 2 years ago
~SFS~, Davis also said ~The slave must be made fit for his freedom by education and discipline, and thus made unfit for slavery~. Say what you will, but Jefferson Davis was, is, and always will be thought of as an honorable man by many.
magictricks3 2 years ago
Yes you folks MUST see Davis and Lee as heroic, for your own self esteem.
Davis was dishonorable -- a coward who deserted his own people in time of need, wearing a dress no less. In fact, the moment they caught him, he was running away from his own familiy.
He was a slaver, a coward who you have had to try to display him as a saint.
But the facts show he was just a well spoken coward, who gladly enslaved others and said God told him to do it..
SouthernFriedHoney 2 years ago
@magictricks3
dumb fuck -- HItler will be seen as honorable by many.
BullshipDetector 2 years ago
~BullshipDetector~, what exactly makes you think that you are the authority on every little detail concerning Davis and his wife?
magictricks3 2 years ago
Magic -- I know a lot about Davis since I have read most of his books, and speeches, and his wife's letters about him.
I also know what he did, according to people like his wife, the generals in the CSA, and the editor of the Richmond paper.
Lee's own words about God giving the black race to white men, should be enough to show you he is fucking nuts or extremely evil, using God and religion to justify anything he wanted.
TubeTaxPro 2 years ago
Cltwarlord -- yes, if Farrakan is pro slavery, then he is just like the Confederate. Got that?
Slavery was FROM GOD said Jeff Davis and Robert E Lee -- got that retard? From GOD.

Whats your logic here dumb fuck? So your logic is -- if some black guy did something illegal, then you fucks should build a nation on that activity>
Well dumb fuck -- then go start a nation based on torturing pregnant women -- cause some black guy probably did that too.
Dumb fuck.

Clc -- truth is a good hobby.
NeilTaxCon 2 years ago
Magic -- of course not. Like a child believes in santa clause.
You're ego invested in the myth, if you were born in Mecca you would adore Osama. The truth doesnt matter to weak souls - only belonging.
But the fact is Davis was an eloquant, well spoken, Nazi like slaver. He got rich on slaves, whipped slaves, bought and sold children, and said God gave blacks to whites to enslave.
He also ran away in a dress

its many years ago now, all have had their own sunset.

Where are Davis' children from raping slaves?
Slave rape was very common, according to every slave autobiography. In fact, slave rape was legal and profitable -- selling mixed race slaves was the big money maker, especially 2nd and 3rd generation mulatto girls, who brought a very good price.
So very likely Davis sold many of his own children, into slavery, as did most slave owners.

wasn't varina his second wife? he was married to zachary taylor's daughter i think. she died very soon after their wedding. i can't imagine living then, when you couldn't count on all of your children living to adulthood. i would have gone crazy with grief. maybe they expected it in some way, or maybe they just had more faith than we do now. i just know i wouldn't have been able to stand it.
tranurse 2 years ago
Yes, Varina was his second wife. I remember reading that in the past many women prepared for their deaths when they became pregnant, cause the risk was high that they would die during childbirth or soon after the baby was born.

Death of young people were common in those days.

oh i know, i just don't think i could have survived losing most of my children. look at the lincolns, they had five children(maybe six-i've heard about a daughter who also died young, but havent' found any other citings of her), and only one lived to adulthood. it is just interesting what the two families had in common.

I didn't actually forget ~Jim~. I should have at least mentioned him in the vid. The story of how ~Jim~ became a part of the Davis family is an interesting one. Also shows the good character of Jefferson & Varina to take the little boy in, and treat him as one of the family.
