They call it japanese kung fu in the movie too. Kung fu is just a word for martial arts in chinese. Kung fu isn't a style. Wing Chun and kyokushin karate are styles. Technically, @DespairIIIX is right so don't pick on him when you have your facts wrong.
@darroni123 Depends on what you mean by Kung Fu. Over in the west it is used as the name of all Chinese martial arts, so by this definition there is no such thing as Japanese Kung Fu. However, in Chinese it actually means "human achievement" and is used to refer to any skill or accomplishment acquired by long hours of practice, not necessarily fighting. So by this definition, he is doing Japanese fighting Kung Fu.
wing chun was created by a woman by the name of wing chun. She used it against a war lord who was forcing her to marry him. She made a deal with him, if she could beat him in a fight, then she wins her freedom. he accepted and she beat him with ease. Since then it has become one of the highest rated self defense martial arts. especially for women.
@weberky If I'm not mistaken I believe the martial art was actually created by a woman named ng mui or something like that and taught to the girl named something wing chun where it got its name.
why didnt the officer shoot the wing chun fighter b4 he killed the karate fighter . isnt he supposed to be a japanese ? what the fuck was he fucking thinking ?
@555hansy he didn't kill him you moron, and even if he did which he didn't, it was death through a fight not an execution, he didn't hold him then finish him with one blow thus allowing japs to shoot him

@xCeLExperience no you were right the first time, it shotokan. check out his wide stance when he's in zenkutsu dachi. kyokushin doesnt really make wide stances like that in combat
@fuckusa, actually there is an account of Yip Man getting in a fight with two Jap policemen. i think that little thing spawned this movie. as a student of Ving Tsun, id say Donnie Yen did a good job considering hes a wushu master
What a crock of shit, this fight never happened, ip man never fought any japanese, he escaped to hong kong when japan invaded china. This movie was made to make the japanese look bad and to make karate look pathetic. Of course this movie being chinese propaganda to promote wing chun.
@FuckUSAEmpire its a movie, you dont need to make it sound all political. I guess with a name like yours, ppl from Uzbekistan are pretty simple minded
Ip Man is recorded as having defeated 10 men all at once. It was during a training demonstration when he was a policeman and there were no major injuries. I understand you're frustrations however Hagiography has long been associated with most every Asiatic nations for all of recorded history, and Japan is no better about it; read the history of the Sengoku period and you'll see what I mean. Yeah, as you said, this movie is shit and it "MAKES THE JAPANESE LOOK BAD" when they got beat by Ip Man. I guess the "LOOK BAD" thing doesn't apply to "WHEN JAPAN INVADED CHINA." Apparently movies are more important than an invasion of multiple countries, as the Japanese did for decades. Oh yeah, those quotes are from you.

@TheShotokankarateguy are you kidding me yip man taught bruce lee yip man woould not have got beat because while the karate guy woulve been kicking yip man would've been breaking bones or hitting vital points in the body i think gung fu beats karate because of all the kicking you do in karate is sometimes un necessary gung fu gung fu focusing on getting fight over quickly and effectively and plus in gung fu sparring they dont wear any padding thats how i like it no pads i hate wearing pads
@diego218556 karate uses more punches than kicking you must have karate cnfused with tae kwon do , karate is limited on the kicks and focus more on open hand techniques and punches
@TheShotokankarateguy so you think karate of kung fu is better ? you think that guy mas oyama could beat yip man how do you figure that ? yip man is one of th best masters EVER he is in the top three and karate came from kung fu not trying to be disrespcectful but i think yip man would win cause his wing chun skills are unprecidented and no one every beat him
@diego218556 mas oyama is the creator of the kyokushin kai style karate , go watch fighter in the wind its based on mas oyama's life and how he defeated every single Japanese karate school including my own school which is JKA ( Japan karate association) my style is shotokan , and mas oyama would slaughter yip man , coz wing chun is all bout speed no power in wing chun , kyokushin kai all power and power kills speed , go search videos of fighter in the wind and you will see the how it is
@ThatKiddAzn wing chun is based on blocks and attacks , and wing chun is about speed and ending a fight fast , it takes like 50 wing chun punches just to finish off an opponent , it only takes 2 karate punches to finish off an opponent , coz the first punch delivered is speed and the secound punch is power , in karate even the blocks are strikes so when a karate person blocks you he's also hitting his opponent at the same time , wing chun is a good martial art but it focus more on speed
@maimeu The equation for power that I used is the equation that is mainly used in the context of what I'm responding to; which I was responding with saying that Speed is a function of power and in order to have power, you need speed.
Why the hell does it matter that Karate came from Kung Fu? Origin means shit.
With that logic karate would be better than Kung Fu because it evolved. Much like Judo came from Japanese jujitsu and became a much better art.
You can't deny any master's skills. They were both good in their own ways. If anything Oyama trained more hardcore than Yip Man to be completely honest. Compare their training.
1:29 is the first time in the whole movie that Ip man was ever hit in a fight (the time where the soldier suck punched him doesn't count.)
On an unrelated note does anyone else feel bad for that General? I always thought he was the 2nd biggest badass in the movie. All he wanted was a fair fight with difficult opponents...
When movies, books, T.V. shows, and other such nonsense states that one art is better than another; it is simply propaganda usually used to attract viewers to that style, leading them to believe that they are being taught the "Better Art". You all need to open your eyes...
@masterdaral I did karate several years and never broke any wood. My sensei told us the same"wood does not hit me so why should I ?" just watch karatekid the old once,.. they transport the meaning of karate for me best.
bunkai23 Warner Home Video "FIGHTING BLACK KINGS"
Is the real film of the 1975 1st International Karate Tournament held in the Tokyo's Metropolitan Gymnasium. 36 countries sent their teams there. A team from Hong Kong also went and all of them lost their first fight to the Kyokushin fighters. You can see a clip here on youtube: KYOKUSHIN VS WING CHUN.
@muramasa187 haha I really enjoyed this one. But not all chinese choose greasy food. just like not all americans spend most of their day eating fast food.
@6Mah6raja6 UFC champs with black belts in karate: Lyoto Machida, Chuck Liddell, George Saint Pierre, Frank Mir. UFC champs with WC background: can't think of one.
@mmtxaz dude, you obviously never heard of Shawn Obasi. He maybe not a champ, but he beats lots of mma / bjj guys. Try search on youtube or check out his channel 'sealthedealobasi'.
@wmajinvegeta I think it's just different. if your good in some martial arts than it doesn't matter in which, cause most of them are based on logic thinkinand good reaction. I trained karate, taekwondo and jeet kun do,.. they are all very effectiv I think. so is wing tsun,... but you have to train it. This karate fighter in the movie is very realistic but ip man must win this fight because the fil is called IP MAN and not "bad karate soldier from japan" ^^ just a movie,..
This one thing that not many people seems to understand.
I do not talk about abilities and skills, but about the feelings and they way a martial art is used.
Martial art is not a simple fight style. Is a phylosophy, a lifestile, an art, that do not comprend only fighting and maditation, but also all the kind of art that a man can like, just as paint, draw, write.
The fight style, is just a way to exprime yourself
I've been practicing WTK or WCK for several years . Let me tell al of ya the basic idea of these 2 martial arts . Karate uses brute force , few powerfull blows to knock an adverary down . WTK principle says to conduct this force and use it against your oponent , uses liman kuen ( very fast chain of punch ) . Conclusion : Power vs Speed . The best martial artis is based on the one who uses it . In my opinion WTK is the best style .
Nah man Karate is only one move at a time while wing chun attacks are blocks and attacks at the same time i should kno since I've been learning it for like 3 months.
@mmtxaz it doesn't matter how long he has trained or whether or not he is a noob or an expert. He is a practitioner and he knows what he's practicing. Don't be such an asshole
@SunWukong4 lol. I guess anyone with some form of intelligence know that it all depends on the fighter. If the fighter is superior, he wins. If he is inferior, he loses. Simple. What differentiates two soccer players? Their team?
can anyone tell me if there's ever been a movie where a Karateka would beat a Kung Fu practitioner? I mean come on, I've been practising Karate for over 17 years, and that"s always the same thing man! Kung Fu wins over Karate! just coz that's a Chinese movie.
I love Wing Chun!! really, even though i gotta Shotokan background. But still, Karate is as efficient as any other martial art, but doesn"t have the same stances and moves as Kung Fu. That's it!!
You are right. Both karate and wing chun (or any other form of kung-fu) are strong. it all depends on pracitioner. Wing chun does not fight againsta Karate. People fight against other people.
There is an old semi-biographic movie about Mas Oyama, who won over one hundred fights against all other eastern martial artist of his time. Not because karate is better than others, but he trained 18 hours a day in frozen moiuntains...
By the way, the Karate master in this movie is not a Martial art specialist at all. He is just an actor, and trained Karate just couple of months, especially for this movie, while Donie Yen is indeed a good kung-fu master (not wing-chun)
@bunkai23 the problem of karate is that you have too many "empty" movements...you waste time doing tons of movements....and you do only one thing at a time...whereas wing tsun is attacking AND defending in ONE step. Karate is more like a sport....wt is the art of defending your self as effectively as possible...it's like comparing a formula1 car with a tank...the car is superior in a race...but the tank wins a battle...
@bunkai23 I think Wing Chun's theory and practice of working in close is its strength given that we have a visual perception lag that can be bypassed when in actual close contact.
Kinda like golf. Big drivers don't win tournaments, it's the short game and the putting that does.
Any kata that can use an enemy's attack to his own disadvantage is a winning kata. Aikido, WT falls into this category (katagory?)
@bunkai23 I learned karate for 3,5 years. shotokan. I totally agree with your opinion! And if you fiond any movie where karate wins a fight, tell me ^^
but this movie scene is fair to the karate-do, because this is just a good karateka and the oponent is the biggest wung tsun fighter ever ^^ and sometimes it's very close ;-) so I think karate is not so bad displayed in this scene.
@bunkai23 no no ^^ you also never see a a Boxer wins a fight against some eastern fighter ^^ and it's effectiv as hell, because you just train one punch for knock out.
and you never see a Samurai win against an kung fu swordsman, too.
AH never mind,. in my opinion shotokan is very very effectiv. it just look a little bit more boring comparing it with kungfu and stuff. :-) it's just because the focus is on effectivity. SO be proud.^^
Earlier in this movie the General (the guy fighting Ipman) fought with 3 Kung Fu fighters and won. Killing Crazy Lee which caused the series of events that led up to this point. But I digress there are movies out there that show great ass kickings featuring Karate.
@bunkai23 there is no best martial arts form it's all depends on the fighter itself. In this case ip man did beat the karate guy. It's a fact. the movie is based on true stories. And beside in this movie, karate wasn't that bad was it?
@bunkai23 osu hello fellow karate brother I train in the shotokan system also and I agree with you , there's too many kung fu movies where some kung fu guy beats up a karate brother like its too easy and it fools many non martial artist to think that kung fu is superior , I personally think its the chinese government behind it makin kung fu win over karate in films , its offensive to the art of karate and there should be films where karate beats kung fu
@TheShotokankarateguy I totally agree with you! Shotokan's always being kicked out of every thing. If some guy has to be beaten up , he's always practising shotokan. All this shit started with Bruce Lee movies. I love Bruce Lee, but then Jet Li did it, Jackie Chan...and so on.. I wish some Japonese movies were made where Kung fu would (for the 1st time ever) be kicked out.
I wish Sensei Taji Kase were still alive and be in a movie.lol they'd see if Karate's not effficent..
@bunkai23 I wished sensei nakayama made some movies but sensei naka tatsuya in kuro-obi made a movie in 2009 called high kick girl , in that movie karate kicked some ass and sensei tatsuya is JKA so its shotokan , the girl in high kick girl did shorin ryu
well why the fuck do you think that is knob jockey? China isnt going to make all their films about a foreign style beating a Chinese style....
Also because Wing Chun is obviously a better fighting system. Someone who knew nothing about martial arts could just look at their stances and tell which one was more practical.
WC uses less energy, delivers more power and doesn't require much physical conditioning. Im not saying every WC practitioner will win against karate... that depends on the individual. but its a better system to learn for the average person.
if fighting systems had never been developed and you saw two people ready to fight in the stances shown here, which do you think looks like a smarter more effective way to prepare? having your arms up to guard your face? or having them cocked at your sides?
Oh ok, my mistake. Is the cocked arm just for katas?
Well Wing Chun uses the entire body to generate power, like the 1 inch punch. Its not just moving your arm forward, the power comes from subtle but powerful body movement.
@mmtxaz Watch a karateka beat up a wooden dummy, then feel pain all over. Watch an 80 year old man practice on a wooden dummy and broke it - just with a simple raise of a hand. Does karate teach you how to fight wing chun techniques? In wing chun, practitioners are trained to handle many types strikes. Can a karateka still defend himself when his arms are pinned?
@mmtxaz I do practice wing chun, but i'm still a great fan of enshin karate. If i were to be a master in enshin, i will hesitate to fighting a master in wing chun.
this is not karaté.

Power = Speed x Force.
There would has to be some kind/any of power generated because power is the eventual outcome of the speed function.

@TheShotokankarateguy Yes, I am. I've studied for almost half of my life in several different martial arts; mainly Korean and Japanese styles.

This karate fighter in the movie is very realistic but ip man must win this fight because the fil is called IP MAN and not "bad karate soldier from japan" ^^ just a movie,..
daikirainayume 1 year ago
@wmajinvegeta
Is not the martial art, is the artist.

In my opinion WTK is the best style .

can anyone tell me if there's ever been a movie where a Karateka would beat a Kung Fu practitioner? I mean come on, I've been practising Karate for over 17 years, and that"s always the same thing man! Kung Fu wins over Karate! just coz that's a Chinese movie.
I love Wing Chun!! really, even though i gotta Shotokan background. But still, Karate is as efficient as any other martial art, but doesn"t have the same stances and moves as Kung Fu. That's it!!
bunkai23 2 years ago 15
@bunkai23
You are right. Both karate and wing chun (or any other form of kung-fu) are strong. it all depends on pracitioner. Wing chun does not fight againsta Karate. People fight against other people.
hyeman79 1 year ago
@bunkai23
He is just an actor, and trained Karate just couple of months, especially for this movie, while Donie Yen is indeed a good kung-fu master (not wing-chun)

ding301 1 year ago
@bunkai23 the problem of karate is that you have too many "empty" movements...you waste time doing tons of movements....and you do only one thing at a time...whereas wing tsun is attacking AND defending in ONE step. Karate is more like a sport....wt is the art of defending your self as effectively as possible...it's like comparing a formula1 car with a tank...the car is superior in a race...but the tank wins a battle...
750gramm 1 year ago
@750gramm If you can combine hand of wc and feet of karate... i think youre ok....:-)
TheMotogavlas84 1 year ago
@bunkai23 I think Wing Chun's theory and practice of working in close is its strength given that we have a visual perception lag that can be bypassed when in actual close contact.
Kinda like golf. Big drivers don't win tournaments, it's the short game and the putting that does.
Any kata that can use an enemy's attack to his own disadvantage is a winning kata. Aikido, WT falls into this category (katagory?)
tachikaze222 1 year ago
@bunkai23 You got a strong point.
TheMotogavlas84 1 year ago
@bunkai23 I learned karate for 3,5 years. shotokan. I totally agree with your opinion! And if you fiond any movie where karate wins a fight, tell me ^^
but this movie scene is fair to the karate-do, because this is just a good karateka and the oponent is the biggest wung tsun fighter ever ^^ and sometimes it's very close ;-) so I think karate is not so bad displayed in this scene.
daikirainayume 1 year ago
@daikirainayume i do agree with you. but stil.. lol
i mean, i've never seen a movie where karate would win. that actually gives a pretty bad image of what this martial art really is.
bunkai23 1 year ago
@bunkai23 no no ^^ you also never see a a Boxer wins a fight against some eastern fighter ^^ and it's effectiv as hell, because you just train one punch for knock out.
and you never see a Samurai win against an kung fu swordsman, too.
AH never mind,. in my opinion shotokan is very very effectiv. it just look a little bit more boring comparing it with kungfu and stuff. :-) it's just because the focus is on effectivity. SO be proud.^^
daikirainayume 1 year ago
@bunkai23: It is, it depends on the practitioner not the style.

@bunkai23 Well actually...
Earlier in this movie the General (the guy fighting Ipman) fought with 3 Kung Fu fighters and won. Killing Crazy Lee which caused the series of events that led up to this point. But I digress there are movies out there that show great ass kickings featuring Karate.
horrorfan117 1 year ago
@bunkai23 maybe you should try and find a Japanese movie. lol
adrianyuen1906 1 year ago
@bunkai23 there is no best martial arts form it's all depends on the fighter itself. In this case ip man did beat the karate guy. It's a fact. the movie is based on true stories. And beside in this movie, karate wasn't that bad was it?
ken700ken 1 year ago
@bunkai23 agree, just some people dont like japanese due to the historical reasons.
TheDiseaseDevil 1 year ago
@bunkai23 osu hello fellow karate brother I train in the shotokan system also and I agree with you , there's too many kung fu movies where some kung fu guy beats up a karate brother like its too easy and it fools many non martial artist to think that kung fu is superior , I personally think its the chinese government behind it makin kung fu win over karate in films , its offensive to the art of karate and there should be films where karate beats kung fu
TheShotokankarateguy 1 year ago
@TheShotokankarateguy I totally agree with you! Shotokan's always being kicked out of every thing. If some guy has to be beaten up , he's always practising shotokan. All this shit started with Bruce Lee movies. I love Bruce Lee, but then Jet Li did it, Jackie Chan...and so on.. I wish some Japonese movies were made where Kung fu would (for the 1st time ever) be kicked out.
I wish Sensei Taji Kase were still alive and be in a movie.lol they'd see if Karate's not effficent..
bunkai23 1 year ago
@bunkai23 I wished sensei nakayama made some movies but sensei naka tatsuya in kuro-obi made a movie in 2009 called high kick girl , in that movie karate kicked some ass and sensei tatsuya is JKA so its shotokan , the girl in high kick girl did shorin ryu

merotwt 2 years ago
well why the fuck do you think that is knob jockey? China isnt going to make all their films about a foreign style beating a Chinese style....
Also because Wing Chun is obviously a better fighting system. Someone who knew nothing about martial arts could just look at their stances and tell which one was more practical.
Scrungie1 2 years ago
@Scrungie1 WC is better? When has that been proven?
mmtxaz 2 years ago
WC uses less energy, delivers more power and doesn't require much physical conditioning. Im not saying every WC practitioner will win against karate... that depends on the individual. but its a better system to learn for the average person.
if fighting systems had never been developed and you saw two people ready to fight in the stances shown here, which do you think looks like a smarter more effective way to prepare? having your arms up to guard your face? or having them cocked at your sides?
Scrungie1 2 years ago
@Scrungie1 In a real fight, a karate guy won't cock his arms to his side. Plus karate uses the hips to generate power unlike WC.
mmtxaz 2 years ago
Oh ok, my mistake. Is the cocked arm just for katas?
Well Wing Chun uses the entire body to generate power, like the 1 inch punch. Its not just moving your arm forward, the power comes from subtle but powerful body movement.
Scrungie1 2 years ago
@mmtxaz Watch a karateka beat up a wooden dummy, then feel pain all over. Watch an 80 year old man practice on a wooden dummy and broke it - just with a simple raise of a hand. Does karate teach you how to fight wing chun techniques? In wing chun, practitioners are trained to handle many types strikes. Can a karateka still defend himself when his arms are pinned?
JoGenJG 1 year ago
@mmtxaz I do practice wing chun, but i'm still a great fan of enshin karate. If i were to be a master in enshin, i will hesitate to fighting a master in wing chun.
