  • Hauntingly beautiful!

  • AWESOME !!!!! <3

  • Nice, Folk music using an older version of Modern Swedish spoken in the early 20th century ^^

    Cheers!

  • Good work with the explanations and the lyrics!

  • Roll that R, I dare you!

  • @SvitjodsWarrior besides swedish (and specially in old pronouncing), any spanish, italian, russian, ucranian or polish (for saying a few among europe) can roll the R like that ;)

  • @davealcarin There are plenty of poles living in Sweden, And no they really can´t roll any R´s, Nor can any Russians here i´ve met.

  • @SvitjodsWarrior hm... well, I was in southern Poland some time ago and they could do it! And also I've met several russians and also could roll it... maybe it's kind of dialectal pronounciation?

In spanish we have two different rolling R's (rolling once or multiple rolling) and an ucranian friend of mine can't do properly the soft one xD always the hard rolling like here.

  • @SvitjodsWarrior I know a Pole that lived 6 years of his life in Poland and now lives in Belgium, and he perfectly rolls the R.

  • @davealcarin I can roll the R, I'm Belgian (Dutch-part)

  • @knorieworiebobsnor nice, i really love the rolling R's ;) You can do it from you belgian part or from your dutch part? I mean: is it more common in dutch accent or in belgian accent to roll the R's?

  • @davealcarin Well, there is no language called Belgian. In the north-half of Belgium, people speak Dutch, like in the Netherlands; in the south-part people speak French, like in France of course. And there is also a little part where they speak German. In the Netherlands they speak more with the English R.

  • @knorieworiebobsnor I know about "belgian", that's why I said "accent" instead of "language", because I suppose that belgians have, like everyone, different accents depending on their area ;)

  • @davealcarin We Belgians hate the sound of Dutch-Dutch, if you get my mening

  • @knorieworiebobsnor LoL I'm sure it doesn't compare how we Dutch hear your Frenchy Dutch.

  • @Spartiatai300 indeed

  • @SvitjodsWarrior in Italy, the 'R' sound varies with local dialects, in some regions is softer, while in Rome is particularly harsh and often doubled even if it's not necessary: "A Roma" that means "In Rome" becomes "A Rroma".

  • Ein schönes Lied. :)

  • Hermoso idioma :)

  • @davealcarin I see. Not bad at all. But yes, swedish is known to be a difficult language to learn. I am at the moment in Schweiz, trying to learn german and spanish. German is quite easy because it's so close to the swedish language, but spanish is a bit harder. Thanks for the upload anyway, amazing song.

  • @davealcarin doğru diyon hacı, bu yukardaki bilmiyor ;) (Y)

  • @davealcarin Waow

    Grandes Saludos

    Buenas Lunas

  • it's just. beautiful.

  • best Arkanum song ever!

  • :.(

  • @WALOKEINELUSTful

The version that In Extremo made is also good but their prenounciation is terrible and doesn't sound like swedish at all. They should have made it in german and it would have been awesome.

  • @TrueMetal80 not all of the us is like that but most are it sucks to be part of it and this band is awesome

  • @TrueMetal80 You know, because the USA does bad things like generalize people and make assumptions about individuals based on their nationality .... OH WAIT THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE DOING XD

  • Best version on the net, in my humble opinion.

  • @TrueMetal80 yeah, especially when they fought nazi

  • Haggard,In Extremo, y Garmarna tocan esta cancion mamalonamente! xD

  • @TrueMetal80 There is more ignorance and greed than I'd like to admit in the USA, and I worry for our future. But know that we don't all fit your description, majority of us despise the same type of ignorant people you describe.

  • @goneinthefade I totally agree with you. A similar case is Brazil: more ignorance than I'd like to admit, but not that greedy. Brazil is more or less the unambitious and friendly nation that would be marvelous if it weren't so schokingly stupid. Most of our corruption is our political system allied with our stupid electors. But, still, don't generalize.

  • nie mam słów zajebiste

  • Totally aweseome!

  • @2011Bolt did you mean awesome?

  • @TrueMetal80

Agree. The citizens of USA are idiots. But it is the political system there which is to be blamed for the corruption of nation.

  • @NathanRomml well, there are many kikes in the us

  • ...last gods music......great)))

  • Gracias, esto esta genial!!!

  • Gothic: Goþ þus ist haihamma galeiþan in þiudangardja gudis.English: Good for you is to travel to heaven into god´s kingdom.

Garmarnas music is heavenly. Garmarna ist batists. Garmarna is best.

  • lol I'm German and understand it a little bit

  • nice translations dude

  • By the way im sorry.. i said the wrong date:

German Reich died in 1918, not in 1933.. it was already dead when Hitler took it to the last great war.

    eres suec@?

  • Garmarna är riktigt jävla bra!

  • Mr. Mannelig is a medieval old Swedish ballad, which tells the story of a desperate Trollin who would like to be human. She is convinced that it can be a man when she married Mr. Mannelig. They would shower him with gifts, but he declines, mainly due to its lack of Christian faith.

Garmarna and others use for interpretation by no means the "Fornsvenska" (Old Norse / Swedish), but rather a form of the later "Nysvenska" (New Sweden). I know it, because im from denmark, and i was born in sweden.

  • @ShintaroKurenai

yes, it sounds like early 19th century Swedish. =:-)

  • @TrueMetal80 What? USA has done a lot fo good things for democracy too. Yes, they are a little trigger-happy, and the bombing of Serbia ten years ago should have been solved in an other way, but on the same time they really act against terrorists.

  • @alarik36 They done alot of good things? when and where? Its the only nation that has gone to war so often on a wide scale for no reason besides greed. And democracy is just really not helping anything its an illusion after all.

  • @Rawsawn

    Democrazy ist an illusion?

Even our Emperors (like Hitler) have been voted cuz most of the people wanted them. With Monarchy that wouldnt have been possible.

  • Stop comparing Haggard with Garmarna, I think they both make good music, if you like one doesn't mean you have to hate the other

  • qe idioma ezz??

  • Thanks from Russia for a song

  • @MrEastpower Ага, ага:)))

  • this is awesome!

"handles about", " disunderstand". Haha, du är ju efterbliven på riktigt!

  • Me fascina ésta versión... xD

  • Beautiful tune

  • woooow:)

  • El de haggard es muy bueno tambien =)

  • It's a Swedish ballad about a mountain troll who want's to marry a knight. She promises him all sorts of gifts, but he still won't marry her, because she's not christian.

  • @TrueMetal80 Ohman, you're so metal. It's so unpopular to dislike Americans, you're such a rebel! How inspiring! How revolutionary!

I thought a prime reason many people hated Americans was because the country stereotypes like a motherfucker, but apparently no one's above a healthy dose of hypocrisy.

  • @TrueMetal80 you are an asshole

  • que idioma es ese....??????

  • @TrueMetal80 and fuck your diction.

  • @TrueMetal80 Great generalization! Keep up the good work.

  • In the picture in the middle looks like Leonidas MADNESS!!!!

  • This song is not about a simple woman that she's in love with a man and he just don't like her. It's about a female troll that she's in love with a knight called Her Mannelig, In the song she says what she will offer to him if he merry her, but he don't accept the gifts cause she's not a christian woman but devil's spirit...

  • @TrueMetal80

USA has done a lot of good things too, please think before writing.

Gothic: Ik hugsa Swiareikja ist batists-I think Sweden is best.(NOT sure of the grammar)

  • Hmmm, this is a very nice song.

Any1 has the translation or knows where to get it?

  • @MrLousyTube Herr means SIr, i know, i am swedish. And Sir means knight, Herr mannerlig means Sir Mannerlig

  • @Freddyandersson92 its like in german...

    herr means herr^^

  • -sigh- perfect to listen to while I do my hard Math assignments!

  • @finalfantasy4everock

haha thats EXACTLY what i'm doing!

  • One of the best versions of this Song i ever heared . Just Great !!! Thank you for sharing this.

    Greetings Hummelpiper

  • @Hummelpiper

But isn´t this the original version?

  • @alarik36 There is no such think as original version. Herr Mannelig is several hundred years old Swedish ballad. The author is unknown.

2 Aedren: translation can be found on wikipedia.

  • @MrLousyTube

I see that you are familiar with the matter, but I`m also sure of may statement.

Just take a look at the translation of the song for example at Wikipedia!

  • @MrLousyTube Well, swedish is an indo-european language, germanic. The "oldest" ancestor of swedish I know is the Old East Norse, the dialect of the Old Norse that was spoken in the south of Sweden, Denmark... in fact, danish is other language descending from this dialect. However, Norwegian, Faorese and Icelandic are descendants of the Old West Norse dialect.

  • @davealcarin

I am German, normally i understand a lot when Swedish talk, but in this case i understand nothing^^.

But still i recognize its a language of the time when my people used to fear the whole world.

    German Reich (R.I.P. 1933)

  • @MrLousyTube

The language of this ballad is the swedish spoken around 1800, but the story itself is much more older. It is supposed to have its origins in the middle ages.

A female troll is baging a knight called Herr(=knight) Mannelig to marry her, so she could get deliverance from the curse which afflicts her. But Herr Mannelig doesn`t want to get hitched to a heathen woman, so she is lamenting his refusal awfully.

  • Låten vackert

  • how can people spell that!! hahaha

  • @MrLousyTube if you want gealic check out Liam by in extremo

  • We should not discuss issues of no importance, Youtube was also created to find music so beautiful and enigmatic as it is this piece, we should stop talking for talking and start listening and appreciating....

    Sorry for my clumsy English

  • Wonderful

  • good but the version from In Extremo is better

  • So great...

  • @MrLousyTube It is certainly old Swedish also a bit mixed with norsk in pronounciation that is why it is kind of hard to understand. But gaelic isn't originally celtic at all, hence the fact celtic people were from the Britain island. It is more like a migrated germanic tribe in old Normandy. In spite of that, the lyrics are meant centuries after that migration or took place or the period the people using real gaelic existed, as i guess it would be about 6th century A.D.

  • Herr mannerlig is not an asshole. The woman is a foul mountaintroll! You know a troll, a creature of darkness and evil. I think this song is refering to old times when boys and girls would be married away to someone they don't like becauss of the wedding gift there family would get from the other family.

  • 35 people are mr Manneling.

  • I'm french, catholic, white and european and I like to hear such song !!!

  • @MrLousyTube hmm...is it really only americans that are stupid!?!?

  • Nice

  • Comment removed

  • dear shitting christ. its about a female troll in love, making a pass at some god-loving knight. get it right.

  • u talk about stupidity but u also post shit. the reason why herr mannelig doesnt marry the "woman" (cmon man, its a MOUNTAIN TROLL, female ok, but still a TROLL) is: becus she is not christ. so he is not able to receive her great presents (she want to give him 12 steeds, 12, mills, the finest sword ever and the finest shirt ever). then she ran out of the castle, shrieking and crying. its a real sad story in my oppinion, i almost cried myself :)

  • @bRkzJoker

Id love to see a translation of the song!

  • @MrLousyTube

Christianity, yes. The song is about a man who doesn't want to marry because the girl isn't christian.

  • @MrLousyTube Swedish is NOT gaelic! It's germanic like all Scandinavian and nordic languages are exept for Finnish wich is an Finno-Ugric language.

  • @Gothiaburger is it so hard to undrestand ..stop this discusion ..ist swedish

  • @MrLousyTube

it is about a female troll who wishes to marry a christian man. she wants to become immortal like this, but teh christian man does not want to, because she is a heathen troll.

  • @MrLousyTube I can understand every word of it and i'm swedish.

  • To everyone that still is wondering or will wonder: This song IS and WAS originaly written in Swedish and will so be. The end

  • @MrLousyTube Even I find it easy to know that it is Swedish: only the Swedish language has the letter "å", the equivalent of "aa". I'm not Swedish by the way...

  • @kenmordeno Thank you! Great knowledge for one from Filippinerna..appreciated. Greetings from Sweden! :)

  • @Gothiaburger Thanks! Cool Swedish name for the Philippines by the way =D I don't know that much though; I still have more to learn about other languages...=P

  • @kenmordeno Swedish isn't the only language with the â, Norwegian, for example uses this letter just as well. The â is only common in the skandinavian languages, is this what you ment?

By the way I love the song, its beautifully sung and I love the way the instrumental heightens throuout the song. Thanks for posting,

  • @LittleLimm That is true. Also the Norwegians and the Danish and even the Finnish uses the Å letter besides Sweden. Thank you!

  • @LittleLimm Thanks for the correction! More food for thought =D I am aware though that the Finnish use "å" to some extent, although there are those who want to eliminate it altogether and use "aa" instead... It's interesting how a couple of letters can denote a language, like "ð" and "Þ" in Íslenska, and "Đ" and letters with multiple diacritics in Tiếng Việt...

  • @MrLousyTube Yeah its swedish. Not that hard to understand either for a swede like me. its pretty simple swedish.

  • @MrLousyTube The song is old. yes, is nordic, yes, but the language is NOT gaelic. Don't you recognize a germanic language when you see it? Gaelic is celtic, and it's very different. This language is swedish, in some kind of "old" pronouncing, but swedish.

  • @davealcarin And it's about a troll-woman who tries to bribe a knight into marrying her.

  • @davealcarin It's pretty much a mix between Norwegian, Swedish and Danish. Back when those borders weren't too clear

So it's before those countries got converted to Christianity, yes.

  • @WGMindless what are you talking about?...this isnt old norse...this is old swedish...after the viking age when the three scandinavian languages began to go own ways(when scandinavia wasnt pagan anymore)!

  • @zillertaller Our languages were not more similar during the viking age. There were differences, far more great than there are today.

  • @cowsandspunges nope...you are wrong...they were more similar than they are today!

  • @davealcarin it is really obvious tht it is a Germanic language and it sounds really really good! thank you for sharing this song to us ,i admit tht i love wathing this vid of yours daily :)

  • Comment removed

  • @davealcarin aye swedish it is

  • @davealcarin

If I remember correctely, it is beeing pronounced in medieval Swedish. ^^

  • @davealcarin when you hear it is more right

  • was für eine sprache is des eig???

what is this for a language

  • @matzenbg1 Svenska (swedish)

  • @matzenbg1 Swedish

  • @matzenbg1 Its swedish :p Prenounced in old fashion, to fit in with the song, since its over 800 years old :p

  • poor troll girl....she must take Manneling as her breakfast...great vid!!

  • Comment removed

  • hab tränen in den augen.....

  • Gothic..... Gothic I

  • gammalsvenska låter så jävla fin asså.

innan jag flytta hit var enda svenskan jag kunde herr mannelig med fel uttal(baserat på inextremo versionen) så ingen förstod fan vad jag sa, även om jag sa "its old swedish, its a song"

  • Just so you know, we talk like this. Just not with all these words.

  • i feel bad for the troll

  • I'm not quiet sure that I understand the text? It's confusing, because I'm from Denmark, and I'm not sure about half the words!

  • @Billythachikk

it's about a female troll wich want to marry a knight and promisses him many things but in the end he don't want to

  • Das is Schon :)

  • I did'nt know, very nice song of Swedish Folklore.

  • awesome :D öuv it so much!!!

  • haggard and in extremo made such good covers of this song !

  • I am still wondering if the mountain troll is really cursed or if she just tries to seduce a man (for whatever reasons - but I have to think at the "Nighthags" from AD&D who bear some similarities to the female northern trolls and seduce men to get offsprings). In the first paragraph is said she'd talk in "falskeliger tunga", but after Herr Mannelig's denial she disappears and says something like "My torment would have been over if you would have married me."

  • No matter how often I listen to this, it still sends chills of delight down my spine. Love it!
