There was nothing cruel about what he said. He stated the fact that the human mind is susceptible to hallucination and that the hallucinations often draw on our cultural psyche - so that Hindus think they are in the presence of Shiva, Muslims the presence of Allah etc. If you feel the suggestion that these people have hallucinated is cruel, come up with some quantifiable proof.
The main problem with that situation was that Dawkins was absolutely sincere. As opposite to pussyfooting around the issue. That is all. People are just used to others giving margin for this specific type of hallucination.

Lots of people claim to peer pressure, that you can change your views once pressured. It mainly started in HS. I studied other religions for the first time. I realized that it was by chance that I was born into the religion I was. If I was born in the middle east I could just as easily have been a muslim or hindu. It was also by chance the era I live in. If I was in ancient Egypt, I would have worshipped Ra. So because I was born into Christianity I would assume it was the truth. I also realized that no matter which religion or when, I would always assume THAT one was correct.

Indeed, hallucinations can account for some of the god claims - after all, they can be caused by so many things: disease, exposure (e.g. walking around in the desert), mind-altering substances, sleep deprivation, stress, physical trauma, medication, wishful thinking, emotional vulnerability, depression, hunger, food poisoning, optical illusion, pareidolia..
But there's an even simpler explanation: some people just lie.

I would have to disagree with this video in one respect. Neil Degrasse Tyson fairly rebuked Dawkins for his insensitivity. There is a way to go about persuading people and giving your view without totally destroying someone. Some say that Dawkins polemical tone turns people off to his message, which is the last thing I think he wants. Look up "tyson rebukes dawkins" here on YouTube

Exactly. Dawkins actually gave the politest response that he possibly could have. He never actually told the guy he was wrong. He simply said, "I know you are sincere, but I think you are hallucinating." How could he be any more polite than that? If he were to say anything less decisive than that, he would be lying.

Anyone who claims they have seen God, or Jesus, and spoken to them, is essentially saying that atheists are delusional and their whole worldview is wrong. It just happens to work the other way too.
There's only one thing that is for sure - we will all know the truth after we die. No one has the authority to speak for anyone else, much less deny anyone's personal experiences. i.e. You say you experienced something and I, without even knowing you, accuse you of lying. You can only speak for yourself and those you've actually met. Asserting sweeping generalizations on those you've never even met is highly erroneous, at best.
True, Dawkins can't speak with absolute certainty about the personal and unprovable experiences of a complete stranger. However, based on his own experiences and understanding of how the world works, and talks with other people who have claimed similar things, he has to make an educated guess that what this man claims to have experienced is not real. It's just his educated opinion, and that's all one can expect from him with regards to absolute certainty.
The man is essentially saying "Oh yeah? Well if God isn't real, how come I've seen him? What do you say to that?" It's a stupid question, whether he's just making it up or not. It doesn't contribute anything to the debate, as his claims have no evidence to back them up and are not observable by anyone else. If someone told me they met Elvis yesterday, are you going to tell me that I have no right to doubt them and tell them they are probably mistaken?

There was nothing cruel about what he said. He stated the fact that the human mind is susceptible to hallucination and that the hallucinations often draw on our cultural psyche - so that Hindus think they are in the presence of Shiva, Muslims the presence of Allah etc. If you feel the suggestion that these people have hallucinated is cruel, come up with some quantifiable proof.

Most religious people have been surrounded their entire lives by people who AGREE with them. Their whole life they have been reassured by friends and family that their religion is true and sacred.Never once have they been challenged. Never once have they questioned.Never once did they even research their so called "truth".To them, the subject of their own religion is beyond reproach.

Lots of people claim to peer pressure, that you can change your views once pressured. I believe though that yes, argument challenges our belief but just as you find evidence to back your arguments, we can back ours with our evidence. They are not tangible, true, but it is not about tangibility. It is just a question of faith every time.

It mainly started in HS. I studied other religions for the first time. I realized that it was by chance that I was born into the religion I was. If I was born in the middle east I could just as easily have been a muslim or hindu. It was also by chance the era I live in. If I was in ancient Egypt, I would have worshipped Ra. So because I was born into Christianity I would assume it was the truth. I also realized that no matter which religion or when, I would always assume THAT one was correct.

If you were born in Ancient Greece, I dare say you would believe that the sun revolves around the Earth.
Does this make you wrong in believing the way we do now that the Earth in fact revolves around the sun along with all the other planets?

@thinkalott33 feelings in the heart is a figure of speech in modern times. in the old days b4 man knew any better, they assumed the expression because of the unmistakeable sensations of the increasing rapidity of beats of the heart when the individual is excited whether in fear/love or disgust. it is the brain that sends the message to the pump. heart transplant patients do not suffer a loss of emotions because of mechanical parts.

@thinkalott33 The human brain, the eyes, the heart, are all the result of countless generations of selection. Pre-humans with smaller brains were out-competed by those with larger ones. The bigger brained ones had more kids. That's how it works.
That's also why we don't have large hearts. It was more important to be upright carrying tools than to be fast.
If you're injured, your body has some ability to repair itself. Your blood clots, your bones mend. But parts don't reattach. Why would they?

The bible talked about lots of things in very general ways. It is about things hundreds of years ago. Just as there was then, there are still plagues, dictators, starvation, and war today. So what?
George Orwell wrote a book in 1949 that predicted big screen TVs. Does that make '1984' divine? I don't think so.

Indeed, hallucinations can account for some of the god claims - after all, they can be caused by so many things: disease, exposure (e.g. walking around in the desert), mind-altering substances, sleep deprivation, stress, physical trauma, medication, wishful thinking, emotional vulnerability, depression, hunger, food poisoning, optical illusion, pareidolia..
But there's an even simpler explanation: some people just lie.

I would have to disagree with this video in one respect. Neil Degrasse Tyson fairly rebuked Dawkins for his insensitivity. There is a way to go about persuading people and giving your view without totally destroying someone. Some say that Dawkins polemical tone turns people off to his message, which is the last thing I think he wants. Look up "tyson rebukes dawkins" here on YouTube

I think you are incorrectly assuming that there is some sort of progression in evolution, of which humans are the top. we just happened to evolve differently than our ape ancestors, who eventually became modern apes. most apes are several times stronger than the strongest human, much more agile than the greatest gymnast, and even sometimes better looking! (lol) We are not the objective "best."

True, Dawkins can't speak with absolute certainty about the personal and unprovable experiences of a complete stranger. However, based on his own experiences and understanding of how the world works, and talks with other people who have claimed similar things, he has to make an educated guess that what this man claims to have experienced is not real. It's just his educated opinion, and that's all one can expect from him with regards to absolute certainty.

It doesn't contribute anything to the debate, as his claims have no evidence to back them up and are not observable by anyone else.
