It is really ironical that the atheist that has to come out to potentially hostile religious parents is forced to emphasized not being a jerk about it. the reason that they have to "come out" is because the religious ones are obviously going to be jerks about it
does being Christian imply that you think all jews are idiots?
Atheists don't think you're an idiot for believing in God. That's your own insecurity. Frankly as an Atheist, I can see many reasons why a person would believe in God or want to. Life is mysterious and God is a comforting idea for many. It's not a choice for me. I just can't believe because it doesn't make sense to me. If it makes sense to you, then I really can't argue can I? Plus, I don't care. So calm down.
I am an Antitheist and I'll tell you why, look at the legacy religion has created for itself. My logic tells me to be atheistic, but my morals tell me to be antitheistic. It has blood on it's hands, lust in it's eyes, and a fat greedy mouth full of money. But worst of all, it gets in the way of science. Now I know there are plenty of great religious scientists who compartmentalize their work and their beliefs, but what about all those dumbed down fundamentalist kids with untapped potential?
I'm opposed to organized religion in some ways. But I don't think I have a problem with people believing in God. I don't believe in a God. But here's some of what I would hypothesize about our existence and the universe based on my observations.
Everything is connected in some way. (see quantum physics)
this is what i believe, it may be that we are part of a larger reality that we can't see or examine, it suffices me though to treat this universe as reality and not as an illusion. quantum physics shows that particles can be made to be connected but certainly not the entire universe. we evolved outside the logic of quantum physics and as we now learn about it we make sense of it in our much larger realm of logic and thus find it mystical.
continued... love is a construct used to make us behave in a way that is beneficial to our genes being passed on, in more ways than one. Hatred and fear are in the same boat, but each in moderation, too much of any emotion will rot the mind.i believe in consequence not karma. i believe mystical experience is hard wired into us and while fun at the time should be examined properly without bias from wanting it to be real.
continued... there is rarely true black and white, but we perceive shades of gray as either one or the other. i believe the world is in slavery to a few people... and the majority of them like it. i believe people are wilder than any other animal. i believe i am lucky to be here, even though i believe in one timeline and one universe and that because choices are based on experience and genetic predisposition, the universe is deterministic. sorry about the weird rant just there!
1:58 your right because then they would be sinking to the level of self-righteous religious zealots, no one has the end all truth, but really atheism cares about one subject and one subject only "not believing in a god(s)" which is fundamentally different that denying god. although to a religious person who has little understanding of the inner workings of the rules of logic. either A or not A. incorrect would be A or (since not A) then B. basic stuff, so basic...
Atheist isnt cool at all. You guys complain and hate about peoples religions. Thats not cool to rule out a group of people and be a jerk about it. I dont even beleive and God, sins, blah blah and im not religious atl but damn you people annoy me just as much as converters do.
and of course none of the Christians are elitist at all. Give me break. they're the biggest snobs of them all. tell a christian you're an atheist and they look at you like you just admitted to devil worship and puppy kicking. obviously we atheists have no morals at all. See you in hell.
Actually I'm an atheist, I've been open about it since 12 years old, but was never a jerk. My family doesn't really care about the religion, they just care about my actions, what I do makes me a good/bad person, not what kind of an invisible man i believe in.
Only my grandma goes to church, but as she said "Well.. a man's gotta believe in something, otherwise how are we different from other animals"
So we don't talk shit about religion, but we don't take it seriously.
Okay sure those cute kittens aren't going to hell...but according to my fundy family they're also not going to heaven (animals don't have souls so they can't get into heave)...sigh
And don't kid yourself! My family would DEFINITELY reject me. They've already said they believe I'm going to hell! I am, after all (in their words) "Satan's tool". I'm thinking that a cutsie card wouldn't cut it for them....but all the same I do love the "Samaritatheist".
Anybody so biggoted that you'd have to be this careful about telling them you don't share their beliefs isn't somebody worth associating with.

Everything is connected in some way. (see quantum physics)
Love is a powerful force. (see my own heart/mind)
Hatred and fear rot the mind.
we create our own heaven or hell here on earth

Those cards are great, but I am a jerk about being an atheist because I do think everyone else is deluded (no offense... kind of).

I think if they DO reject you, the "Samaritatheist" card puts the moral burden onto them. As it should! Sorry to hear about it, though.
