...pretty easy....? Learn somethings of our bloody past.It was one time when there was no man older then 16 in Sweden, the rest was fighting wars.We learnd the hard way that war is just sick and we dont wont it anymore.
@mackszzz I agree. Maybe Britain should have stayed neutral, too, in 1914 and 1939. But if it did, there would be no free Europe and no mervellous art like Abba made, in a free, democratic, and trading Europe, and World. Best wishes from Japan.
Swedish soldiers, thankfully, have had it pretty easy. Owing to neutrality. Other countries have lost millions. When I hear this I think of the Tommies laying in Belgium fields. By the hundred of thousand. Good men.
i was 3 years old when this was released i now even have the visitors album on vinyl left to me by my father. Does anybody know if there is actually an official music video ?
This song was way ahead of it's time. Eventhough it's nearly 30 years old it's lyrics are as relevant and important as they were then. Perhaps even more today especially with all the turmoil that the world is going through. Really beautiful and true.
This is probably one of my favorite Abba songs. I remember my older brother playing it in his car when I was 12, and he had just bought their last tape "The Visitors" in 1981. Brings back a lot of memories.
They probably would have surpassed the Beatles etc in record sales if they had toured the states, but I don't believe they ever did. Agnetha is afraid to fly. They went to Australia. I wonder if she flew then? They could tour Europe by bus and ferry.
@wieslawl59 they toured the states ONCE, with very few venues, in cities they felt like they were "big" and spent so little in promotion. Anyone who tours the States knows you need soooooooooo much more time, venues and money.
@BIGINSF ABBA actually toured the USA and Canada in 1979 as part of their tour that year. And of course they flew to Australia. They flew to Japan as well. Agnetha's fear of flying actually started during their American tour due to a serious incident with one of their planes.
@bladesmark1 Beatles and Elvis have sold more records because they had USA and were "american like". ABBA was native scandinavian for fuck's sakes, with quality to their music that even shouldnt be played on american radios...
@bladesmark1 And I dont give a f*** how many records The Beatles and ELvis have sold. Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez have sold millions of records, does this make their music listenable? Hardly. What im saying is that IMO Elvis and Beatles' music is B-O-R-I-N-G!
@ChineseAuthority If you don't give a f*** about how many records The Beatles and Elvis have sold then stop fucking butting in on peoples conversations!
@bladesmark1 i thought Youtube was also a social network, not your OWN network... and besides that, without my posts, you would be left here alone. and i think that is what you deserve Mr. I-Read-Books...
@ChineseAuthority Who said anything about it being my own network??I was having a conversation with wieslawl59 before you butted in!now you claim your not interested in how many records the beatles/elvis have sold so why but in on peoples conversations then? Mr Empty Head
@ChineseAuthority If ABBA had been promoted aggressively in the US and toured here more, they would have blown both Elvis and the Beatles into the water. I agree with you. These jokers who disagree with you don't know real melody. And relying on sales as a mark of quality would mean Brtiney and Bieber are the best artists of today, but that isn't the case, right?
@bladesmark1 Actually nobody knows exactly how many records of The Beatles and Elvis were sold. It's only guesstimates, and probably greatly exaggerated.
@wieslawl59 I actually read books, study bands & believe me ABBA doesn't come close to the two artists i've already mentioned & even Michael Jackson has shifted more records than ABBA.
@bladesmark1 Congratulations for reading books. You must be the only one on the planet. But seriously, believe me, just because something is written in books, doesn't automatically make it true. I remember in 80's or 90's when Abba began to approach the alleged figures of the Beatles sales, they suddenly doubled, though there was no reason to believe anybody was buying them any longer. I go to the music stores, and I can see what is flying off the shelves.
@wieslawl59 If you believe that ABBA has shifted just as many records than the Beatles,Elvis & M.Jackson then thats your opinion & your opinion only, anyone with half a brain cell knows different.
@bladesmark1 You don't have to be rude.It means that you are uncertain. And don't express opinion of the whole world. You do not have the mandate to do this. What I believe is not important here. What I implied was, that there is absolutely no reliable sources to assess exactly , how many copies was sold.Nobody kept an eye on this in the sixties.
@wieslawl59 I don't need to be rude?A bit rich coming yourself don't you think? Anyway what was the Beatles alleged figures & what was they after they (supposed to have) doubled because personally i think you are being a little bit bias towards ABBA.
@ChineseAuthority What would you know eh thinking that the Beatles were American like??Besides i'm not knocking ABBA because they are one of my all time favourite bands,It goes to show how much knowledge you have when you say the Beatles & Elvis were boring can you be at least a bit more constructive in your posts.
come on make a come back already - im sure you miss it. you could make it for loves sake. im sure you all love your music and miss your chemistry. while thinking check out my songs too.
ABBA... THE BEST GROUP EVER NOT ONLY FOR THEIR MUSIC, BUT THEY BEHAVED LIKE PROFESSIONALS.. NO DRUG SCANDLES AND ALL THAT, UNLIKE MOST OF THE CRAP SINGERS WE HAVE TODAY.. GOD BLESS THEM ALL
awsome song!! not just the lyricks are of interest, but also the way they put the music together!! it just brings me in some kind of trance, i wake up when the song is over. magic was created by Benny Björn Frida and Agnetha!!
@royraaijmakers in fact it was Frida Agnetha and Benny and Bjorn who created magic, because if you take the voices away the magic is just gone but the music would in my opinion still be usable in musical concepts you should try to test this: listing without the voices, it is hard to do but if your ears are made for music it is worth trying, and you will tell me that I was right.
I respect the tone and intent of this song. Their darker, more melancholy "Visitors" album has had a lasting impression upon me.. The soldier is a paradox - the best & the worst of humanity. What is it really that we are doing with our short, chaotic & brutish lives? This song haunts me - as it was clearly intended to do. Words of praise fail me here. The theme they present cuts deep.
I wanted to thank you. You have described to perfection the paradigm that has evaded me for years. Militarism and the soldier. They exactly represent what you have beautifully expressed. I will remember your words. Strive for peace brother.

@daviej6666 this song isnt about soldiers per se. thats the thing about abba. if you listen in between the lines, you will find its likely about something deeper- this song is most likely about child abuse survivors. the lines "lets not look the other way taking a chance, cos if the bugler starts to play, we too must dance" means dont turn a blind eye.the song tiger is about heroin abuse. the song the visitors is about ww2. abba are endlessly fascinating and these are their best songs.
At 2:10 does anyone know what the sign that is circled at the top right is? It is some kiind of shop or something? Just wondering. Great song by the way!
Swedish soldiers have always been a domestic, territorial force in modern times. Neutral, not involved in any conflict, even WW2. "Nothing in the world" was wrong for them. Cracking song.
Sweden supplied a huge amount of iron ore for nazi germany, crucial to keep their war machine going, so that's for not being involved in WWII. Ayway, I think you did the right thing. The alternative was to be occupied by germans and they would had that ore anyways. However, ABBA is high above any warfare and other stupidities of mankind. "Soldiers" could easily be the most important songe ever written.
the more I discover new ABBA songs, the more I realise how bland and unoriginal modern pop music is. Modern singers have a hit and then just make new versions of it... ABBA have songs of all kind and they are all great!
At whom do they look? I hobby FM transmitted 8-track Soldiers along the Trinity River (Texas) in 1982, walked and listened constantly. Then fell in love with Bang-A-Boomerang, Chiquitita, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Hasta Mañana, on the way to college. Discovered all the other wonderful stuff. I'd like to think they're lookiing at me.
ABBA's last few years were tense, and the music was superlative. I empathize with their dark brooding mindset during visitors. The tinge of despair really grips my soul - proof to me of their arrival as artists. To me 1981 was their glory year.
THE VISITORS is not just the best abba album, it is the best album full stop! But it takes a very long time to get into it, took me years to fully appreciate it. Every song is a masterpiece and it holds together perfectly. Great video - but you should have added the eerie distorted photo of the group from the UNDER ATTACK single cover, that fits in perfectly with the mood of this rather disturbing track.
After being forced to listen to hours of shitty rap and pop songs on the speakers in college, I recently decided to play the entire ABBA Gold album...
I was totally surprised. This guy who only listens to electronica turned around and said "I can't believe your getting me into Abba". I gave him the album, now he's hooked. That's the great thing about this band. Their music is totally accessible to everyone.
Indeed. I think the simply reason is that the brains behind the girls and the band Benne and Bjorn (good old schoolfriends that never parted) listened always to the radio songs at the moment of making a new song and then they mixed up some ryhtms as samples to create a new sound from existing ones that were separate in the world (this song is a very good one to understand this if you hear the beat only you can certainly say that it is a timeless beat.and in oopsstereo (not swappable)
@nanarjain74 Indeed - it was SO underrated. Very much darker and quite different from the previous ones but really fabulous. You can feel their emotion in the songs
The more you hear them the more you want to.They seem to hook you some how.Songs that at first you hear may not grab you at first but you play it again & again & you realize that they have you on another song. Was there any body better?Doubt it!
I completly share your point of view, thirty years ago from now, ABBA was for me just another pop group, although I had been hooked by "The winner takes it all" like anybody else, I had not gone deep into there melodies and their wording. I bought a cd 2 yeas ago and progressively, I started loving one more and two more, and more and more of their songs. Perfect music, touching words, truth in the feelings, ... I am completly overhelmed by ABBA's magic - Thank you for their music
This song is so haunting and so relevant in today's world. True bravura from a timeless group. ABBA's music will live forever for one simple reason, it is some of the best music and lyrics ever written.
Alot of people these days remember ABBA for their chart hits but the true story is that they never made a bad record, even their album tracks were awsome.
although I fell in Love with ABBA by first "sight" in 1974 (Brighton...) and I prefer their early works, I really really love this song. What a pity that it never made it to a single. ABBA FOR-EVER
I had a notion that if they re-released all their "lesser" tunes on a new CD that it would do very well. I'd buy a new ABBA CD in an instant. Soldier, the Piper,Eagle, etcetera, would all sound good. I like their later 'unhappy years' work. It's deeper and richer in a gothic kinda way.
I am 17 and my favourite group is ABBA scince 2009! !! ! ! ! ! ! I LOVE ABBA ♥♥♥♥♥ !

Congrats on your first post. This song, this group, truly before their time, yet timeless. Thanks for posting and jiggin a few memories mate.

And amazingly so, the song is more relevant now that it was back then! ABBA songs have a way of staying relevant, even by today's standards.

Powerful. ABBA rules.

@Sambucca

@sondano sorry, but whoever calls Visitors their best album in my point of view has no taste at all
dustinzk 1 year ago
Why? It's their most matured album. It had few hits but many more brilliant compositions.

@nanarjain74 Indeed - it was SO underrated. Very much darker and quite different from the previous ones but really fabulous. You can feel their emotion in the songs

The Moody Blues equal ABBA

I completly share your point of view, thirty years ago from now, ABBA was for me just another pop group, although I had been hooked by "The winner takes it all" like anybody else, I had not gone deep into there melodies and their wording. I bought a cd 2 yeas ago and progressively, I started loving one more and two more, and more and more of their songs. Perfect music, touching words, truth in the feelings, ... I am completly overhelmed by ABBA's magic - Thank you for their music

The ABBA-best group of the last 100 years. It is not assured that somebody can surpass them as soon as possible!

This song is so haunting and so relevant in today's world. True bravura from a timeless group. ABBA's music will live forever for one simple reason, it is some of the best music and lyrics ever written.

although I fell in Love with ABBA by first "sight" in 1974 (Brighton...) and I prefer their early works, I really really love this song. What a pity that it never made it to a single. ABBA FOR-EVER
Thank u fo rposting this

The Girls sound sooo goood in this tune.
Love ABBA forever!
