  • OMG, i was there! but i can't remember they played Orion. It's probably my favorite Metallica song

  • I think it must have been difficult for Rob to have to do all his work as bassist thinking that the other members wanted it to be like Cliff, by the way he plays, I remember the first time Rob played Orion .... was a mess, but I can say this time you can appreciate their good work with the low ROB GJ

  • Love'd the part from 0:00 to 9:55

  • so fucking heavy!!!

  • starting @ 4:03...the look on James face...you can tell hes thinking of Cliff, while listening to Rob....thats how awesome of a player Rob is...just like cliff with the fingertap technique vs. the picking stlye of Jason...if you close your eyes and concentrate hard enough...it sounds like cliff is there playing himself!

  • cliff is greatly missed and was another great taken way to soon from this world...I wonder if he would be playing along side metallica still or doing the solo thing with other greats like billy sheehan, ect...blowing all our minds with his riffs that only cliff could play

  • Well Rob, I did not believe in you but you were able this a song. In memory of Cliff Burton. CLIFF'Em All

  • Metallica is the best phenomenon in music ever

  • Comment removed

  • Metallica is the best fucking heavy metal band ever. RIP Cliff

  • Those 5 people who thumbs downed this are going to die in a bus accident. RIP Cliff Burton! May the gods of rock treat you as one of thier own!

  • Cara! Para quem esteve nesse show foram 8 minutos de puro delirio

  • GIEF CLIFF BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 7:35

Most fucking epic thing in the world, only second to sex

  • sorry I wrote my comment to a not proper video. Any way please check my videos, please! :D

  • check outta my cover of this MASTERRRA song, please dudes, cheers!

  • i bet they all thought of cliff when they played this song

  • was that opening bass riff based of something it was fuckoin sweet

  • cliff is the masterrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • @apdata123

It's a strap to stop cuts and brusing on his right hand. If you've seen the second Year and A Half video at the beginning after a show he shows you his right hand and it is badly bruised from all the palm muting.

  • did they play damage inc. after this?

  • Comment removed

  • @PerryLadVids Yes. All the records of MOP. Great, great concert. Banged my head off.

  • Shit ik moes er eigenlijk bij zijn

  • what is that white thing kirk got on his hand? 6:30

  • A strap on his right hand as everytime :p

  • its a white strap that he uses so the last 3 strings dont cut his hand when he palm mutes..

  • @apdata123 so when he does palm mutes he doesnt want to cut his hand

  • Alot of metal guitar players do palm mute and don't use that strap, i think he uses that strap for another reason

  • Great intro by Rob

  • Rob played it quite well

  • I think it's cool that Kirk has all of the solos because if you read the liner notes in Master Of Puppets James has a solo in the song. The 2nd solo I believe it is.

  • This is by far one of my favorite Metallica compositions, every time I hear it I think of the bus accident and of Cliff, and when I start to get lost in the music, I think to myself, what do Kirk James and Lars feel when they play it?

I know must be really into it, 'specially around 4:05 and the second part.

May the spirit of one of the greatest bass players of all live forever in our hearts, may Cliff live on forever in his afterlife.

    \m/

  • from the way that i understand this was the first time in 20 years they played the song...at least live, i dont know how true that is but i cant ne performance besides this one and more recent ones

  • you forgot one thing.

ever thought about what rob thinks?

he's playing the greatest masterpiece of his idol cliff...i think u can see and hear how grateful he is..

    RIP clifford lee burton...

  • @Freezaen Nice comment, I bet you cant wait to meet him when you die huh?

  • @omnipotent1995 Totally, gonna shake his hands, then have a beer with him and Jesus. XD

  • Cliff Burton; Forever in our hearts! R.I.P.

    \m/

  • R.I.P. Cliff burton

  • it always makes me wonder how cliff could play it live.

  • it would freak the whole stadium everybody would be going mad

  • But Rob play it very good too.

  • first time i hear them playing the full version of orion live

  • Yes, you're right. It's the first time they've played it since something in the late 80s. But it's still great - all hail to Cliff Burton!

  • i was there

  • 2:57 wtf?

  • his wireless cut out

  • @pauliegtm If you listen to the main riff in the beginning with headphones or good speakers you can hear that Kirk is out of tune... Compared to when they play the exact riff right before his first solo.

  • @MrCherryKush thats why he jumped off and ran to change guitars.

  • @pauliegtm And when they strum Ab to Eb to Cb you see James look at kirk Like... " Wtf? What are you doing?" lol

  • you forgot one. suicide and redemtion

  • no he didn't......he named all the good ones

  • The he missed Suicide and Redemption :P

  • Playing this song with my band soon. Learning the very end solo.

  • 7:23 --- kirk fucked up the solo :(

  • Actually he isnt.He is improvising... man!

  • sounds so fucked up man..how can he be improvising in that part? listen it closely, that's not improvising

  • I heard it man. There are some pinch harmonics and some bends.... Id ont see anything :) Rock on

  • come on...the part from 7:23-7:25 sounds like a shit...he did a little mistake..but i still love the song

  • you guys cant expect kirk to play the same solo from (in this case) 20 years ago exactly the same without getting bored and adding some bends/harmonics

  • This is GREAT!

    Love it!

  • hopefully robert will play that riff when i go see metallica this december

  • can sum1 tell me wut effect hes using during the beginning when hes doin the bass solo?

  • Phaser or something like that.

  • I was there, awsome...

  • theres only 3 instrumentals in metallica career and 3 fuckin amazing instrumentals are good

  • what are the 3

  • The instrumentals are (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth, Call of Ktulu, Orion and To Live Is To Die

  • to live is to die has some speaking in is no, but ehh, maybe

  • suicide and redemption.

  • Surely its just 'Call Of Ktulu', and 'Orion'...because 'to live is to die' has some lyrics...even though they're spoken

  • R.I.P cliff

  • me enoja que el baterista le meta arreglos que no tienen nada que ver con la canción, lo unico que hace es cansarse mas, pero eso no le quitan la exelencia de musicos yea

  • i think hammett is cursed,

    his guitar always fucks up

    on this song.

  • agree haha

  • Orion... So complex yet they make it seem so easy to play , riffts keep shifting. so harmonic and melodic especially different instrumental solos a different moods and diff times and DUO (james-kirk) but i give the Main credit to Master Cliff and God of Metal/Riffts Hetfield... in conclusion... METAL UP WORLD's ass and ALL those hiphop/house loosers!

  • amen

  • Actually, apart from actually playing this song,Orion was all Cliff. Still kick ass and I agree with what your sayin.

  • Where did Kirk run off to two and a half minutes in? Broken string?

  • IMO the best Instrumental ever. Ranking:

    1. Orion

    2. The Call of Ktulu

    3. To Live Is to Die

  • Agreed.

  • Tru,but Rob is good.

    Not good,GREAT!!!

  • It was the full song man, slower section missed? did you see the full video..?

  • the song would actually work a little better if they ended the song on an A chord.

  • Sorry, Your right my Bad. I guess James just looks older.....

  • Yeah, James looks 50 or something... But he was born in 1963, and this is from 2006. 43 years... He looks older... fuck :(

  • respect rob!

  • GREAT job, Rob. Cliff would be proud.

  • Awesome song. But i like the fast parts best ^^

  • Cliiiiiiiiiiff, I wish you were here now xd

  • I knew I love Cliff Burton!!

  • Great song

  • were all these live vids from this guy taken from one of those big screens?

  • yeah. he just zoomed in onto the screen.

  • I'm sure that you know better, so go and teach Metallica how to play Orion

  • SPAMMYWHOSPAM I dont want to be perceived as rude but I couldn't disagree more with your post.

  • lol my ears are fine, I appreciate your opinion but you have to understand that if you come onto a Metallica vidand slate it then a few people are bound to get defensive over their favorite band. Metallica still kick ass.

  • They are getting a little rusty. I am hoping

Rob Trujillo will help them write new material he is younger and more driven.

  • yeah right, he is one year younger than james... THAT makes a huge difference

  • sometimes bands change some stuff live

  • I always said he is great.

Metallica owns everything, I love 'em

  • A new Legend has been born

    Mr. Robert Trujillo!

  • i believe that rob is better than jason, don't forget that he is playing with his fingers and not with a pick, that means that he is great!!!of course cliff was the one for the band,i believe that metallica will never find someone to replace him, cliff rest in peace!!!

  • But he's nothing compared to the allmighty Cliff Burton

  • Rob is so fucking awesome! Jason who?

  • Oops i exedently gave this video 1 star :(

Now i will give this video 5 stars over and over again to compensate ^^

ORION IS A MASTERPIECE! R.I.P. CLIFF BURTON

    METALLICA FTW!

  • Robs awesome but he does not compare to Cliff.

R.I.P Cliff. Cliff was the best ever.

  • Rob must be feelin the love from the croud...

=P.. i used to not like Rob at ALL!. But im gettin used to him and he is really talented.

I guess i didnt like the change from Jason's style to his.. Jason had his chance with the greatest band of all time.. Now its Rob time!

  • Thank you again.

I prefere Robert,he has better stageperformance than Jason.

But hey,you can't compare both bassplayers, they both have excellent techniques and are both outstanding musicians.

    My respect is for both.

And for the person who posted this i salute 2 the!;)

  • Rob is truly an awesome bassist, probably as good as Cliff... but somehow I prefer Jason for Metallica's live acts.

  • Rob couldnt hold a candlestick to Cliff and he knows it. Jason was good,Rob is better,Cliff cleans the floor with either of them.

  • Cliff is the voice of this band I agree but Rob is amazing.Cliff is the man I agree.Jason I can understand disliking.Rob can play his ass off though or they would have never even thought of playing this with him.Jason couldn't do it and that's why they never did this because he sucks

  • Oh yeah u nailed that one Rob is excellent and his style is more like Cliff's style. Cliff Burton left this earth too young only 24 yrs.

  • Exactly thank you

  • NO jason doesnt suck frizz..he is actually a very creative bass player N Great vocalist with sweet stage act... i MEAN COME ON... after 1991-1992 he was the only 1 who KEPT headbanging until day he left! his only disadvantage is, he started played bass with a pick from the beginning as his brother tought him so... but apart from that...i WONT let rob's talent blind me for his money hunger to join metallica.. his "memory WONT remain" with the fans. NO metal Soul...he tries too hard & not natural.

  • Metal Soul???? is necessary an ID for it?And who gives it? You???

  • Metal Soul???? is necessary an ID for it?And who gives it? You???

  • Where's Kirk going?? something with his guitar?? but he's comming back with the same guitar?????

  • he's broken a string, and its not the same guitar.

  • he always changes guitar at this part of orion ;)

  • he didn't come back with the same guitar.. he started playing the song with his oujia, and replaced the guitar with a kh-2 vintgae

  • james i love you, but for the love of christ shave the rat off you face, it got you arrested last week!

not to mention its fucking ugly

  • i was at that show it was amazing orion is the best instrumental song i am sorry for maybe teh mistakes in the words i am a dutch guy:P

  • METALLICA OWN !!! Orion is one of their best songs

  • probably the best instrumental ever made

  • 4:04 jaymz is thinking of cliff

  • robert trujillo rules!!!

  • where goes kirk to at 2,58 ??

    is his guitar broken ?

  • to little shithead before me: rob is far better than jason, so shut up..thank you very much!

  • not a knock against trujillo, he is better than I ever will be, but it looks like he is trying to squeeze out a crap just after his second solo of the song. approx 5:40

  • um he doesnt play james solos live...those are kirk solos

  • why does Kirk play James solo live ?? :S

  • And is it just me or has Kirk become a pretty shitty lead guitar player, at least when he improvises his guitar solos? They seem really messy and they just aren't very interesting. His early stuff used to be absolutely killer, great phrasing and licks.. Now he just seems to have little to no phrasing at all, and it's messy half-shredding with a few bends?

Just a comment, he used to be my favorite guitarist but that crown has since slid off.

  • man come on this performance is great!

    nothing to say about it

and kirk is still the best

  • It's good except for the fact that Kirk seemed to screw up part of the first solo after the bass + harmony guitars part in the middle, and then continued to play a shitty improvised solo. Other than that.. Beautful.

  • TrashMayhem (3 days ago) Marked as spam

what song is rob playing in the beginning? anyone who knows?

It's easy. He just improvise on the Orion's beginning because on the album, you don't hear anything :p

  • basistu' e de cacat!!! miss jason, se simte...lipsa...

  • i would have to say that rob is a pretty good placement for cliff. but cliff would still be a better placement then rob.

man i wish Cliff was still here in metallica =(

  • I'm probably going to get flamed for saying this but rob probably a lil' better than cliff... who is the most overrated bassist in history. cliff's solos were classy and great, make no mistake, but besides that his basslines were not so unique. A bassist's role usually isn't to play leads. When not soloing and using distortion he didn't really stand out at all. Jason's pick sounded better on their thrashier songs too. Just my two cents... Trujillo = best Metallica bassist.

  • what song is rob playing in the beginning? anyone who knows?

  • thats a sick bass guitar... i want it

  • rob fucking owns

  • awsome man!!!!

  • whats with the SI notation?

  • I love Cliff, and always will respect him.

BUT, Rob is a fucking great replacement, they couldn't have found any better! Maybe Myoung, but he's busy... :P hehe;)

  • it looks like james is thinking about cliff....

  • i bet he is! he and james were best friends!;)

  • Rob is a fucking amazing bassist, I'd say just as good as Cliff was. Watch the Hole In The Sky/Iron Man video, prooves how good he is. :)

  • 7.35-7.52 ... kick ass solo

  • yes, one more one more ass kicking from metallica, i hope they have it in them. not so good lately.....

  • tallica for ever

  • God Bless Cliff Burton

  • I was there it was fucking great:)

  • awesome!!!

  • Robert trujillo is good but Cliff Burton is the Master

  • "God Bless Cliff Burton"... this was James word at the end of the show... man he was fucking right.

  • Awesome...

  • Rob does a good job on this, yeah he's no Cliff Burton but it's not his fault we no longer have Cliff. I hope these guys kick ass on their next album, i'd like to see atleast one more kick ass album from them.

  • excellent this is cool

  • I think self improve that didn't work out well ;P

  • Sounds more like improv

  • Does anyone else think Kirk was off-pitch on his solo at 7:21-7:25? His guitar really screeched there. But a great song though; fantastic instrumental.

  • Orion is nice, but I prefer Astronomy.

  • redships:good call, and good ear. its seldom found when kirk screws up live. lol

  • tbh, that wasn't too hard to hear lol

  • orion one of my favorites

  • Metallica RULES! May they last another 30 years.

  • Robert isn't as much of a Die hard Metal Head as Jason was, but he kicks Jasons ass all day in playing the bass, so its 1 step back, 2 steps forard for tallica.

  • Robert > jason. Metallica 2007 > Metallica 2000

  • I couldent agree more

  • It would be a moot point to compare Cliff, Jason and Trujillo. Cliff's a legend, Jason a cocksucker, and Trujillo a great new bassplayer for Metallica, way more Metallica than Jason's ever been, but don't blame Trujillo he's no Cliff. Times have changed since '86...

  • Jason was always on a bad mood something i hated that and was glad that he flee away and i love Robert i thing he´s much better than Jason on the bass

  • they played this live w/ cliff and some bits w/ jason because of respect of cliff he did an alright job but u cannot compete w/ cliff this is def one of my fav songs

  • Probably one of my favorites. Definite in my top 3 metallica songs of all time.

  • Is James wearing a girl's shirt???
