I've had a really bad day & this video really made the last 24 hrs make some sort of sense. I don't know why! I guess I saw what I need to see.Well, whatever! And harlie would be proud!
thanks! i really didn't like synecdoche unfortunately. i loved the soundtrack and some of the ideas within it, but ultimately it felt like a garbled, lesser version of adaptation. i got the impression hoffman's character was a hack who didn't deserve the platform/funding he was getting. defenses of it always seem bizarre to me because everyone admits to not enjoying the actual experience of watching the movie. only thinking about it afterwards. which to me is the mark of failure with noble aims.
I actually enjoyed watching some parts of synecdoche that were sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes intriguing and sometimes really funny. But I know what you are talking about... there were points in my first viewing that I thought the movie was bad, or that it is going to poor places... But it still got me in the end. It somehow came together for me, and was alot more enjoyable in the next viewings, as well as thinking about it. Charlie made another very good movie in my opinion. and different.
NOTE: i have since rewatched synecdoche and i was wrong. well.. i still think cotard's a hack but the reasons behind him being a hack are far more profound than i gave the movie credit for. silly me, doubting kaufman.
thank you. that's a really difficult question. number 1 has to be eternal sunshine, and number 4 has to be confessions, but the battle for second place between adaptation and bjm is like.. i'd feel like i was picking a favourite child if i chose one. i think they're genuinely tied despite being very different in many ways.
hmmm havnt seen confessions...gotta put it on my must see list, there's a movie called "cold soul" and from the trailer it looks like a cross between eternal sunshine ans being john should be interesting to watch :)
Thats amazing!! I really didn't expect that to be that good. Made me cry. out of one of my eyes. thats weird, but irrelevant... Beautiful!!! I LOVE Charlie, I LOVE all his films, and now I kinda love you. shame that Synecdoche could not be included but hooray for putting the beautiful soundtrack. But what bothers me is no Human Nature!! why? I really feel bad for how much this film is being underrated and getting ignored! it has many flaws but its brave and incredibly deep as any Kaufman movie!
wow thank you! i personally don't get human nature but i'll have to give it another chance. i've heard that a lot since i made this. who knows, maybe i'll have to post an amended version.
for me it's actually Being John Malkovich, which I think is very nice but I don't connect to it as much as any other Kaufman film.
As to Human Nature, I think the movie is even underrating itself! It doesn't completely use the full strength of the plot and characters, making them sometimes a bit too cartoonish. But by just watching Lila shave herself with self-loathing, bleeding and crying, makes me appreciate how much this movie is brave, under all its silliness. and it's very smart:P
4:29 - 4:32 is my favorite part of this video because it reminded me of how glad I was when watching it in Eternal Sunshine, to see that someone finally captured on film how that feels (when your friends and peers say "at least you have the memory", but you know that memory will never be enough). And on the point of "capturing meaning in film", that's exactly what you've done here. I've been looking for a Kaufman tribute, and let me tell you, you just nailed it. The smartest tribute video ever.
Well, that compliment is very well deserving. This video obviously took a lot of time, care and attention because it's much more than just action shots set to a soundtrack.
Also, you've probably been getting a lot of credit for adding Synecdoche by way of the music of it's soundtrack. Well, I'm not sure if it was your original intention or just some happy accident, but the whole point and moral of that film is intact here too (it may just be a hidden moral of all of Kaufman's films...) that all humans are pretty much the same, in that we are all playing the part of "me" in life to become a person through successes AND failures so we can obtain our own living lives.
i definitely saw those themes in his stuff beforehand, but the process of making this surprised me as far as how deeply infused they really are. that being said i think it's hard to escape these kinds of ideas in any good film. i'm sure you could play this song under clips from richie rich and they would sync up emotionally.
you forgot human nature

I like the initial focus on dialogue - considering he's a screenwriter.
& after that - really beautiful, man. it's hard to cut to a slow song & you nailed it.
great job
