O.O According to Wikipedia, that thing is called a Carrion and its suppose to symbolize Travis' pity for the roadkill he has seen.

Probably because animals that have been hit by a car and are still alive have been paralyzed and limp around on the road looking for safety. To me this monster looks like a deer that's lost most of it's upper body strength which is probably why it attacks with it's swollen body.

I have a feeling that they resemble the animals that Travis ran over, or saw on the road when he was passing by. That's why it's upper body looks flattened.
