John's brilliance is easy to miss. If you listen to him a lot , you'll find he is a very sophisticated player. His rhythmic and harmonic concept is amazing.

John Abercrombie is hands down one of the best jazz guitarists, innovators and composers today. It was special seeing him play with Ralph Towner in NY in 1973.
Abercrombie is a great player and I love things of his I have heard in the past, but I didn't like this performance. I thought he wasn't focused and the piece didn't add up to much despite the best efforts of the organ player riding to the rescue during his break. Unfortunately the recording quality is very bad and not aimed at the organ at all. Abercrombie can do and has done wonderful things before, but not for me, this time.
@litreacola hay Chad, have you checked out the J Abercrombie mix in the suggestions list ? there´s the beatles cover, tracks from "timeless", Parable. Then there are the albums he´s recorded with Ralf Towner
i wouldn´t say this performance was wretched... but it does lack soul
hope you find something you like, ...cool hendrix cover btw
if you are a musician you play according to your talent and as you practise you gain a better tequnique to fulfill your talent ,with that in mind mr holdwoth had a very unique talent and his succes was stamped on almost every project he took but musicaly speaking we can't say he is the best , listen to timeless album by John Abercrombie that is a phenomenal work right there but we still can't say he is the best, they are musicians with abilities and diffrent colors of talent and beauty ,
even was lucky to've seen Wes live BUT guys like Abercrombie play with equal feel & dexterity. J.A, Frisell, and many "outside-the-box" players can play standards like Burrell when called upon. In jazz there's space for ANY style. For me, the main thing is FEEL and John has great feel.
So funny, love to hear musicians argue about who's "better" ! etc...
Nothing personal, but... should probably shut up and go practice and write and record and maybe some other musicians will argue about you and your music!

I can see that old school way of thinking as pertaining to jazz guitarists because no one playing today is as good as Wes montgomery, joe pass, Tal farlow, kenny burrell, django reinhardt, Jim hall(he still is) etc. And i love a lot of players from the last 35 years.there's just no substitute for the original. That's hard for me to say because i'm a guitar player who's still trying to move the music forward.
I have this wonderful friend in SLC, a decent guitar player (state-class you might say). He hates JA, he hates Metheny, Scofield, Rypdal. Some guys cling to the past: he loves Kessel, tolerates Chuck Wayne - you get the picture. I got acquainted with Abercrombie thru his work in the 80's with Richie Beirach and he's been one of my guys since then. Nice to know I'm not alone!
I love John's soft attack. Pick noise is something I've been trying to deal with. A thumbpick is a great compromise. It opens up some interval, arpeggio, and chord-voicing options while allowing you to brace with your index finger and use it like a flat-pick.
what song is this? ..anyone?

I find his tone to be wretched and inhuman.
Don't wanna be a debbie downer but this music sounds lifeless.
The organist is compounding the problem.
This is my first time ever listening to john abercrombie. He was recommended
to me. Anyone have any recommendations for a better performance

Expressivity, imagination and comprehensibility is the proper calling.

You got it wrong. The perfection and quality off music is not a solid bar where you can reach a peak. its a constant search

I'm not trying to disrespect but i think his guitar is a little out of tune at the start, just a little bit. Beautiful playing though

Je pense que Abercrombie et McLaughlin sont les plus grands guitaristes de toutes les temps, chacun en son style.
