Good but extremely limited. You would be better off get a DX7 MK2 it can do all these sounds and sounds even a CS80 couldnt dream of. If you think I am talking hot air check out my demo TIME TRAVELLER in February. And you will hear a DX7 MK2 like you never have.
@gavincurtis I got offered a SY2 to trade against my MS20, but I think, I will miss the flexability of the Korg, otherwise, the MS20 is always avaiable, the SY2 appears extrem rarely...
The CS-80 makes my wallet fit impossibly thin, thank you :)
These older analog sound circuits will become popular again. Don't know what it should sell for. Many great paintings are lost in attics. Electronic circuits are not much different than the paint from the artist.
This was one of the first keyboards to feature aftertouch sensitivity, and if you look carefully on the video you can see how the aftertouch works: The keyboard itself floats on a rack which contains a potentiometer. Applying pressure to the keyboard operates this potentiometer.
-keyboard are those black and white keys. if an instrument has a keyboard: synth, piano, organ, harpsichord etc. you can call it keyboard instrument.
-synthesizer on the other hand is an electronic device that makes sounds. most synths have a keyboard but not all f.ex some of the buchla synths and of course the first ever synth: theremin.
I think term keyboard might have been coined in the 80's, when Casio and Yamaha flooded the market with consumer home keyboard instruments with auto rhythms and preset sounds. I'd say that a synthesizer definitely allows for shaping the sounds to your own liking, as opposed to having preset sounds only. Synthesizers are usually geared towards professionals, who need more control over the sound, whereas keyboards that don't allow sound editing, are gearted more towards amateurs.
This is AWESOME, sound just like Vangelis, are these hard to get today?, it looks like this are the cheap way to somewhat the same sound as an CS-80, so me want one badly
Wonderful sounding instrument, that. I see the aftertouch on yours is working well.
I have two of them, on one the aftertouch doesn't work at all and on the other it only works partially. They still sound incredible when played in unison as a single monosynth.
I can't comment for stephenteller, but in general SY-2s are cheap because hardly anyone knows about them. I bought my two for less than the price of a single monophonic CS instrument (CS-5/10) and they sound vastly better than those.

From what I've gathered, a keyboard plays sounds that it has stored inside of itself when you hit a key. You can't edit those sounds in a keyboard.
In a synthesizer, the sounds are created. You start out with a waveform, and then you put it through a variety of filters and modulations.
However, these terms have been thrown around a distorted so much these days that it's impossible to tell what a keyboard does from the name of it.

They pop up every so often. They are still pretty rare- but definitely cheaper, (and lighter!) than the CS 80.

is that reverb already in the keyboard or is it going through a filter
masterman321 3 years ago
The SY-2 is going through external reverb and delay. Thanks!
