I'nm glad that the coaches can argue in baeball it makes the game a lot more fun. ( I coach and have been ejected before) The umpire has to defend his position. But as a coach it is our job to defend our players. But don't cross the line.
@spooff4life That our local rule I have to give that amount of time. Trust me sometimes I would like to tell if they don't leave in 10 secounds but I can't.
Eh, that was a little weak, tossing the guy after only a few seconds of discussing a call. Unless he said something that was just outrageous which I couldn't her.
haha! thats my sister's step-dad. hes a great guy. funny seeing him being an ump, he's a pretty intellectual guy. short man syndrome?... nah hes pretty confident for his height. but how often does one get to throw out a coach? got to spice it up.. lol
That is my opinion on ejections. Toss them and let them know it so there is no doubt in anyone's mind. You sell a close out or safe call. You sell a close strike call. Sell the ejection. Let them know you have no doubts about getting rid of the offender.
I agree with you 100% about the vocalization. I officiate football games, and it is a necesity for us to vocalize when we toss a player or coach. Embarrassment also kicks in for the coach.
He can have the best game of his life. But, if the close ones go against one team, then he will be made the center of attention if that team wants to argue the calls. I like the vocalization of the ejection b/c it leaves no doubt in the person's mind they were ejected. If you eject a player on a close play and don't vocalize it, he will not know he is gone and no one else will. They are too busy watching the play to see you eject him. Remember, we are invisible. Vocalize it like any other call.
Why is it all think the umpire is invisible on the field? We are very visible and in stressful situations like this, we are made the center of attention. I don't care if he would have just signaled it. I have seen plenty where it is just signaled and the coach comes running onto the field to make the umpire the center of attention. We are as visible as any player when it comes to a rule call, close judgment call, or ejection. A good game is not one when an umpire goes through a game unnoticed.
The proper ejection "mechanic" is to do an overhanded throwing motion with the right hand with one finger pointed out without any vocalization of any kind.
Agreed. Never, ever, say anything when ejecting someone, be they player or manager. They'll know what's happening, saying something cute will simply make the situation worse.
Asshole coach, my father coached little league and got tossed one time for pulling the same bullshit... it is just a fucking game and it is for the KIDS not the adults..
Yeah I dont doubt that this coach shoulda got tossed...but IMO that was a little quick. Its the umps responsibility to listen what the coaches have to say...except on balls and strikes...
That was a great toss!!! As an umpire, you only get a few chances to show off your skills. Very very classic!!! I prefer the point, and the 180 degree throw that way I can still see the expression personally.
although the coach prob deserved it, the ump doesnt have to act all cool when he throws him out. I've thrown enough coaches out and there has never been a time when I try to make it a show. Throw him out and move on with it.
Not to undermind the umpire but that was a really quick ejection. The umpire seemed like he was doing that cause he felt like he wanted to give the old "heave ho" to someone
I will say this... while the book says any umpire can call time... Calling time on behalf of the batter as the BASE umpire is a no-no. The plate umpire should be the only one granting time to a batter. It could be that the plate umpire thought the batter called it too late or he called it excessively and was not granting it for a reason. I think the coach had a valid argument. However, the coach did not approach the umpire professionally, so he deserved to get tossed.
Critter - go read a baseball umpire memchanics manual. Each umpire is assigned designated areas that they are sponsible for. Otherwise you are going to have the base umpire calling safe and out for plays at 2nd with the base umpire standing right on top of the play! Again - you just showed you know nothing about being an umpire, because rule books are not going to tell you which umpires can do what, that is what mechanics manuals are for.
I think it's kind of funny how you say, "Otherwise you are going to have the base umpire calling safe and out for plays at 2nd with the base umpire standing right on top of the play!"
Whatever you may think, the coach showed poor judegement by arguing something like calling time, which all umpires have concurrent jurisdiction.
Cadzilla, what exactly are your credentials on knowing what is good or poor judgement concerning baseball rules? How many times have you even looked at an official rule book? Both of those umpires most likley have been officiating baseball significantly longer than you have been alive.
Bluesteve, I checked the baseball rule book and under rule 9.02 it says that the umpire behind the pitchers mound shouldn't use bad judgment and call timeout when the umpire behind the plate clearly sees the batter calling timeout way to late and refuses to give it to him
9.02 says no such thing. 9.02 deals with judgement calls as being final, no arguing balls and strikes, appealing to the crew if the ruling may be in confict with the rules, only umpires making the call can ask for help, or no umpires may be replaced during a game unless injured or ill.
Besides, were you using OBR (Official Baseball Rules), FED (high school) or NCAA rules? If this was a summer league game OBR is what want.
Try reading 9.04b(2) in OBR, 10-3-1 in FED,or 3-8-a in NCAA.
The ump should have been replaced from the game because he was mentally "ill" that afternoon by calling time from behind the mound for the batter. Nevertheless, I've never seen such a sweet and energetic tossing of a coach - so props to the blue for the "you - you - you are gone!" He must have been practicing his coach tossing at home the night before after watching YouTube videos of fellow umps ejecting angry coaches.
okay an umpire can call time when he wants but the batter called time way to late and the ump behind the pitcher completely bailed him out for no apparent reason. the umpire behind the plate did not give the batter timeout and the umpire behind the mound used terrible judgment. the coach was right for arguing this
he was upset because the umpire behind the mound called timeout for the batter when that should be the plate umpires call. the batter took a strike but the umpire behind the mound said he called timeout before the pitch.
The coach, right or wrong should know you cant argue balls and strikes no matter who he thinks messed up. Yes, usually the plate umpire calls time. Im guessing SOMETHING mustve happened for the Base guy to call it. Maybe he saw the batter calling time, and the plate guy didnt. Seems the coach needs to pick his battles a little better. Yeah, ask about what happened, but to go out to the mound to argue? Hes asking to be ran.
Sorry. I meant to press thumbs up. Any official can call time at any time. The coach may not like it, but it is what it is. He would be arguing the other way if it were ball four.
Gee, someone complaining about a play, and calling it a bad call. Guess it went against your team huh? Just because some play was close, or a ruling went against your team, doesnt mean it was a bad call. So, what was the play, what happened?
Chuck, the base ump called "time" when the batter requested after a delay. The coach came out to argue that only the plate guy can call time. This was already after a coach was ejected.
