Emily: My students are having trouble luring their small dogs (pugs, maltese, etc) into a down. What methods do you recommend for very small dogs for this? Capturing and then click/treat? (That's what I'm recommending so far, but in our very distracting class environment, my students are having trouble with this).
Thanks Emily. Great timing. I just adquired a new weimaraner pup. I am looking forward to your show. I really appreciate your guilt free techniques. I believe you hit it right on the nail. My pup just turn 8 weeks and he's doing some of your tricks already. He just started barking when he's left alone, so I am hoping to see something related. Once again thank you
We adopted a yellow lab mom and one of her puppies. Working on leash training the mom, Tilly, who pulls on-leash. After viewing numerous training videos, like the kikopup the best. Subscribed to YouTube to get it.
I'm a huge fan, Emily. I'd love to see Dogmatics cover: Barking at People Walking By when inside and outside the house, How to Take a Treat gently and calmly (upping the treat quality brought lunging for the treat), Greeting VIsitors when they come to the Door (I have her stay but she isn't calm and rushes to them as soon as I release her), Walking with Friends with ill-behaved dogs (Is it ok to request mine heel when the friend's dog isn't?),
Nice job on exposing a great way to work with your dog. Learning theory and clicker training are essential to teaching a dog who will enjoy learning! I just start posting some basic videos as well good luck!
when you come home and mickey mouse is greeting you...you are in Disney Land.....It is so easy to train an animal with food....that is the teaching stage...right. please be aware when you tell people who do not have your skills or awareness of animals that this is the only way to train....you will end up sending so many dogs to the shelter to be killed....To be honest I'm just glad your not on villageidiots page....you are good
I can't wait to see these new videos! Ive started to retrain my dogs with clicker training. They are successfully trained with the old choke collar method. "successfully" isn't as good I would like it though.Their heeling is very good. however nothing like constant eye contact heeling backwards and doing turns like splash! I started on the under heeling and doing turns. Amazing how i get constant eye contact. No stress signals! I was recently certified by a dog training school in NY.
The trainer who taught the class used old school methods. He mocked clicker training and showed us a horrible video on it. ever since then I have had the same feeling about it that he does. It doesn't work unless you have food nonstop..ect ect.. Thanks for posting these videos and convincing me that clicker is the way to go! I'm sure my dogs appreciate it too! I'll be sure to get some videos up to show the difference. I have one up now with my cattle dog doing a very reluctant leash less heel
Do you think these same methods could be used for a horse? I have been wanting to find good "free" videos with step-by-step clicker methodology. You have good ones.
Hi Emily. I discovered your videos this afternoon and have done little else since then (it's now 9.30 pm here), apart from walk my dog and have a couple of short training sessions. I've been clicker training for a while now and have recently begun freestyle so am delighted with your videos. Brilliant! More please!
Hi, I found your videos while looking for a tutorial on how to click train my Toy Poodle. I love how you perfectly explain step by step everything. I started a week ago and I am so happy to see how my dog learns. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Thank You for your great work! My wife and I just brought a Nova Scotia Retriever into our house and were recommended to watch your videos. Wow. Keep it up, we are learning alot!
I love watching your videos! I have two dogs ( Yorkie and a Shorkie) and I am excited to train them. A lot of videos don't show you how to do the tricks step by step like you do.
Thanks so much. I'll be looking for your show (Dogmantics!)
@barrysoap: Clickers are used in zoos to make wild animals cooperate with caretaking activities such as nailtrimming. ...Can't imagine a check chain on an elephant to get it to raise a leg ...lol
I LOVE that small clip of the black dog getting back up when forced to sit.... I just kept shaking my head saying "YUP~!" I never used to notice that stuff until I got really into PR training. Its everywhere... that and "sitsitsitsit"
Hi Emily, happened upon your 'station' as I am into clicker training but can't always figure out how to start the trianing...I'm gonna try the 'shaking your head'. What was your q for the behaviour once you named it? Philippa in Victoria BC Canada
Kiko YOu are amazing I want to learn these lessons My daughter gets mad when I try to show her to proper way. I explain that it is a little work but it will pay off in the end. YOur dogs are amazing
I have a 10 week old Border Collie and I just took him to the humane society to get his second round of puppy shots and he got to show his vet how he could sit, lay down and roll over and she was simply AMAZED and said she has never seen such a young dog know how to do these things. I of course told her about your training methods... I am so excited for Dogmantics, I can't wait to see what more you have to teach us! Thank you!!!
You are such a great inspiration for me, I now have 2 aussies, puppies soon. I love what you do. "Be creative" is the mantra KEEP the show going. btw: isnt it about time you sell a DVD plus book and make some money from your great efforts. You are damned good at this.
Emily, GREAT look forward to your show!! Love everything you do -- keep it up!
Do you have any thoughts on how to stop car lunging? Our 4 months old German Shepherd puppy is bad at it -- we tried lots of things including clicking and treating when he doesn't do it, blocking, putting him into sit, etc.
But when he locks unto the car -- this is hiw only focus...
4 months. Yes, good to nip that in the bud asap! Go to a place where he can see cars from a distance, and not react, perhaps a field, feed the dog a treat as he SEES the car (or click and feed a treat), then move closer and closer gradually, until you are at the road with the cars passing (this might happen in a couple of lessons).
I like your videos. =) I've just started to train "leave it" (but in Swedish) with my little Australian shepherd-puppy and hope to succeed. I would really like tips on how to especially train puppies. =) To become well mannered grown ups.
I'm looking forward for that " teach your dog an interrupter cue to stop them doing unwanted things (without seeming like the bad guy)". Can't really think of an idea about teaching my dog house manners without corrections.
i'd like to second nelliemarsh's comment on training with more than one dog at a time. My three are together a lot, and it would be really nice ( i'm lazy) if i could work them together instead of isolating two and working with only one at a time.
Dogmantics is a great idea, and you have real talent in this area. Next stop.....NatGeo!
I'd love a video on how to train one dog with the other waiting patiently for her turn, like Kiko and Splash. Most amazing! You said yours have different preferences, one loves toys and one works for treats, I guess this helps a bit. My bulldogs are sooo greedy (probably only surpassed by Beagles), and so eager to work, they just won't stay calm and relaxed when they hear the clicker or know the other gets a treat. I always train one away from the other but the way you three do it is much nicer!
Hi Emily i always love to watch you and your dogs working they look so happy. Oh how i wish i could do all you can do but i am in a wheelchair so can not move with my dogs like most people can and this i find hard in getting the same thing going at times, but you help me to hang in there with what i can do
You can think of fun games to play, your dogs won't know any different. :) I think that is why I love dogs so much!
The key is the constant search for reinforcers that flip their lid I think. Kiko is a hard case! Very picky, Splash will take anything as a reward- her favorite bouncing a balloon in the air.
Hi Emily, Shylah can wave, sit, down, stand, goes round my wheelchair, put his front paws on me and i go backwards now showing him to but his paws on my shoulders, and walk with me from behind, he goes jumps through a hoop.
the two shelties i need help with both dogs . Tuts has just learnt down but she will not come out of it . Dee B he is so excited click click please just click.
Wow, can't wait. Your videos inspired me to clicker train my two 8 month old papillons. There are no clicker trainers in my area. Books are great (and I have plenty), but so much nicer to see it in action. How wonderful of you to provide such a great service to those of us wanting a fun and positive way to train our dogs!!!
Hi Emily! Im so excited about your new venture with 'Dogmantics' I love your work, your methods and how you help others to help themselves and their dogs. Good Job Girlie, you rock! Love Yvonne xx
Love your methods and how you perpetuate kindness! My dog is very sensitive, so kindness is the only way that works for us. I hope your show goes mainstream. Question: Can u tell me how to get my border collie to "hold" things in his mouth?
You give great clear starts on how to teach so many things, but I think the average dog owner is going to have a harder time getting training solid enough to take it to the real world and managing bad behavior than "trainers". Your loose leash video, for ex. , is not going to be successful for 90 % of dogs who become aroused when they see another dog, or want to smell everything & how do you fade giving treats on the walk so that is becomes a default behavior? I am excited to see your show!!!
Even more so for owners to be screwing up with treats rather than + punishment. The leash walking video is just one game to play, there are a multitude of exercises to do for arousal over other dogs and stimuli, but thats another video. The treats are just for conditioning- building value to being in that spot if you want the dog to walk there off leash, the real reinforcement is: moving forwards, so you don't have to ween off of the reinforcement which is moving forwards.
For those interested- for aroused or distracted dogs on walks here's a great book - Scaredy Dog by Ali Brown and Control Unleashed. 'My Dog Pulls: What do I do?' by Turid Rugaas is great if you want to train leashwalking w/out food - Basically put: STOP when your dog pulls!(and/or backup)- in two weeks your dog will stop pulling. In my show I will be going over how to build calmness, how to work with reactive dogs. Splash and Kiko never get treats for LLW and they both used to be reactive
Fun? or Relaxing? I would practice a 'settle' inside the crate, so when in the crate- the best thing to do is settle. If you use the crate for exercises, you could have one for settling and the other for active games.
We, too, can't wait! I love all your videos, it's so nice to see Splash grow up in them. They're a great source of inspiration and made me stop visiting "normal" dog classes! My youngest girl, Audrey (5mths) learned to lie down at my feet in our vet's waiting room the evening after I watched your video- as we had to wait there anyway I thought I might just try it. The result was simply amazing- in spite of all the distractions there! Thanks a million for all your time and work and dedication. N.
Thank you for providing this. I am really gonna need it since I am bringing home my new 4 month old lab puppy, Zoey, Tuesday from the Austin Humane Society. I am definitely considering clicker training with her. Thank you again.
Oh, wow! I can't wait to see the show, now that I have a dog!
Her name is Pixel, and she's a Sable Border Collie ^.^
I'm sure we could use some of your tips for this. Do you think Animal Planet would even host your show someday? you're better than Victoria Holmes in my book.
Thanks Emily, how generous of you, much appreciated. I love your videos and never fail to learn, so much that I don't want to train a new behavior until I've seen "How Emily does it"!
Let's see, can we audition for a spot? Miya's role will be - How to teach your dog to stop chasing small woodland creatures. She could definitely use the Emily touch with this one.
oh wow this sounds great!! please can you teach me how to do a focused heel in any conditions! my dog would rather focus on birds, and could u show me a realiable recall. i would be so grateful!
How about a video explaining how to teach your dog correct distance control for Obedience without moving hind feet. Like Splash does it in the video =)
i have tryed alot of stuff to get my dogs in to frissbee i can't seem to get it right can you maybe show me a way to do it.
