  • Your video is a favorite on Namibia

  • @reggielittle25 What's Namibia?

  • I am around the odd section of Youtube once again.

  • AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH DONE !

  • i have got one humungus problem ... when i go to the terminal ... i write something ... sudo bla bla bla ... and it asks me my password ... and ... it doest let me write it ... it just stands there blinking ... and i write and nothing apears .... and then ipress enter and it asks me the password again ... fff damn it - - ... im kinda new to linux and i would like to know what i am doing wrong

  • @almor619 LOL, you wont see any characters when you type a password. It's like that for a reason, SECURITY. What if someone counted the number of chars in your password and with that information, easily guessed the password you used for your linux box?

  • @omgitsmit you are right and it makes sense ! thanks ;)

  • @santosmrclo Credits to the artists are at the end of each of my videos!

  • Where do you download the desktop backgrounds?

  • @Lolla1995 Pretty much anywhere on the internet. Google is your friend ;)

  • use the palm web os fonts instead they look great on ubuntu

  • Try Konversation irc client. It's for KDE but still a good program.

  • @Xe054 irssi is for the 1337 ;)

  • how can i get my wifi bar back i removed it =P

  • how to do you type the words on screen what u use pls tell me.. If u tell me i subscribe and rate 4/5 stars.. :p

  • Just Awesome! Customized my new ubuntu install with many of the same stuff you did. I'm new to ubuntu and so far it's awesome!

  • How do I uninstall it? I mean it's really good, but I want to try something different. But if I change the theme, the bars and everything remain as they were. Please help. :)

  • @aaaa55111 Uninstall what exactly? This video is just about customization. Just change everything back the way it was. I guess you could follow the tutorial backwards, lol.

Not sure what your theme issue is about, did you install your video card drivers? It sounds like it's having trouble with advanced desktop effects.

    Good luck!

  • I cannot load Indicator monitor , it allway says '' command not found'' . What's the problem '

  • @SyneuLig You should follow the text version over at my blog. I think i used the wrong command in the video.

  • Well, this video is really amazing. I won't be using that theme because I prefer light ones, but it's a great reference for Ubuntu apps and settings. Liked, fav'd, and keep on making new Linux videos, they're great!

  • @Blekwave Thanks for subscribing! I still need more views/subbers so i can continue to make videos!

  • Awesome video!! Keep up the good work!

  • @blacksiddis Thanks! :D

  • Is it possible to separate say a Chrome application launcher from running programs that don't have a launcher on the awn dock? I cannot get them from bunching all together.

  • @nova2wl Yes you can add custom launchers to AWN. Right click anywhere on the AWN dock (except on the icons) and go to Dock Preferences. Click on the Task Manager tab and then "Add" at the bottom. You can type what you want executed as well as choose what icon you want to use to represent the program.

  • Have i got this right @2.56secs in the video?

    timashley.me/files/divergence_mega_pack_by_jurialmunkey-d301oik.zip:No such file or directory

Had to take away the start of the path because i couldn't submit the comment.

I also noticed where you choose the font Cousine and a style of Regular but i only have BOLD and BOLD Italic to choose from. Am i missing something?

I just installed 10.10 and my eyes are really struggling with this font.

  • @Andy1974ification Sorry! It looks like you got a "File not found" when trying to download the theme pack! I'll put the file back up on my web server here shortly, thanks for pointing it out!

  • great video thanks :)

  • @aelgali No problem! More to come :)

  • can you do one for kubuntu please?

  • @Jamaica4Lyphe I haven't had much experience with Kubuntu, but i'll install it on my laptop and see what i can do for customization. Thanks for subscribing!

  • @Jamaica4Lyphe Just an update, i have Kubuntu 10.10 32bit downloaded and i plan on installing it on my laptop this week. Expect a video to be released here in about 3 weeks or so.

  • sudo apt-get install yakuake to complete ;P

  • @Virus0style Ctrl-Alt-T brings up a gnome-terminal at any moment in non KDE environments. Also, i prefer the nice transparent terminal that AWN dock comes with. I may have to check this out for my next "Perfect Desktop" video since i've gotten some requests to do a KDE version. Thanks for sharing this!

  • Niiiiiice

  • Could you post the tracks used in this video, please?

  • @gombost Rivers become oceans, Everything is alright and Parks. All performed by Four tet. If you watch the entire video, i give credit to the artist in each of my tutorials.

  • @omgitsmit

I stopped it before the credit, lol :)

  • love the new video, tim -- be sure to use the admin features via our facebook group in order to send out the link to all members -- they'd sure enjoy your new tutorial ;)

  • Hello

I installed the divergence theme pack and liked the icon theme. But the problem I am having is when I click on "Places" I see no icons for Documents, Pictures, Videos and Downloads. Instead, I see red coloured cross marks as icons. And when I open file browser, I see folder icons as text file icons. Whats wrong?

  • @kickassjatt Yeah mine recently broke as well. I switched back to another icon theme in the meantime. Not really sure what happened :/

  • @omgitsmit Hey thanks for the reply. Can you suggest me another icon theme. I have put Faenza on for now!

  • i love u :) linux rulz

  • @sale666 Yay!

  • @omgitsmit

@gombost <---What he posted. Your videos are awesome and informative. You also share a very similar taste in music with me. It would be awesome if you added the track listing in your video descriptions.

  • Google font change is dumb...sorry mit.

  • @MrJosiahT To each their own. This video is just showing what the first things i do to my fresh Ubuntu Desktop installation on 10.10. Viewers are to take what they like from it and add on top of it. This demonstrates how customizable a Linux desktop environment can really be. Oh, and i'm a google whore. :)

  • @omgitsmit Well I can agree with you on all things Google. Do they ever do anything wrong? I'd love to work there someday.

  • Where's the startup folder located and can you stick other apps in it? 1:05

  • @MrJosiahT If you really want a folder based method (like Windows) you can add items at:

    /home/username/.config/autostart

In your home directory press CTRL+H to show hidden folders. Open .config and autostart folders. Drop any items you want in there and they should start on next login.

  • Hi Tim

I have a question - i want to make a can-do-all box for all my computing needs. I want to install XBMC, EMC2, makemkv and then some server-applications - that is in addition to following your guide here. I was wondering if i should go for 10.10 or 10.04 LTS? - have you tried installing any of these programs and do you think it will be easy for a novice? - I have Fedora 12 /w amahi, and my makefile for XBMC makes an error so i cannot install. Wondering if Ubuntu is better for me.

  • @Anima87 I have tried out XBMC on "Linux Media Center" distributions, but personally i would just rather install Ubuntu Desktop and overlay Boxee on top of it for my living room media center. You should really check out the new Ubuntu Server 10.10 video im making. Should be up in a couple weeks. It's basically a media center server. Subscribe and you wont have to worry about checking back!

  • @omgitsmit Sounds good - i would like to request automatic backup of windows-pcs, bittorrent client, remote desktop like teamviewer so i can control it from my windows laptop. I may return and tell how things go once you have finished your video.

And btw, i have been a suscriber for months ! :)

  • @Anima87 Thanks for the support! I need as many subscribers as possible so i can make more videos with youtube.

I'm already doing a automated backup of my linux boxes to my LAN server. As for a Bit-torrent client, i also use my server for this. I can log into TorrentFlux running on my server to queue and manage my downloads from anywhere (Web Interface), but if you're looking for a GUI, the built in Torrent app 'Transmission' gets the job done. Remote desktop is already built into Ubuntu Linux

  • @omgitsmit Hi Tim

How are things? - still looking forward to a guide in turning my hardware into a server :)

You should look into Greyhole. I hear it's the new thing for 2010, where MSS "Fail" has left off. A short list of things i hope you can include are:

    Greyhole

    Crashplan

    Webmin

    Torrentflux

That would be very awesome. Have a nice christmas!

  • This is the reason why I wanna shift`del my Windows folder. Cheers mate.

  • @CehashyNorador Thanks! I actually run Windows in a VM for propriortery applications and hardware (i.e. itunes for updating my ipod touch).
