two questions just come to my mind. do they learn these phonics in school during therere 6-8 year-old? do they really speak the 'y' s, when they talk them? the 'y' sound has almost the same an 'i-e' sound, though i understand that the 'y' is a consonant and the 'i-e' are short vowels.
@roygbiv330 Hello, yes, most countries now do start with phonics in the first grade. The "sky" version of "y" is what's called an "alternative reading" you (usually) learn these after the first sounds.
This song is just a review of the basic sounds, mainly to get away from the "Ay, Bee, See" names, but you can find all the sounds and letters on the website!
my daughter is 2 and she is reading after witching this video for six months. She comprehends the sound of certain letters now, and anything she can't pronounce she just asks me.
I have to admit this put a smile on my face, but he really does have other amazing videos that are completely different! Especially the videos where he's in Japan showing cool things and speaking Nihongo ;)
hmm.... about learning to read quicker by teaching phonetics first, what about the two sounds of some of the letters? that is, the hard sounds and the soft sounds, where C is See and Ke. With this in mind, isn't it better to teach the orthodox way so students can be made aware of both sounds of some of the letters? Just a thought. Interested in hearing your own thoughts/ideas on the matter. Keep up the good work though. Making learning fun is the best way to teach.
@HigherAffiliations You do these afterwards along with sh, ch, th etc. But even without them you can still read approx 80% of English, which is much better than "Ay, bee, see" as there they can't actually read anything.
Using the song kids can get the sounds pretty easily, but the real skill, and the hard one, is learning to blend the sounds together, which you have to use other techniques like we discuss on the site.
? Well that covers their sounds but it's way more complicated than that. Also, we didn't learn their names. What happened to the ABC song. Ai Bee, Cee, Dee, Ea, Ef, Gee... Now I know my ABCs
Learning the Ay Bee Sees before learning phonics really slows done the speed at which you can learn to read. The letter names come in later when you need to do non-phonetic spelling.
@GenkiJapanNet i agree with genki. there are plenty of abc songs on the market and available everywhere. but these do not teach kids to read. and yes, it is way more complicated than that, this is called a starting point. i wouldnt display this video for students doing a bachelor in literature, but i would, and will, show it to my kindy kids who i am teaching in Thailand, you bell end.
No "Double You" is the letter name, which is what you learn in the traditional abc song. Here we have the sound it makes, which is what helps children to read much faster.
after viewing this vid I'd have to say that english has to be one of the hardest languages to learn. But I knew that already. The names of the letters don't really help you all that well with the pronunciation
@rphinks Yeah, I agree with you. Especially the name of "H" ("aitch") doesn't give you a single clue about that the letter should be pronounced like a breath.
This has a catchy rhythm which I'm sure appeals to kids. It's a well-known fact that the brain enjoys and adheres to rhythm and rhyme. The visual is also important - I'm assuming the teachers put this to some kind of movement. It certainly lends itself to that as well. Getting the body fully involved in the learning process is especially important in reading education. Teachers need to being to apply the brain research into their chosen methodologies.
For those of you thinking "ergh, what are these sounds?" then have a read of the info box top right. I guess if you haven't grown up with phonics it could sound a little strange, but just keep with it because it really makes a huge difference to how quickly kids learn to read!
Other people have also mentioned about the speed. One of our mottoes is "Not tested on animals - tested on kids". We did different versions and this was the most popular with the kids! We have slower versions, including one on CD7, but the kids tend to get bored with those and prefer the fast ones!
It's not designed as a first introduction to phonics, it's designed as a review after you've done a bit of Jolly Phonics or whatever method you use.
my son is learning phonics in kindergarten and i need to revise with him at home. but i have no idea how. can anyone tell me how in the easiest way? thank you.
Have a look at the games on the "Genki Phonics" website, they're very popular with the kids.
Or you could try some alphabet cards, just spread them on the floor shout out a word and see who is the first to pick up the card that has the sound that starts the word.
The trick is to only use the sounds and not the letter names, but it's quite easy once you get the hand of it!
don't forget as well there are actually 24 consonant sounds and 14 vowel sounds in the english language. Thiis only covers the short vowels and single consonants. add in long vowels and dipthongs and blends and you are covered.
Not sure this would work for kids who are not left brained learners (ie kids who love symbols, can learn long sequences of itty bitty details. Same old thing, however, I do like the fact that the SOUNDS are being taught not the letter names. What is best for the 2/3 of kids who are right brained learners is to embed a visual into the symbol so they can SEE something representing the sound (ex, C stylized to be a cave, T a table, etc) for more examples, see child-1st(dot)com.
Oh my... I've been watching your Japan videos and thinking how hard Japanese is - but THIS video made me realize how overwhelming English sounds must be too. Now I feel more motived to learn Japanaese because (as you say on your website) its "just" a foreign language. Good job ;)

THis is the way we roll!
Only sounds and the letter that correspond graphically to them!
And we focus only into that!
We use finger spelling in ASL as a sign to the sound of each letter.
Richard!! We need an ABC sounds in a different rithym so, we can do the sounds and the sign along!
Pretty please!
A song that I could repeat 3 times each letter sound and its sign.
IF u do the song..i will make a video of that version!!!!!
