The creator of Titanic made fictional characters. Jack and Rose were not based off real people. He later found out though that there was in fact a guy named Joseph Dawson (J. Dawson) who was on the Titanic and died.

Because, honastly, I don't think people would want to see a movie about a ship that sank the next day without a good background story to it, even if the dirrectors have to make one up. Hay, if you want, don't take my word for it, or any of the people here, google Jack Dawson and you'll just find the charracter, not the actual non-exciting person.

@msmithstud : molly brown was is not a fictional character. there were fictional characters and then there were those who weren't. if you look up the film on wikipedia, though it can be iffy, you will find a list of characters and it tells you which ones were fictional and which weren't. perhaps you are thinking of rose? she was fictional, along with her mother, her husband to be and his second hand man. jack dawson is also fictional, he is not real in anyway, just a figment of imagination.

It was years after we worked on the script that Michael Hutchence, who decided to cover Iggy Pop's "The Passenger" for another movie script we worked on "Batman Forever".
