I've always thought that this was something like "Sister Ray Part 2" - same approach, but this time let Moe lead. It's too bad that there are no decent-sounding live recordings. And, yeah, I'd be happy if this went on for another 20 minutes.
I bet members of Can and other people who went on to make "Krautrock" listened to this and said, "Oh, *that's* what happens when you hit a vibrating groove and *stay there*." Some of the best music of the 20th century.
isnt their LSD stuff exelent! no pretensions, except the imagination and pretending of a good smooth quality trip! great band!
pity most new bands are too technical and anal to better this! so happy i discovered this band in my teens before the rot set in to the alternative scene!
Great video!!! I'd subscribe, but You Tube won't let me. I get this message whenever I try: 'You have too many subscriptions compared to your number of subscribers.' (Quote.) So, I contacted them and asked if they were aware that I kept up with my subscriptions. They said, 'No, but if you drop some of your subscriptions you can add more.' WTF? Anyway, thank you for posting this:)

There's always gotta be that one douchebag who doesn't like the video......
But other than that, Lou Reed is boss. That guy sure does know how to write and create riffs, all with such emotion and intensity as well as the ability to write songs that you can relate to, or imagine you could.
@putdownan8dude - Well, that's a whole other question. There is some degree of speculation that, in fact, this track is from elsewhere and that Cale might be on it.
Thanks for the post. Haven't heard this record (Live 1969) since I was 15 (1979!). Nice video for it too. Great Maureen Tucker drums here. Imagine if Cale on viola (or organ) would have been on this! Perfect song to be tripping to as well. Lou Reed sang so good here, it's a crying shame the way he sings now, innit?
it has to be heard to be liked or disliked. I was around in those days and I never heard their music . If I had to name a band they remind me of I would have to the Doors. The doors got air play, jukebox play.

Well... stone me if you want... but, this seems like a poor man's imitation of "The Moody Blues" to me. To each his own.... some prefer the gravel to the paved roads. I am sure it will find it's way into some underground circles.
Uhh... Velvet Underground was critically acclaimed at the time.
It was the fact that it never caught on for the mainstream crowd. Its well known that the Velvet Underground were critically loved but underappreciated by the general public.
@djboony & often doesn't understand where "THERE" even is, having the wrong map altogether, and the neurotic impulsion to lunge for "something somewhere MUST be wrong.."
Being no fan of the VU, I still don't understand how a copy of this live CD appeared in my collection. I don't enjoy the majority of the album, however I have to say though, this is superb. The term the "tight but loose" springs to mind. Four(?) musos who are all doing their own thing, but seem to pull it together into a beautiful song.
"It's a long, grubby recording made on cassette in Texas during one of the Velvets' long tours of college campuses. The quality is, by digital standards, so poor it would never make it to release these days. This is such a defiantly analogue recording that, if you could still buy it, I'd recommend that you buy the cassette and play it too loud on your car stereo."

As a recent turned fan I love that I keep stumbling upon new recordings by them. To think that they were only together a couple of years.

Lou Reed has one of the best abilities to write "pop" songs of anyone, ever. It's pop music with the sensibility of Flaubert.

There's a version of Ocean with Cale on it. It's a bonus track to the extended CD version of Loaded, but, no, not on this version. Shame

I love the other, more dissonant material too, but what always amazed me about the VU was their sheer beauty...and their sense of moment

Wow. VU at their sloppiest and most beautiful. Such a different style from the version off Fully Loaded. Wonderful.

Clearly my words don't do this song justice.

yes this is a standout cut on that record to me as well

The definitive version can be found on "VU". This version is available on "Live 1969", which is still knocking around on CD and recent vinyl reissue.
