Shahidji plays a wonderfully expressive Pilu - by turns hopeful, and heartbreaking - always as eloquent, or beautiful, as any poetry/ I can never make up my mind whether I like him better of Shujaat Khansahib. Fortunately I don't have to - I can have each as my favorite when I am listening to him. It is such a blessing that we have such musicians to carry the legacy of Ustad Vilayat Khansabib!
From where did this great maestro Shahid Parveji buy this Sitar? Can anyone please please tell me where can I buy the Sitar that Shahidji is playing.Who is the maker, where can I find him?..Can anyone please tell me what is an ebony bridge? Why the bridge in Shahidji's Sitar is black in colour? What is it made of?
Actually his touring sitars are made by Ibrahim and Bashir. None of the big makers would make a sitar to his specifications because they were considered odd requests, so he went to Ibrahim and Bashir and they made him exactly what he wanted. I have seen his sitar up close and even though the detail work is not perfect the tone of his instrument is astounding live.
You mean to say an Afgani song on Raga Pilu, Raga Pilu is unique, it's not copied from anywhere...this is a traditional Etwah Gharana style of Raga Pilu, Ustad Vilayat Khan also played this very similar to what Shahid Ji has played here!
Yes, I have heard that song. It is based on Raga Piloo and in particular this bandesh. I believe that song is a copy of this composition. Afghan singers are some of the most audacious copiests.
ok, they are nice Sitars I must say and a very reputable maker, someone brought one here(Auckland NZ)from India recently and I helped them with it. There are a few guys offering DVD lessons like Batish for example but I dont know what quality lessons they are. You could always make a 6 week journey to Varanasi and spend all that time learning.
No i don't like Batish. He seems more of a fusion artist plus i saw his samples somewhere and i did not like it at all. I need someone traditional, orthodox (way of teaching).
I was in Varanasi a few months back but not to learn Sitar but to offer last rights of a great Sage. But i've heard the same of learning Sitar in Kashi, that it's 'one' of the best places.
Ustad-ji mentions somewhere that he gets his Sitar made in Miraj, but does get it re-strengthened by Rikhi Ram in Delhi. And does his own jawari on Ebony bridge.
Young ustadji is just soooo sweet.Tears come to my eyes when I listen to his sitar. The renditions in raga Pilu touched my heart and I couldnt find a superlative.
I think i got this video from esnip...i thought to share it on youtube as this particular rag is my favorite, no doubt Shahid ji being my favorite, and of all the sitar videos this is probably one of the best performance.
Nadaboom , you honestly think you can, one day, play like him? No disrespect to you, but it is humanly impossible. It is not just practice, you have gotta have talent. God has given this man a talent like no others before him and most likely no others after him. Just like the rest of us, listen, enjoy and be proud that you have lived to see such talent.
It is true, practice (8-14 hours a day) will definitely lead you to great heights, but there is so much happening before and after that creates a legend; having LIFE devoted to Guru and his teachings, the influence and above all the Self, which is always unique.
@playsitar that is very ignorant of you to say it is humanly impossible for someone you don't even know to play like the ustad parvez. anyone who loves music enough and has enough devotion can reach as high as anyone else. we are all human after all. I am assuming you yourself believe you can never play like parvez, and are expanding that onto the rest of us. Strive and dont settle and you will reach the stars.
i don't think this man is human....the unbelieveable subtle gaykis he does are out of this world....i heard he is one of the youngest people to have ever been declared ustad...just amazing
@nadaboom Ustadji is definately one of the great masters of his generations. Ustad means maestro in Urdu, there is no official declaration of the title, a great master is indeed an Ustad, but this goes with popular consent and not through an official declaration... in fact many people misuse this title...
Thank you so much for posting this!! I've been trying to find Shahid Parvez's music for a long time now, and the only thing I've really managed to do is watch youtube videos. I started learning the sitar a few months ago and he just blows me away every time. It's interesting to hear him when he's quite a bit younger, he's definately grown in a master. Please post more!
