@RobRy813 Then, if it's too low, why do people made 8-string guitars? And add a strings on the bass side instead of adding it on the treble side, like the way they do it on a 6-string basses?
@metalballs2010 8 string guitars are possible because the strings are much much smaller gauge- they vibrate faster, and the pitch is higher than even the higher strings on a bass. To make a string actually sound at that pitch in bass range, the neck would have to be longer than an upright bass, maybe longer. Also, once you start going lower than a low open B, the human ear stops being able to recognize the pitch clearly.
@RobRy813 Well, thx for the info... I know, but, many people can hear a low A notes clearly, including me, but below low A, I don't know, because I have heard some songs played in low g#, but, the bass is covered with heavily distorted guitars
Same technique? It's not a drum or guitar contest, where you try to play every style imaginable to try to imoress somebody or some judge, it's music. I can certainly understand if you don't care for it. I respect that since I dislike country music, though I respect the genre. I've seen great technicians that can copy every style, but guess what technique only gets you so far. Imagination and the ability to compose makes a successful musican, these guys have that capablity. You don't.
Hey guys, ive searched for the solo of pino that u all talked about. Its a beautiful solo, and i am a great great greaaaaat fan of pino paladino (MY HERO!), BUT a solo made just of simple pentatonics cant be called "the best bass solo ever made". :^\
the pino paladino himself have some bigger hit solos on his carreer, most even now with his new allstar group PSP. so, gimme a break. ;^)
2 of my favorite people in the world and great friends.... u are watching the best living pastorius bassist here.... in my humble opinion. felix > david
They are both ridiculous players. I saw Felix play live with Jeff Coffin and the Mu'tets. He is amazing. And then you've got Victor with Bela Fleck. Don't try and see who's better. They are both way way way way way way way up there. =)
Because everyone thinks they can play guitar and drums lol. If you have a natural gift for the bass guitar your set cause not that many people can play bass at the level about finger & pick.
True stuff, I've never been able to get my head (or fingers lol) around the guitar. But the bass just came naturally to me. I've never been in a band that has been looking for a new guitarist but know of lots of people who's bands are constantly looking for a good bassist.
@MrHullenzian I agree, good bassists are always in demand. I've been a sax player most of my life and last year I picked up the bass and it also seems to come quite naturally to me. I love it! And the fact that there's way more work out there for bass than for sax makes it 10 times sweeter!
Well then tell me, what's the point of playing a guitar, in your mind? If it's because you like the guitar, then you could probably assume that it's because Bassists like the Bass. I'm guessing you don't understand why they're playing melodic licks in a higher register instead of a standard root note groove. The Bass can be just as expressive as any other instrument. No limits in music.
Dude pretty amazing.... Like father like son.... He doesn't have to do Jaco licks to show he's Jaco's son.... He has his own thing... Although his tone is pretty close....
as do I. felix's playing is much more varied. there's no one better that wooten making new sounds and rythmswith the bass. but as far as really melodic solos go, I prefer others
I too, I think what you have to bear in mind is that vic, while having an incredible groove and great technique is still more of a groove player with a little knowledge about music theory (he said it himself) and that most jazz players have been taught a lot about what makes jazz sound like jazz and so they're choice of notes often sounds more tasteful
@gordonS2 In almost any situation I prefer someone else's bass playing to Vic. He's great at what he does, and has crazy chops, but tastefulness and restraint are not strong points. "Because you can" is the reason beginning players overplay. I'm not sure what his reason is.
@riebling27 I'm pretty sure it's just what he has going on in his head, not so much that he lacks restraint and tastefulness. He's does what musicians are supposed to do when they improvise: do what you FEEL...
This is good for Felix too. The two of these guys in a room. Felix is going to be the ulitmate monster in ten years, twenty years, oh my god. He already sounds like his father a great deal....He's going to be so incredible.

BTW i am downloading the Pino solo you told me about...
ok. maybe i misunderstood what you wrote then. if so, my apologies. it sounded to me as though you were putting them down as improvisors. the word improvisation does not belong to any genre. it originates from the latin root "improvisio" which literally translates as "surprise" or "unexpected". and i'm not sure what you mean by "jazz music" either. i'm just trying to make "music". people overdub all the time...including miles, trane, etc...is that not improvisation?
1. i think that everyones opinion is valid and open for dialogue. mine as well. i just dont think that putting another player down should be involved in the discussion.
2. i hear it differently. this is a "before" the finished solo and you have not heard the final product. i thought it would be interesting to post so people could hear the difference. all you have heard is the "before" and you have already decided you don't like the final solo even tho you have not heard it? interesting...

4. vic is a great teacher and player. everyone around him has learned something from him. and like i said before, i usually don't get involved with these posts. but thank you for being open to the talk. peace : )
to Fjord76, i respect your opinion even tho i don't agree. i just dont feel that your opinion needs to degrade other players for it to be valid. as far as "where the music is in this video"...i hear 2 musicians having a conversation, listening to each other. that's what i hear. and yes, i remember how jaco used to introduce himself...so what? does it bother you so much that you have to dog another musician? thanks for thinking me wise and very smart. peace to you too.
i usually dont respond but here goes. to say that there is a "best solo ever" shows not a width of understanding but rather a narrowness. you are entitled to you opinion but degrading and belittling something someone else has done and then to say you "know" what the best representation of something is shows more ignorance than education. someone said once that you are either informed or uninformed. i believe you are uniformed...
Haha, I don't think so. If you listen to them both soloing, you'll see that victor is playing more melodically and lyrically, where Felix is really tearin' up the fretboard. Both different styles, no player is really 'better'.
def man victor is way overrated he's pretty damn good but I don't rate him as high as other bass players... Victor seems to me more mechanical than other bass players... his slapping techniques is crazy "mechanical" and seeing flecktones live none of his performance was improv all straight of the CD note for note... it was kinda sad, but saying that vic is still a great player
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Check out the video I posted of Christian McBride soloing. I'll take any four of his note choices over Wooten running a series of scales and people calling it music. Another thing I like about McBride is that you can actually hear the bass, not just the frets. I hate to be so negative on a guy who so many people are passionate about, but hes just not very good. Lots of technique, lots of notes, not a lot of music.
Wow are you stupid, I don't think you know that all music is made up of scales. The only way we can make music is to use scales, because a song is nothing but a broken up scale. Scales are why American music sounds different from say Middle Eastern music. You shouldn't judge people because they know how to navigate their instrument better than you and others.
Well...actually, there are modes that you can use to compose as well. Scales were based on modes and ironically there are seven different modes for each scale...eight if you count the octave.
You don't count the octave because it's the same mode as the 1st scale degree. There were 8 plainchant modes but they don't wok the way the modern modes work. (ionian, dorian, ... locrian) And scales don't need to have 7 notes: pentatonic (5), whole tone and augmented (6), octatonic (aka diminished 8). You get the idea. Non-symmetrical scales should have one mode per scale degree, but symmetical scales will have fewer. (whole tone has only 1 mode while augmented and octatonic have 2 each)
arnbassbaritone: You shouldn't be so harsh when you're wrong. It makes you look stupid too. There's lots of music that doesn't use scales. You won't find these guys playing it I bet, but it's out there. Look up Schoenberg, Webern, Cowell, Cage, Xenakis, Penderecki, and Merzbow for starters. Some of their music uses scales, but LOTS doesn't. And what about didgeridoos, drums, musique concrete? All music, no scales.
What an idiot are you really talking about drums. Drums actually do give notes you ass. Everything in life gives off a sound so therefore there are notes involved. And there's music doesn't use scales, are you retarded. That is not even possible. All music is formed around scales. And if it isn't why are there only 12 notes, but thousands of scales.
You are ignorant, uneducated, narrow-minded, and more rude than is really necessary. You obviously have no idea what you're talking about and every word you write reinforces that. "Only 12 notes"? WTF are you talking about? There's an infinite # of notes. The 12 that we typically use in the west are arbitrarily chosen, and there is a debate spanning centuries over exactly which we 'should' be using. You're right that other cultures' music can often be distinguished by their scales. For example,
Indonesians have 2 scales (that I'm familiar with). One has 5 notes, the other 7. Each instrument set is tuned uniquely within the general frame of a scale (meaning no 2 are exactly the same), and their scale tones (for both) will fall between ours. Scales yes, but not the same 12 notes. True, drums can be tuned to specific pitches, but more commonly they are not. It depends on the culture and style of music being played. Usually a drum's sound is inharmonic. That means there is not a
I don't hear a lot of jaco in felix. I hear more of similarity to more modern funk jazz like wayman tisdale, cept no slapping of course. Call me crazy, but that's what I hear, tell me wht you think.
thanks, I appreciate that. I analyze music a lot, and will often come to unexpected outcomes like this, and most people would just say to me (as it has happened) "you're dumb because his son has to sound like him". So, thanks again for that.
yea i gotta agree...he's got a whole new world of influences that his father didnt have, so he better not sound like a jaco clone, there are too many out there as it is lol
Felix may be a better improvising soloist than his dad...really nice playing.

Felix btw has a good technique but was too much mechanical on this playin'.
josuefreitas 3 years ago
def man victor is way overrated he's pretty damn good but I don't rate him as high as other bass players... Victor seems to me more mechanical than other bass players... his slapping techniques is crazy "mechanical" and seeing flecktones live none of his performance was improv all straight of the CD note for note... it was kinda sad, but saying that vic is still a great player

Lots of technique, lots of notes, not a lot of music.
fratboy3001 3 years ago
Wow are you stupid, I don't think you know that all music is made up of scales. The only way we can make music is to use scales, because a song is nothing but a broken up scale. Scales are why American music sounds different from say Middle Eastern music. You shouldn't judge people because they know how to navigate their instrument better than you and others.
arnbassbaritone 3 years ago 4
Well...actually, there are modes that you can use to compose as well. Scales were based on modes and ironically there are seven different modes for each scale...eight if you count the octave.
KSalitrik 3 years ago
lol nice one mate!
szczerbo 3 years ago

All music, no scales.
ibonyun 3 years ago
What an idiot are you really talking about drums. Drums actually do give notes you ass. Everything in life gives off a sound so therefore there are notes involved. And there's music doesn't use scales, are you retarded. That is not even possible. All music is formed around scales. And if it isn't why are there only 12 notes, but thousands of scales.
arnbassbaritone 3 years ago

I'm surprised Felix isn't bigger than he is, kinda like Ravi Coltrane. Both good players.

Very cool of Victor that he teaches pastorius son. His dad was an awsome player and an exaple to many of us bassplayers!!

its probably a custom ernieball musicman?
uzl829 3 years ago
Its a "BOTTOM WAVE BASS" with AERO single jazz bass pickups. Dominique Di piazza also plays one of this.

felix is playing an American Fender Jazz...of course it isn't an ernie ball...

he's not as good as his dad... but he is good
adrian5b 3 years ago 2
takes lots of courage to take up bass after your father was JACO!!. he must get compared to him alot
rustyhook100 3 years ago 7
I don't hear a lot of jaco in felix. I hear more of similarity to more modern funk jazz like wayman tisdale, cept no slapping of course. Call me crazy, but that's what I hear, tell me wht you think.

totally agree

thanks, I appreciate that. I analyze music a lot, and will often come to unexpected outcomes like this, and most people would just say to me (as it has happened) "you're dumb because his son has to sound like him". So, thanks again for that.
DaJazzBass 3 years ago
yea i gotta agree...he's got a whole new world of influences that his father didnt have, so he better not sound like a jaco clone, there are too many out there as it is lol

LMAO!!!!!
grownnbass 3 years ago
That's good, if he son was a clone of Jaco, that would be lame, he should find his own sound.
