I met them when i was 14yrsl old in New Orleans, la. My sister's father in law ran the gift shop in their hotel. So, he go me a pass to go to their room Mary is no longer with us. She had beauitful long silky real blonde hair. But, she looked very pale. And i saw Peter in Bogoda,Calif. In a restuarant with a young lady. I think it was his niece. They are beautiful people.I can play most of their songs on my trusty ovation guitar.
I believe that what we get from this is that Christians and Jews hold the same values.... and that we will stand with Israel FOREVER. Thank you Peter, Paul and Mary for reminding us of this ..... We will forever stand with Israel and her people! God loves his people. Christians recognize your God given country.
The mountains that we are talking about are mountains of extracted symbolic weeds. The moral dilemmas that peace activists of the 60s faced, begin to resolve themselves once you begin to implode the desire to hate others into the noble intention of symbolically rooting out hatred itself. Weed Out Hate is a grass roots inititative that can give peace a chance by asking each of us to take responsibiliity to symbolically remove our inner weeds.,
@weedouthate Well that may be what you take from the song. It may even be what PP&M took from the song but it is originally an African-American spiritual song, compiled by John Wesley Work, Jr., dating back to at least 1865. It's considered a Christmas carol because its original lyric celebrates the Nativity of Jesus: 'Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere; go tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born.'
PPM ARE ABSOLUTELY one of the most gifted artsts of all time for me bec. their songs hav unique lyrics as well as amzing & their melodies are splendid!make me feel like floating in the air in joy while listening ovr & ovr again to their music.pure talent indeed!
I think PP&M lyrics are based on Moses saying (paraphrase) 'set my people free' . The mountain is most likely Mount Sinai. Historically, that would precede the Christmas bent on the lyrics. I'm interested in knowing when which version of the lyrics appeared in American culture. Anyone got the facts? I'm curious as to what Michelle Bachman's story would be about this ....LOL
I am used to hearing the version "That Jesus Christ is Born." This is a much more progressive version, sort of like a Negro Spiritual or Gospel song that would have been fitting at a Civil Rights rally. Mary was progressive and Civil Rights was one of her many causes.
@ John1948, many thanks for posting, but I suggest you upload the info. since Mary unfortunately is not touring anymore.
But what enthusiasm and soul PP&M show here! Some singers today scream and yell and wriggle or try to be seductive or whatever, but somehow they come across as fake. PP&M were genuine in their music and their feelings.
Haven't listened to PPM in years. Saw a TV programme about Newport Folk Festival and I ended up here on YouTube to see and hear more. Wonderful stuff. Takes me back to 1964 when I started learning guitar.
Why do we not have great music like this in 2011.... radio/TV music in 2011 is revolting... only through YouTube are we able to listen to great music. Bless the YouTube folks for making music available to us and those who upload music. Cheers.... spend the next day simply listening to YouTube music. Cheers
THIS SONG ON VINYL WAS PLAYED IN HOOCHES IN VIET NAM , SANG EQUALLY BY ALL AROUND AND SO LOVED , BUT WAS NOT ALLOWED ON AFN RADIO I N COUNTRY. MARY TRAVERS WAS VERY LOVED BY ALL AND WAS SO THE CENTERING POWER TO LEADER IN THE GROUP......EVEN WHEN PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON WS SO CONTROVERSIAL.....
Mary Travers was the sexiest woman alive in the 60s.
I saw PP&M every time they had a concert to Columbus Ohio and can still see Mary's foot tapping on the stage floor in my mind's eye.
Those concerts were so powerful and beautiful, they not only changed my perspective on life, but I rank those concerts among the great moments in my life.
I first heard this song from the french singer Marie Laforet who covered it in the mid sixties, keeping only the melody, with different lyrics. If you're interested, search for: Viens sur la montagne Marie Laforet
I was going to say I'm surprised to see a thumbs down, then saw that it was a mistake! They were phenomenal. One of a kind. Three great and very distinct and unique voices that blended perfectly. My older silblings got me started on them when I was 4 and I've loved them ever since. I was spinning their records myself on our stereo when I was 5! 'In The WInd' will always be one of my all-time favorites.
Argh, I accidentally clicked on the thumbs down when I meant to click on the thumbs up. I wish I could undo it! Sorry! I totally agree with you. She looks beautiful.
@creome17 Oh yeah! A true beauty! Peter and Noel (Paul )should now make an album dedicated to the late and lovely Mary featuring some of her contemporaries... Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell for example Could be great! Anyone agree??
Please tell me that this is somebody's idea of a sick joke. Mary, please tell us that this isn't so. You gave us so much. My cousins had the 45 of this song. I used to listen to this when I visited them. We love you and miss you. We will NEVER forget you. Thank you for the memories. I'm sure that Peter and Paul now know how The Mamas & The Papas felt when Cass Elliot died.
@blueblazer68 about 2 years ago I posted a performance of PPM on Steve Allen Show doing this somg. I had nearly 300,000 views when it got booted off . I'm sure this was shot within a week or so of the Steve Allen show. I perfer the SA version as the bass is up in the mix more than here. This song is PPM at their best. Pure excitement.
@lmbee59 I'll give it another go & hopefully it will remain here for the masses. If NBC would just either lighten up or better yet make a good quality version available this wouldn't be a problem at all.
AMEN! What a blessing song!
