For some reason i could not post the link but if you go to my channel - clarkekiss - you will see the only Yamaha commercial I could find with the "fly me away" jingle
I too was searching for that old Yamaha radio ad that featured this hit songs melody. If anyone has it please put it on. That Yamaha jingle still plays n my head lol
I think this song really carries the message "if you love someone let them go. If they come back, they are yours forever. If they dont, hunt them down and kill them"
I was a huge Yamaha motocross fan owning a succession of bikes as a kid starting with a 1974 MX80 then a 1976 YZ 125 and (new) 1979 YZ 125 which was stolen when I was in high school - arrrgghh!. Bob Hannnah was my hero. Coincidentally - or subliminally - we named our oldest daughter Hannah, hmmmmm. I was looking for the Yamaha jingle but this is as close as I have gotten so far. Very nostalgic.
Thanks for posting!!! I keep trying to find the Yamaha commercial that this song was a part of but no luck and I just saw that someone else has remembered it. Can anyone find that commercial?? I would love to see/listen again!! Thanks!
I almost forgot this song ...cos don't get to hear it anymore... so happy I found it here...thanks for sharing...isn't it nice for those of us sharing the memories this song brings....1970s...simple to be happy...
Never forgot this song as music was very important in my youth . But I know how those things go.. Love the era ...Got to live through it .....Compared to the music? these days this was absolutely great music . What happened ????
The musical format is similar to Arizona, but I have always like this much better, unfortunately, you almost never hear this on oldies stations, just Arizona! I see the previous comments about the Yamaha commercials, I had forgotten them until reading the posts! LOL It was very cleverly done how they adapted this to the Yamaha commercial!
I first heard this song back in 70 on an FM station in Los Angeles (KNX FM) I bought the album at a Furniture store in Culver City just south of the old Culver Center. The album cover and record look just like the one on this site.
There was also The Mighty 1290 KTRN in Wichita Falls, TX. That station, under a new set of call letters KWFS, reemerged briefly in the mid-1990s as "The Mighty 1290" but with an oldies format.
I too, got here looking for the Yamaha commercial. Imagine that, 40 or whatever years, and I never knew this was a Mark Lindsay, aka Paul Revere, song. Thanks, whoever posted it! It was better in the commercial!!!!
@mel8rose12 me too!! i was looking for this song in yamaha commercials and got here! LOL.... my family owned two yamaha dealerships from '75 to '85 and i always liked this jingle for yamaha then one day...(about 1977).... heard it on the radio as 'Silver Bird' but never knew it was mark lindsey until today..
Does someone besides me remember Yamaha motorcycles using this song in one of their commercials in the late 60's or early 70's? I have looked and can't find anything. Would love to see it again since I've had 2 Yamaha dirt bikes. Thanks!
@mcatman34 that is so weird, I have been looking for the exact same thing this week. Cannot find the ad anywhere. Apparently it was done in 74, four years after this song was release and the ad lyrics as well as the singing were done by Mark Lindsay himself which is no doubt why it sounded so good.
@mcatman34 here are the lyrics I found for the Yamaha spot. Get aboard the Silver Bird, It's a magical machine. Satisfy your Walter Mitty mind, tryin' out a dream. Your sign is Capricorn and every corner of your mind says you'll remain my friend, a friend for all my time. Yamaha, won't you fly me away, Yamaha, take me into the day, Yamaha, come and give me a ride and let us go see what's on the other side. Yamaha, won't you fly me away. Yamaha, today is the day.
I was trying to think what it was about these songs that attracted me so much and I realize that...I'ts a combination of the person singing, his style and words and the backing instruments. In this case Mark Lindsay's great voice, the simplicity and meaning of his words, and REAL violins, trumpets and keyboard organs. Where are they today?
I listened to this song on WHBQ 560 in Memphis. 7th grade. Loved this song! But everything he does is awesome. Can never get enough of Mark's singing!!!!!!!
So powerful! I love every one of his songs, especially this one and Arizona and Indian Reservation..... Like the post before me from "goodthing99"-says it all! I couldn't agree more! Makes me wish for those good old days.....
THANK YOU MARK for all of your musical contributions. How many out there know that Mark learned to play the saxaphone in just 6 months? What natural talent! Thank you, Paul Revere, for forming the combo. Thank you, AlanPaladin for posting!
Columbia records was using all kinds of labels on their 45's in 1970. The first shot of the stock copy at the beginning of the video shows the rarest of all these labels
Yes, I remember the commercial well and have been trying to find it on audio or video. Mark was involved with some other commercials in the seventies also.
@Dawn1959 I was 12 years old when I saw that commercial. I also remember the Ford commercials with the light bulb "Ford has a Better Idea" from earlier still.
Tonight is the first time I've listened to this song with headphones in probably 30 years and it just blew me away. The horns, strings and percussion arrangements are AMAZING!!! Producers don't seem to put that kind of thought, time and energy into music anymore. Thank you for posting this wonderful song.
I rembmer this song very well. It was released just after "Arizona" It was not played a lot on am rock stations. It did get a lot of play on easy listening stations back then on the fm side. If I am not mistaken it was played on KNXFM In Los Angeles.
@thompsonlake may be i can help you thereor thier. as naything gold has grand presence silver has grand knowlege,, now let see a new world but wait he knows the exact day but hey ya gotta die to find the rest . of the song.. ? or was that to heavy??
wado skn'a for this posting...prayers sent up for the CAPRICORN Sister with this mission for OUR PEOPLE!..We where told the Mess-ages in the Music ..I have no clue what ppl where hearing...I know what I was hearing growing up in Land ruled by Pilgrims..being RED DNA and not allowing OUR Worship to the CREATOR SKY FATHER till 1978!
OMG been forever since I heard this, Brings back some fabulas times. That band used to open for Magic Shows when I was a Kid plus they Played on Batman and other gigs. Cool Song
...this reminds me of 0300 AM one august morning down by the river w/ my girl named chris, back in '70 listening to mark lindsey stretching his golden pipes to this song 'bout one week before football training camp started....god what good memories....
This fellow was really good looking. I'm surprised. Another singer of his genetation who was also a spunk was New Zealander John Rowles. By the way, Silver Bird is a nice early 70's number from the days of mellow pop music.
FYI, Mark Lindsay is touring with the Teen Idol Tour (Peter Noone & Micky Dolenz) starting May 8th in Westbury, NY. (Got my ticket!! :-)) He's also putting together a solo tour!! Marlene
I had the 45 when i was 12,i liked it very much but the b side"so hard to leave you" is even better,i wish i still had it,maybe it'll get posted. thanx for sharing.
That was early 1970. I was in Germany in the army and remember hearing it on Armed Forces Radio, with a comment by the announcer of how it reminded us of when we would be going "back to the land of round doorknobs".
Ah, I love this! I saw ML when he was with the Raiders, twice, then solo, then about 12 years ago. LOVE him! And this song is definitely one of my favorites of his....
Mark had such a great voice. I wish someone would upload his version of "and the grass won't pay no mind" which was written by Neil Diamond. I have the old record but it is so scratched up you can't even make out the song...
Perfect early 70's pop. I've always thought that whoever produced the Partridge Family songs had a hand in Mark Lindsay's solo records. This is not a knock against this song, it's just that the backing and arrangement just sound similar. It's a sad thing about the way the music industry works when people like Lindsay and Tommy James suddenly dropped off the charts around 1972.
For any interested Mark Lindsay fans, there is a chat room set up specifically for Mark's radio show when he broadcasts on Sat. nights between 10:00pm-2:00am EST. He's a DJ for K-Hits and broadcasts from his Rock 'n Roll Cafe in Portland, OR. Go to "Rock Groups by Tom Brady," scroll to the bottom, click on "Chat Room." Enter your name, click on "Chat" and you're in. Even if you don't choose to enter chat, do yourself a favor and listen to Mark's show -- he's absolutely fabulous!! :-)
If you have the promo 45 which includes the mono version of this song you are very lucky as it is much more balanced on the vocals than the commercial stereo version.
I found this by accident and sir, you have put a great big smile on faces everywhere!! I always thought he was better solo--I wasn't much of a fan of the Raiders. Just want you to know you made an old man happy!! Thank You and GOD BLESS!!!
In 1970, I was standing on to the tarmac of a runway in south vietnam. A friend had sent me this song on a cassette (remember those??). I was listening to it as I was ready to board my own silver bird. Taking me home...to my family, my friends, and "that very special lady".
This record reached #25 in the summer of 1970. I'm glad I got to know Mark Lindsay -- and not simply as a first-rate singer, songwriter and producer., He's also a first rate PERSON -- not easy to find in the swinging, swirling world of show biz.
How could anyone dislike this? I wore out my vinyl single from playing it so much. I'm thrilled with the clarity of yours, thanks for sharing!

Very good observation. Personally, I absolutely loved the songs by The Partridge Family and Mark Lindsay. The BEST in 70's pop.

This guy was very good looking. The collar length hair and sideburns seemed to look so sexy on young men in that era.

Love this song. I got hooked on Mark Lindsay when I was a little girl when my mom listened to him. I have the 45. Awesome. Thanks for posting.

I also seem to remember "Silver Bird" being used in a motorcycle commercial around 1973.

In 1970, I was standing on to the tarmac of a runway in south vietnam. A friend had sent me this song on a cassette (remember those??). I was listening to it as I was ready to board my own silver bird. Taking me home...to my family, my friends, and "that very special lady".
Thanks for the memories!

One of my all-time favorite songs!

This record reached #25 in the summer of 1970. I'm glad I got to know Mark Lindsay -- and not simply as a first-rate singer, songwriter and producer., He's also a first rate PERSON -- not easy to find in the swinging, swirling world of show biz.
