quicker acceleration? last time i checked it was still the disappointing 0-60 in 6.5 (minimum) not any faster than other civic's. Put the S2000 engine in that bitch!
While other car channels use young good looking women to give superficial reviews, C&D uses a knowledgeable presenter to give a good technical review. If all C&D reviews are this good, I am switching- bye-bye roadfly & motortrend.
Nice video. I think the 8th gen (06-11) coupe looks so much better though. This new one is derivative and messes up the original styling, inside and out.
That 8th gen. Civic Si K motor was sooo smooth and sounded sweet, but it was weak compared to the K motor in the 2002-2004 Acura RSX Type-S. The 2005-2006 Acura RSX Type-S was noticeably more powerful with a hp increase, but it just doesn't feel or sound as refined as the 8th gen. Civic Si. I'm interested in comparing the torque increase on this larger 9th gen. Civic Si K motor.
i love it when i hear people talk shit about this car. anybdoy who owns and 8th gen would obviously love it better cause they own it. yes the 8th gen looks better and has better interior. but it dosent take a math genius to see there is a performance boost. now for the not so bright people, yes the 4 hp boost isn't noticible. however the torque is insane if u actually drive one. also the suspension is beautifully handling. it feels stiffer and the electric steering is a practical cost.
I bought this car sight unseen directly from the port. I didn't even know what color it was at the time. I ended up with the sunburst orange coupe and couldn't be happier. The performance acceleration and handling is better than the 09 Accord V6 coupe I had and alot more fun to drive. The ride is not jarring and I am getting an average 29 mpg even though my foot is always in the throttle. I am very happy with the car.
i think its funny all the people talking shit about the 9th gen. personally, ive driven my friends 8th gen and i just test drove the 9th and i perfer the 9th by far. the torque is insane and it hauls ass. yeah the interior is a little cheap but everything else about it is amazing. im ordering one tommorow
man the last generation civic si looks lower and better. now it looks like its going to flip if you take a corner too fast. never seen one in person but the 4 door looks better
@belizetj I own an 8th gen and when you hit a pothole it's ridiculous. I live in Montreal dude. The entire place is a pothole, it sounds like your car is being wrecked when you hit one LOL.
Another thing i dont understand is why people sayin this 9th gen civic sucks and the 8th gen is better. They are all civics! No matter what year its a family. You dont see people with camaros corvettes talkin smack bout eachother! Give it a break already.
I dont see how you people can say its ugly? All around a good car and reliable. Plus you probably have to order the car by now so im sure more people dont think its as ugly as yall do.
@CNJ0525 Dude I ordered it months ago and it's even been delayed. Honda is having trouble even getting the cars to people it's ridiculous. They're pumping out so many and have more buyers than cars.
Did i see someone on here saying theyd rather drop 2 gears than have torque? Some of us really dont know much worse part about a honda motor is lack of torque , my opinion is lower the car chip it for more horses then youd have your ideal 9th gen honda leaves room for people to improve with something called the aftermarket dickheads lol
The new Civic may not look good as the ricer would want but can capable handling at a far more superior level than these lightweight EGs, EKs, and older models.
boring and disappointing...the true vtec engine should remain small and outputs the high hp. Honda, we wouldnt give a rats ass about how much torque has improved. We would be happyto down shift two gears if it is necessary
People need to stop expecting so much from a civic.it's a civic!! If Honda wanted to compete with evos and all that they would.but they don't cause that's not what a civic Si is about.a civic Is about having a cheap reliable sport car that people would love to tune.and stop saying it's ugly, looks better than having a round civic Si.fix it up as you would with the 8th gen and then see if it's ugly.most of you are just saying it sucks cause you see other people say.over all performance is better.
Wrong. You fail. Honda is taking orders for these cars and the factories are pumping them out as fast as they can to meet demand. Most people are waiting a month for these cars. The initial vehicles that were given to dealers as unsold units are long gone.
Wasn't the Camry design scrapped in '06 when the 8th gen Civic was released? There was a big thing about the Camry taking a long time to come to market because Toyota was making it more Civic-like. If I'm right than the Camry comments are only here because Toyota bit Honda in the first place.
Honda and Acura have been on a roll with ugly exterior designs. The average Joe Car Buyer buys on looks alone. Honda can add to their loyal following by just making more appealing designs to go with this so called clever engineering underneath. Look at Hyundai and Kia. Hyundai and Kia are finally getting people to buy their very mediocre cars based solely on looks, their low price, and Hyundai and Kia's eagerness to sell to anyone that walks onto one of their lots.
@mchou2002 true that! I have 2 hondas but they are both designed in the 90s so way better looks. The only sweet acura in the last 10 years was the 08 designed TL and Honda was maybe the 8th gen civic but nothing realy that made me wana go get in debt again! Hyundai makes good looking cars now, im a single guy but id pimp that 4 door genesis:) And that new Sonata...wow! nuff said. Honda is dead and were all looking toward Hyundais now.
Sooo, the most interesting aspect of this new Civic is the underside??
How bad does it have to be to need to jack the thing up in order to find something nice to say about the car (so Honda continues sending free test cars)!
I cant believe how many people are saying how much worse the new Si is compared to the 8th gen Si...The gave it a bunch more tourqe, and some really nice new features (in Canada anyways, we didnt have a navi option on the 8th gen) I think the interior is an improvment over the 8th gen, exterior they could have done a better job on, but it doesnt look anything like a camry like allot of people are saying. I love the 8k redline on my 2010 Si, so thats kinda a bummer that its down to 7100 now.
@SempronGamer lol its the tail lights that are almost identical to the 01-06 camry. sure the torque is great, but the reason they did that was to make it an easier to drive car...which in other words means, a more refined, less exciting car. the car is also softer than before, and theres little feedback from the steering wheel. to sum it all up: its boring
I mean the car is better.. thats a fact. But im 100 percent with the people bitching.. The car wont be as much fun to drive. It does not look as good. I have owned many turbo cars.. but the funnest cars i have ever driven are old school vtecs. s2000,prelude,del sol etc. They are soo fun. I know alot of people rant and rave about how good the old si is.. this will not get the same recognition. Honda is losing their touch.
Sure you can buy that shit Swiss fake cheese in the grocery store in the ghetto but that same Swiss cheese bought at the town where old tradition still makes it with homemade kind of care and attention is a totally different ball game. From the outside the two types of Swiss cheese look the same but one of them was crafted with more attention and care. From the weight and outer appearance, the average Joe doesn't care.
I've been a fan of Honda fan for a while, honestly this civic isn't great looking, and sure its interior is simple but its after the Tuner class of people. The other good thing I thought was getting rid of the K20 and switching to K24. HP doesnt mean a thing to me its all about torque. And the best thing I personally think is the mechanical LSD, great for traction off the line, and in the corners. I say awesome car with a few drawbacks but still for who its built for its perfect.
@xEclipse2kx Far superior? Yeah I guess i-Mid came with the previous interior. In my opinion, the exterior is lacking but the interior beat the old Si's ass.
@dhmini12 Sure, the i-Mid system si nice but that's about it. I prefer the old cluster much better rather than this boxed off look that Honda went for. Plus, the tac just looks way better on the 8th Generation Civic. But that's preference and not a fact. As long as you like the new one, go for it. :)
Exciting does not =reliability. I have yet to see a turbo car such as evo, sti, speed3, and any other FI car reach 150,000 miles on original engine and transmission. FI is not for the average consumer and that is not were the money is.
what happened to the look of the concept si they showed first.. It looks way better than this Honda Camry... DIfferent exhaust and bumper styles.. cant wait for the 10th gen
The interior, which is how people interact with a car and where people spend more of their time is the one place where the new civic falls short. To me the interior is most important.
It looks so much better than last years model. Styling has improved ten fold since the mid 2000's and I think soon Honda will be the highest selling car in the world.
What tha fuck?? There is sooooooooooooo much evidence Honda paid CarandDriver for this that its not even funny. Seriously, how many other car reviews (Toyota, Ford, Nissan, Chevy, Hyundai etc.) have looked under a car to talk about shit the average consumer doesnt care about. All they're doing here is selling the car for Honda. Point blank.
Car and Driver, DO THIS FOR EVERY VIDEO. This is what people like. Not just a simple 0-60 and 1/4 mile video. Add this and you'll get more views in all videos!
The Honda will be on the road when all the others i.e Mini--Vw- WRX- etc are in the junk yard...Honda has done a fine job of making this SI a great all around car for the person who loves to drive
I don't know why they they are making the model just look so weird ans ugly now. Don't get me wrong, i would love a 2012 Si, But with the same money i could get amuch better looking one, and have it perform just as well
@chevyblows2001 yeah but you should know, the higher the redline, the spikier the torque curve. what people dont realize is that torque gives that power substance. i wanna feel the car move when i put my foot down. not have to upshift to like 6 or 7 grand and then feel it. its lighter, and more agile than an accord so dont even say that itll feel like one. its only a little fwd wannabe sports car. the least they could do is put that engine in it.
@veins91 its a 4 cylinder N/A what do you expect from it? seriously. it had everything else a "sports car" has, Si badged seats, leather wrapped steering wheel. 6 speed tranny, upsized rim's stiffer suspension, all that other shit
@chevyblows2001 So you're saying that it has everything a sports car has...minus the power/speed? That seems like quite an important aspect of a sports car... Even with the upsized rims and stiffer suspension, it still lacks the ability to hit .90g on the skidpad. The braking distance from 60-0 barely beats the Corolla (which still uses rear drum brakes) and the Prius. In terms of performance and numbers, the Civic SI coupe is "sporty" at best.
@chevyblows2001 Lmao xD Leather-wrapped steering? Badged seats? Those are feats of a "sports car"? You can find those in almost ANY car these days. What an idiot. Btw, gay ass name you got. :)
Not a word about handling or seat of the pants feel!? Buyers looking at the rest of the Civic line might prioritize mpg, but buyers of the Si don't. Mpg is a factor, but the majority of this review focused on how new changes affected mpg and not how exciting the new Si is, or isn't, to drive. It's the performance model ffs!
So now Honda and Toyota both have sacrificed style, design, and power for efficiency and boredom. I hope Nissan does not follow the same path, at least they have the Altima, Maxima, 370Z, and GTR.
This car just doesn't compare to the VW GTI......the GTI is more powerful and handles much better. The interior on the GTI rivals that of high-end Euro cars ! unlike the cheap plasticky interior in the Civic Si
Why the hell is everyone making a big ass deal of the 170lb-ft of torque?! Seriously, you want a cookie? People, wake up...this car makes less torque then hyundai's BASE GLS Sonata engine.
I don't understand how this is worse...it's faster and much more powerful. Your getting a bigger motor that makes more power in a similar package. Your killing the Si not Honda.
@Yoda8232 The main reason why many people (myself included) think this new Si is worse than the previous gen is that Honda has killed the rev happy 8,000 RPM nature of the previous Si i favor of a more Accord like drivetrain. Now the Si is just like any other 4 cylinder car since it has a relatively low redline and no real VTEC kick. This motor has VTEC on the intake cam only.
@Xbox360Player350 Just like the previous SI, only Vtect on intake cam, wtf is your point? This has more power and has a lot more torque, it's a sporty FWD car, if you want a SPORTS Car, go look at Porsche or something else and stop conplaining about "omg this engine makes more power at lower rpm, I want more rpm for more noise and engine wear!!!!111!".
@rxvexe I'm not saying Honda should turn the Si into a sports car, but they shouldn't dumb it down either. The Si is now basically a 2/3 scale Accord EX coupe with an Accord motor. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but the previous gen Si had a bespoke motor that made it uniquely an Si. No other car winds out quite like one. I don't know about you, but I've driven several and it was pretty entertaining to keep the car in its power band. A better solution would have been to rework the K20 motor
o no! the Si has torque now! i no longer have to keep the revs over 6000 to do anything! ... come on people, the Si getting a bit more power is a good thing. and not its a much more well rounded car. the one thing that turned me off of the Si when i was considering it for my new car was the fact that it never seemed to feel relaxed. it was always revving, always racy, always red. now i can have the vtec awesomeness when i want it, and i can chill and still have some power when i dont.
This has been flagged as spam show

It looks so much better than last years model. Styling has improved ten fold since the mid 2000's and I think soon Honda will be the highest selling car in the world.
localwarzone 7 months ago
What tha fuck?? There is sooooooooooooo much evidence Honda paid CarandDriver for this that its not even funny. Seriously, how many other car reviews (Toyota, Ford, Nissan, Chevy, Hyundai etc.) have looked under a car to talk about shit the average consumer doesnt care about. All they're doing here is selling the car for Honda. Point blank.

Excellent review.
I can't think of the last time someone did an undercarriage review.
That was pretty awesome.
This guy really knows his cars.

The Honda will be on the road when all the others i.e Mini--Vw- WRX- etc are in the junk yard...Honda has done a fine job of making this SI a great all around car for the person who loves to drive

2.4 liter, more torque. fuck yeah! this si is the best one theve done
btevoxboy6835 8 months ago
@btevoxboy6835 ffuck no it redlines at 6500. how fun is that?? not very, itll be like driving a fucking 5 speed 2.4 accord.
chevyblows2001 8 months ago
@chevyblows2001 yeah but you should know, the higher the redline, the spikier the torque curve. what people dont realize is that torque gives that power substance. i wanna feel the car move when i put my foot down. not have to upshift to like 6 or 7 grand and then feel it. its lighter, and more agile than an accord so dont even say that itll feel like one. its only a little fwd wannabe sports car. the least they could do is put that engine in it.
btevoxboy6835 8 months ago
@btevoxboy6835 yeah but i just feel that honda should carry on the Si legacy. the Si has always been a high revving sports car.
chevyblows2001 8 months ago
@chevyblows2001 haha youre trolling. If you think sub 200 hp car is a "sports car" you have something wrong with you.
veins91 8 months ago
@veins91 its a 4 cylinder N/A what do you expect from it? seriously. it had everything else a "sports car" has, Si badged seats, leather wrapped steering wheel. 6 speed tranny, upsized rim's stiffer suspension, all that other shit
chevyblows2001 7 months ago
@chevyblows2001 So you're saying that it has everything a sports car has...minus the power/speed? That seems like quite an important aspect of a sports car... Even with the upsized rims and stiffer suspension, it still lacks the ability to hit .90g on the skidpad. The braking distance from 60-0 barely beats the Corolla (which still uses rear drum brakes) and the Prius. In terms of performance and numbers, the Civic SI coupe is "sporty" at best.
Cosmo1093 7 months ago
@chevyblows2001 Lmao xD Leather-wrapped steering? Badged seats? Those are feats of a "sports car"? You can find those in almost ANY car these days. What an idiot. Btw, gay ass name you got. :)
chevystud88 7 months ago
@chevystud88 its a sprot compact. yes those are nice touches....dont compare it to a rwd cars that cost a lot more.

i love my honda civic 97'! when it gets too old and bad, Tesla Model S is my next car!! it has all electric!
HondaRulzz4 8 months ago
Not a word about handling or seat of the pants feel!? Buyers looking at the rest of the Civic line might prioritize mpg, but buyers of the Si don't. Mpg is a factor, but the majority of this review focused on how new changes affected mpg and not how exciting the new Si is, or isn't, to drive. It's the performance model ffs!
ktonkin3 8 months ago
I wonder if a blind badger designed the exterior?
bwright1991 8 months ago
So now Honda and Toyota both have sacrificed style, design, and power for efficiency and boredom. I hope Nissan does not follow the same path, at least they have the Altima, Maxima, 370Z, and GTR.
franchize31x 8 months ago
why not have the previous generation at hand to observe the differences underneath the car?
m1ste2tea 8 months ago
Honda is slowly following Toyota, thier cars are becoming less and less exciting.

People, wake up...this car makes less torque then hyundai's BASE GLS Sonata engine.
its2realj 8 months ago
Wow, Honda Civic upskirt
khunopie 8 months ago 3
I don't understand how this is worse...it's faster and much more powerful. Your getting a bigger motor that makes more power in a similar package. Your killing the Si not Honda.
Yoda8232 8 months ago
@Yoda8232 The main reason why many people (myself included) think this new Si is worse than the previous gen is that Honda has killed the rev happy 8,000 RPM nature of the previous Si i favor of a more Accord like drivetrain. Now the Si is just like any other 4 cylinder car since it has a relatively low redline and no real VTEC kick. This motor has VTEC on the intake cam only.
Xbox360Player350 8 months ago
@Xbox360Player350 Just like the previous SI, only Vtect on intake cam, wtf is your point? This has more power and has a lot more torque, it's a sporty FWD car, if you want a SPORTS Car, go look at Porsche or something else and stop conplaining about "omg this engine makes more power at lower rpm, I want more rpm for more noise and engine wear!!!!111!".
rxvexe 8 months ago
@rxvexe I'm not saying Honda should turn the Si into a sports car, but they shouldn't dumb it down either. The Si is now basically a 2/3 scale Accord EX coupe with an Accord motor. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but the previous gen Si had a bespoke motor that made it uniquely an Si. No other car winds out quite like one. I don't know about you, but I've driven several and it was pretty entertaining to keep the car in its power band. A better solution would have been to rework the K20 motor

They say, most of the changes are underneath Lol. Obviously those changes aren't good since the 1999SI beat this one in the handling department.

joeln0671 8 months ago
Awesome car!
hondaboii89 8 months ago
o no! the Si has torque now! i no longer have to keep the revs over 6000 to do anything! ... come on people, the Si getting a bit more power is a good thing. and not its a much more well rounded car. the one thing that turned me off of the Si when i was considering it for my new car was the fact that it never seemed to feel relaxed. it was always revving, always racy, always red. now i can have the vtec awesomeness when i want it, and i can chill and still have some power when i dont.
BlueCrystal021 8 months ago
@Marshmallowrex Punctuation. Words. Spelling. Learn these things, then come back.

Honda- people aren't buying the Si for fuel economy. So don't cut corners to give it better fuel economy. Save that for the other Civics.
