It's really nice film for a watcher, but a rude Soviet MISINTERPRITATION caused by Lubarskaya, the famous story-corruptor of 1930th and 1950th. To my regret her 'interpritation for kids' was the basis of this film, not the original collection itself. I have both versions, hers and complete poretic translation, and they are a million times remote as for their contents

Does it have the part where they find a talking longboat, and say, longboat, will you row yourself, and it says no way; so they say, what if we row you out to sea with a south wind, will you sail yourself north, and the boat says, no way; so they sing a magic song and conjure up 100 rowers.

That's my favorite part... in the style of bardic entertainment for sure

Neuvostoliitossa arvostettiin Kalevalaa. Jossakin Itä-Karjalassa perinne eli, ja elää, hyvinkin voimakkaana. Ei mikään ihme että eräät piirit sen tahtoivatkin Suomeen aikanaan liittää. Mutta voipi olla että nämä itä-Karjalan porukat itseään varsinaisina suomalaisina pitävätkin.

yeah, tolkien took imprssions. but Kalevala i about 2000 years old.

I know. But Kalevala as a story is only about 200-300 years old. Lönnrot collected it while he was wandering in Karjala. Some stories of it are about 2000 years old. I guess..
