This music just makes u wanna robot! hahaha j/k Anyways about to put in a hard for the first time. I have to install it then move all my program files to the new drive then make the drive my main (C) drive. Looking for guidance btw... it's a Dimension 4400
Hi, any ideas on how to open the cover of a dell dimension xps R450 (a really old model)? It doesn't seem to have the buttons you press and presto opens easily.
your lucky you can add anything to a dell pc, they permenently stick parts to the case with screws only they have the equipment to unscrew. They are almost unupgradeable.
@mamothcar1 Agree with you there, I need to upgrade my power supply but I would like a tut so I don't screw things up, and I don't trust Dell with the types of power supplies they allow in thier cases.
Hey, I have a Dell Dimension 5150 too.I have 4GB of Ram running in Windows 7 64Bit, is it possible that I could add 4GB to the other 2 empty slots (two 2GB sticks)? Or is GB the limit?
@yannickharv You should be able to add another 2 ( 2GB modules) to the computer. Its just a case of carefully slotting in the new modules. the only thing that limits how much RAM you can put in your computer is the amount of slots on the motherboard. I hope this helped.
@WandillupVideos There are other limitations also, such as physical design of RAM (does it have one cut or two?), and the maximum amount of RAM the computer can handle. If the computer has four RAM slots, but will only handle 2 GBs total, it won't handle 4 1 GB modules.
dude , i did everything like that, except the extra hard drive has a blue sata cable not a red, does it matter???..i boot my computer, and it dosent recognize my new hard drive..HELP anybody
i got a dell dimension 9150, i was wondering what is the size of the hard drive i am able to put in a 2.5" a 3.5" and also are my dvd drives set to ide inetrface?
Excellent job! BUT, What if those two bottom bays are full as in my case? The front bays are full also but I can eliminate the card reader since it died within nine months of buying the Dell.
I want to upgrade the RAM, can i take 2 more hard drives from my other dell dimension 5000 and add them to the current vacant slots? will it increase the overall RAM?
Adding another hard drive would not increase your RAM, it would increase your storage space. Now you may be able to take more RAM from your other machine and add it to the two empty slots. We also have a video on how to add more memory (RAM) to your system.
Hello there. Great instructional video, many others could learn from you.
I am trying to help my sister. Her Dell Dimension (I think 4700) has died and she was given an HP XT938 tower with no hard drive. Is it possible to use the hard drive from the Dell Dimension and put it in the HP XT938? I've read that the HP has an IDE hard drive, does this matter?
Yes you would be able to use the hard drive. However you would have to reload the operating system via the recovery cds from the HP. This would wipe out any data stored on the Dell drive in the process.
absolutely. the only thing is the sonnection type. theres eide (like a ribbon cable) and then theres serial ata (thin colored one like it is on the video) you can do it as long as the cnnections on both computers are the same. and if her computer died, it could be the hard drive believe it or not. so make sure thats not the problem. i hope i helped.
IT complete depends on the computer model and type of connection. Video cards will either have an AGP, a PCI, or a PCI Express connection. Once you find out the connection type, and get the correct card, use your owners manual to find the socket on the motherboard. After turning off all power connections to the computer, all you will need to do is plug it in. Some video cards will need additonal power, however most do not. Hope this helps.
You can easily upgrade your RAM to 2GB without an issues. You will want to check your current Hard Drive size. I'm seeing that the Dell Dimension B110 came with a 160GB drive. The rule of thumb is that you don't add a hard drive that is more tahn 4X your original. So potentially you could get a 350GB or 500GB if you needed the space. If it is too large, you shold be able to partion the drive. You can go on our site, search by your model and purchase there. Hope this helps!
I found out that I could get some extra power out of it. They didnt give info but just these examples: Add the max memry 2G over clock to 800Mhz and IntelPent 4. with an 80g Hardrive.
There are several reason a person would add a hard drive. First would be additional storage. If you have a small hard drive so programs can't even be installed due to a lack of sufficent space. Another would be for a replacement. If your current drive became infected or simply "burnt out" installing a new hard drive instead of buying a new computer is a more economical solution. Hope this helps. MGM
These installation instructions are basically the same for all desktop computers. The only difference will be the connections. It will either be SATA or IDE. Hope this helps!
Most current motherboards have IDE and SATA ports, so you may just need a cable and power adapter. It is always good to check with the manufacture specifications for the motherboard and/or the computer model capabilities. Hope this helps!
As soon your computer turns on you will want to begin pressing F2 rapidly. Sometimes the start-up screen will come and go so quickly that it is easy to miss and it may take a few tries. Hope this helps!
Pressing F2 should allow you to get to the BIOS so you can ensure the boot priority is set for the drive the Operating System (OS) disc is in. From there you will need to reinstall the OS and any other programs you want on the new drive. Check with the manufacture of the hard drive or your computer for more specific details if you are still having trouble. Hope this helps!
i have a dimension e310 and i was looking at the 320 GB 7200 RPM Caviar SE WD3200JB EIDE Internal Hard Drive for it. i wanted to know what the advantage to having a upgraded hard drive is???
Upgrading your hard drive will allow you to have more storage capacity. All of the hard drives listed for the Dell Dimension E310 are indeed compatible with this model and will work; however, we do not recommend going higher then 4x the size of the original hard drive. The reason being is that a large one such as a 320GB or 500GB may not read the total size (e.g. you install a 320GB, but the computer only reads 250GB). Hope this helps!
It totally depends on what you are looking for in performance. You can look at our site for prices of hard drives taht are compatible with your computer.
I'm still on a dell 8200, I got mine in late 2001. Still works fine, upgraded it along the way. Specs: Pentium 4 2.60ghz 1GB of RDRAM PC800 80GB WesternDigital 7200rpm 8mb buffer hd BFG nvidia geforce 6 6200 OC 256mb card Turtlebeach Riveria sound card 19" NEC crt 1024 X 768 at 100hz 32bit Lite-On DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive second NEC CD-RW drive Flobby drive DSL speed using a Ethernet card Yep it still runs, and I play some games online aswell :) :/
You would need to purchase an adapter or enclosure for the laptop drive to connect it to the desktop. An enclosure would be preferrable as then you can wipe the data and use it as an external drive. Hope this helps!
Enjoyed your vid. I've just replaced a defective 2.5" IDE HDD in my Dell Inspiron 1300 notebook and I'd like to connect it as a slave HDD in my Dimension 2400 to see if I can retrieve any of the data. Can you advise if this is doable and what the cabling, jumper setting issues would be?
Sorry you feel this way. However, there are many people who have purchased Dell computers and we are trying to assist them with getting the best upgrade possible.
Ooo-I found this vid on Google. I have a pretty old (secondhand from a friend) Dell Dimension that came with Win98SE on it (not sure of the exact age tho-it's a TSP-T700r) that I want to add more space to. Can you tell from my info if I'm able to add a second harddrive to it, or if it's too old? It works fine-the space is getting limited (I've freed up all that I can.) Or would a memory card be better?
It depends on the proformance that you are looking for. If you give us a call, one of out tech reps would be able to help you match what you are looking to do with the correct upgrade.
It's definitely not a good idea to cut off any of the heatsink because you'll likely pull other components off as well (not to mention causing your video card to overheat).
That really depends on what kind of Dell Dimension you have. The things you need to find out are what kind of video card interface you have (PCI, AGP, or PCI-express) and what your power supply rating is (in watts).
The one in the video is a Dell Dimension 9100. If you have that, you can go to Dell's website and check the power supply in it and see if you can install the video card you want. Hope that helps.
You can replace your current hard drive, sure. However, there are a few more steps involved if you want to do this. Make sure you back up your old data on CD or DVD first, and after you install the new drive, you'll need to put your operating system disc in the drive so you can format the drive and install your operating system.
What you can do is install Windows on an external hard drive, boot from that drive, and then use an antivirus program (AVG is a free one) to locate and delete the trojan on your old drive.
That all depends on whether you're finding you have enough storage space for what you're using the computer for. If you just use it for documents and small files, then you may not need an upgrade. However, if you're using a lot of multimedia such as photos, videos, music, etc., a hard drive upgrade can give you the space you need.
i just got a new HD for my dell dimension 8400. But when i plug the new one in to replace the old one, it just say no booting device is available. I know i don't have windows on the new one, but i'm trying to install it with my Dell disc. But it just won't give me the option of boot from disc. I can't find what the problem is... any helps?
Good question. There should be an intro screen when you turn the computer on and it should say to hit F12 to enter the boot menu, where you can tell it what to boot from. If that doesn't work, I'd call the company you bought the drive from to get support.
well...the main problem is the CD Rom actually.. Cuz the CD need CD Rom 2 run, but it doesn't detect any... It just says they are not available...and won't read from the disc when they are perfectly plugged in...
The only thing I can think of is that you're using an installation DVD in a CD only drive. Check the top of the installation disc, and see if it has a DVD icon on it. If your drive does not, then that's the problem.
When you get a new disk it is not initialized or formatted - you will need to install it a second disk, initialize it from computer management and then use it
I got a Dell dimension 3100, I just touched my hard drive caddie and one bit broke off, then I replaced it, I had a 3year extended warranty. they would not fix it, also i need to replace my pci retention slot.
PCI Retention Bracket Service Kit, External, Contains R6767 & W6246
Just a tiny clip broke off nothing important, but don't know how to replace. Those Indian techs. Thank you for the video.
It's worth noting that you need to know what kind of SATA data cable you need.
My Dell does not hold a straight data cable. It's almost the same casing as in the video, but the insides are slightly different. I had to get an angled (drive) to straight (motherboard) data cable.
That's a really good point, and I appreciate you bringing it up. To me it seems kind of silly that they'd design them so different ones needed different angled cables, but at least there's no significant price difference between the two types.
Not that hard. Go into it and you should see memory info or something like that.(It differs between motherboards) and go into that part and it says there are 2 hard drives and just go to the second one and turn it on. If you don't think this is help. Go to google and search it or even go to youtube and search
You can replace/upgrade either the hard drive or the RAM in the Dimension 2400. If you want a faster computer, upgrade the RAM, if you want more storage space, upgrade the hard drive. These instructions aren't exactly the same for the 2400 because it's a different body type as well as drive, but it is possible.
I have an E310, but when I tried to install my hard drive my computer was missing the spare blue hard drive rail thing...you have to get one from Dell for like $20. I'm pissed off! The least they could frickin do is include the rail if they are going to give you a spare drive bay in the first place.
Most of the time they do include the bay rail, but you might be able to find one cheaper than from Dell. I'd try searching Google Products or something.
Man I have looked EVERYWHERE, and I've only found one other place besides Dell on the web that has the right part (#K7168), and its still going to run $20 to have it shipped to me. I am so ticked at Dell for ripping people off this way. Any kind-hearted Dell E310 owners out there who want to send me their spare blue drive caddy? I'll pay for shipping :-)
As a computer technician, please install at your own risk if you doing it over carpet.
In Winter time, it lot safer to operate electronic compare to Summer dues to static. However, if you are like me who not a pansy about static, make sure you install it on the table.
Alway! Disconnect power cord before operating it. People will miss this step often and find them having to start over installing parts.
Thanks for the video. I have a Dell Dimension E310 and the "insides" are similar. I ordered a new hard drive and the blue rail system (mine did not have an empty one as shown). I also have the "extra" SATA power cable in the computer as you showed in the video. However Dell tells me I do not need the other cable (the red cable in your video) to connect to the motherboard? Do I in fact need it? Also, do I not need to connect any ribbon cables?
If you're adding an additional hard drive (as opposed to replacing your current one) you'll need two cables to attach to your new drive. The power cable should actually already be inside your computer, and it's pointed out in the video. The SATA cable is the data cable and does need to be plugged up to the drive and the motherboard. Hope that helps!
I've pointed this out before, but I'll be happy to do it again. Hard drives are much less susceptible to damage from static electricity. Memory is much more prone to that, but even that is pretty rare. Any time you're working on the inside of your computer it's a good idea to ground yourself first, but it's not something to be extremely paranoid about.
This is fantastic, great job on the video; except shouldn't you inform viewers to make sure they are grounded or static-free before touching the hard drive?
Yeah, that was an oversight on my part when making the video. Fortunately, hard drives are much less susceptible to damage from small amounts of static electricity than RAM is.
Actually an additional hard drive will give you extra storage for your files. If you want to increase your system speed, I suggest a memory upgrade. You can find one at our website. Thanks!
Many thanks for clear video. Very easy clear instructions to follow. I just need to find the suitable internal hard drive.

can i install a secondary ide hard drive to a computer thats using a sata hard drive?
DarkStar00150 2 years ago
Most current motherboards have IDE and SATA ports, so you may just need a cable and power adapter. It is always good to check with the manufacture specifications for the motherboard and/or the computer model capabilities. Hope this helps!

I have a question. Where in the F2 Meny do i click for installing the Hard Drive?
nykvarnskurken 2 years ago
As soon your computer turns on you will want to begin pressing F2 rapidly. Sometimes the start-up screen will come and go so quickly that it is easy to miss and it may take a few tries. Hope this helps!
4allmemorydotcom 2 years ago
But then i start the Setup where should i go?
nykvarnskurken 2 years ago
Pressing F2 should allow you to get to the BIOS so you can ensure the boot priority is set for the drive the Operating System (OS) disc is in. From there you will need to reinstall the OS and any other programs you want on the new drive. Check with the manufacture of the hard drive or your computer for more specific details if you are still having trouble. Hope this helps!

i have a dimension e310 and i was looking at the 320 GB 7200 RPM Caviar SE WD3200JB EIDE Internal Hard Drive for it. i wanted to know what the advantage to having a upgraded hard drive is???
dvonlangen 3 years ago
Upgrading your hard drive will allow you to have more storage capacity. All of the hard drives listed for the Dell Dimension E310 are indeed compatible with this model and will work; however, we do not recommend going higher then 4x the size of the original hard drive. The reason being is that a large one such as a 320GB or 500GB may not read the total size (e.g. you install a 320GB, but the computer only reads 250GB). Hope this helps!

Can you advise if this is doable and what the cabling, jumper setting issues would be?
jimbozy 3 years ago
Sorry you feel this way. However, there are many people who have purchased Dell computers and we are trying to assist them with getting the best upgrade possible.

Ooo-I found this vid on Google. I have a pretty old (secondhand from a friend) Dell Dimension that came with Win98SE on it (not sure of the exact age tho-it's a TSP-T700r) that I want to add more space to. Can you tell from my info if I'm able to add a second harddrive to it, or if it's too old? It works fine-the space is getting limited (I've freed up all that I can.) Or would a memory card be better?
Thank you for any advice you can give. :-)

It depends on the proformance that you are looking for. If you give us a call, one of out tech reps would be able to help you match what you are looking to do with the correct upgrade.

i have a dell dimension e520 but i cant fit an 8800 gtx into it, shud i cut some of the heatsink shroud off ?
zeldafreek 3 years ago
It's definitely not a good idea to cut off any of the heatsink because you'll likely pull other components off as well (not to mention causing your video card to overheat).

Can this system support a 9600GT video card?Because i want to replace my old one with it
m4pl3r 3 years ago
That really depends on what kind of Dell Dimension you have. The things you need to find out are what kind of video card interface you have (PCI, AGP, or PCI-express) and what your power supply rating is (in watts).
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
I have the exact same system as the one video.
m4pl3r 3 years ago
The one in the video is a Dell Dimension 9100. If you have that, you can go to Dell's website and check the power supply in it and see if you can install the video card you want. Hope that helps.

hi! I just wonderd if you know if I can remove the hard drive who's inside and then ad the new one.
inmedd 3 years ago
You can replace your current hard drive, sure. However, there are a few more steps involved if you want to do this. Make sure you back up your old data on CD or DVD first, and after you install the new drive, you'll need to put your operating system disc in the drive so you can format the drive and install your operating system.
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
hm...is it impossible to use an extern hardrive? If I remove the old hardrive, cause I got a trojan horse and cannot restart the system
inmedd 3 years ago
What you can do is install Windows on an external hard drive, boot from that drive, and then use an antivirus program (AVG is a free one) to locate and delete the trojan on your old drive.
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
thanks :) I will try

Actually if you go to our website and use it to find your model, you can see compatible hard drives for it.
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
do i need a sata hard drive for my dell Dimension 5150
lukethemonkeyman 3 years ago
That all depends on whether you're finding you have enough storage space for what you're using the computer for. If you just use it for documents and small files, then you may not need an upgrade. However, if you're using a lot of multimedia such as photos, videos, music, etc., a hard drive upgrade can give you the space you need.

i just got a new HD for my dell dimension 8400. But when i plug the new one in to replace the old one, it just say no booting device is available. I know i don't have windows on the new one, but i'm trying to install it with my Dell disc. But it just won't give me the option of boot from disc. I can't find what the problem is... any helps?
im1knight 3 years ago
Good question. There should be an intro screen when you turn the computer on and it should say to hit F12 to enter the boot menu, where you can tell it what to boot from. If that doesn't work, I'd call the company you bought the drive from to get support.
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
well...the main problem is the CD Rom actually.. Cuz the CD need CD Rom 2 run, but it doesn't detect any... It just says they are not available...and won't read from the disc when they are perfectly plugged in...
im1knight 3 years ago
The only thing I can think of is that you're using an installation DVD in a CD only drive. Check the top of the installation disc, and see if it has a DVD icon on it. If your drive does not, then that's the problem.
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
uh..thats not the problem. I used a DVD burner to run the disc plus the installation disc is a CD to start with..
im1knight 3 years ago
When you get a new disk it is not initialized or formatted - you will need to install it a second disk, initialize it from computer management and then use it

I got a Dell dimension 3100, I just touched my hard drive caddie and one bit broke off, then I replaced it, I had a 3year extended warranty. they would not fix it, also i need to replace my pci retention slot.

energybot 3 years ago
It's worth noting that you need to know what kind of SATA data cable you need.
My Dell does not hold a straight data cable. It's almost the same casing as in the video, but the insides are slightly different. I had to get an angled (drive) to straight (motherboard) data cable.
Ripptyd 3 years ago
That's a really good point, and I appreciate you bringing it up. To me it seems kind of silly that they'd design them so different ones needed different angled cables, but at least there's no significant price difference between the two types.
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
It's definitely silly. But that's Big Name Computer Companies for you. ;)

Great video man!
nerdy1351 3 years ago
Not that hard. Go into it and you should see memory info or something like that.(It differs between motherboards) and go into that part and it says there are 2 hard drives and just go to the second one and turn it on. If you don't think this is help. Go to google and search it or even go to youtube and search
thefsxflyer 3 years ago
You can replace/upgrade either the hard drive or the RAM in the Dimension 2400. If you want a faster computer, upgrade the RAM, if you want more storage space, upgrade the hard drive. These instructions aren't exactly the same for the 2400 because it's a different body type as well as drive, but it is possible.

I have an E310, but when I tried to install my hard drive my computer was missing the spare blue hard drive rail thing...you have to get one from Dell for like $20. I'm pissed off! The least they could frickin do is include the rail if they are going to give you a spare drive bay in the first place.
numberforty1 3 years ago
Most of the time they do include the bay rail, but you might be able to find one cheaper than from Dell. I'd try searching Google Products or something.
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
Man I have looked EVERYWHERE, and I've only found one other place besides Dell on the web that has the right part (#K7168), and its still going to run $20 to have it shipped to me. I am so ticked at Dell for ripping people off this way. Any kind-hearted Dell E310 owners out there who want to send me their spare blue drive caddy? I'll pay for shipping :-)

zomg! I should have Put my laptop's SATA HDD in my Dell before I sent it off to HP repair D:
N30tonicDragon3 3 years ago
As a computer technician, please install at your own risk if you doing it over carpet.
In Winter time, it lot safer to operate electronic compare to Summer dues to static. However, if you are like me who not a pansy about static, make sure you install it on the table.
Alway! Disconnect power cord before operating it. People will miss this step often and find them having to start over installing parts.
Bopkasen 3 years ago
Thanks for the video. I have a Dell Dimension E310 and the "insides" are similar. I ordered a new hard drive and the blue rail system (mine did not have an empty one as shown). I also have the "extra" SATA power cable in the computer as you showed in the video. However Dell tells me I do not need the other cable (the red cable in your video) to connect to the motherboard? Do I in fact need it? Also, do I not need to connect any ribbon cables?
Your help is appreciated because I'm perplexed...
mclary08 3 years ago
If you're adding an additional hard drive (as opposed to replacing your current one) you'll need two cables to attach to your new drive. The power cable should actually already be inside your computer, and it's pointed out in the video. The SATA cable is the data cable and does need to be plugged up to the drive and the motherboard. Hope that helps!
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
Thanks. I'll order the SATA data cable from your web site! Thanks also for the prompt response!

Grat video!!!! Anyone know what length of cable needed. The XPS430 seems to be the same case. Thanks

hey kids out there, dont forget to ground yourself!...you dont want your daddy's com to get fucked up by static electricity
Djhotdog 3 years ago
I've pointed this out before, but I'll be happy to do it again. Hard drives are much less susceptible to damage from static electricity. Memory is much more prone to that, but even that is pretty rare. Any time you're working on the inside of your computer it's a good idea to ground yourself first, but it's not something to be extremely paranoid about.
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago
This is fantastic, great job on the video; except shouldn't you inform viewers to make sure they are grounded or static-free before touching the hard drive?
goodguy2k2 3 years ago
Yeah, that was an oversight on my part when making the video. Fortunately, hard drives are much less susceptible to damage from small amounts of static electricity than RAM is.
4allmemorydotcom 3 years ago

This is a great video, it is very clear on what you have to do. Is the hard drive used to get extra memory in the computer?
itsrichardperkins 3 years ago
Actually an additional hard drive will give you extra storage for your files. If you want to increase your system speed, I suggest a memory upgrade. You can find one at our website. Thanks!
