Here is the deal on that. Most foreign car manufacturers create the cigarette lighter on a different circuit than things that require constant power like your cars clock, therefore the lighter outlet only receives power when the key is on unlike in many American made cars where there is constant power to the cigarette lighter outlet. I'm a mechanical engineering student and can not for the life of me figure out why domestic made cars are not designed the same way.

I've got one of those and all you have to have is the key turned on and enough battery juice. No engine required.

I don't mean to play devils advocate but if your car is dead/ battery is dead you are still screwed it takes power to amp a signal.
