My god there's so much soul in his voice when he sings it's amazing. Rain Dogs is one of my top five favourite albums of all time, Tom Waits is one of the finest alternative musicians of all time. Actually I don't trust anyone who doesn't like Tom Waits.
Now I just want to see him do more acting cos he seems to enjoy it so much (and he was awesome as Renfield in Bram Stoker's Dracula lol)
It`s a damn shame that we didn`t get this beautiful song in it`s entirety........ Tori Amos performed a powerful version of "Time" on Letterman as the first musical guest after 9-11-2001
This was the perfomance that made me a Tom Waits fan. My older brother had "Small Change," but I didn't get Tom as a teenager. I saw this on Letterman, and I saw the Rain Dogs tour at the Chicago Theatre (w/Marc Ribot!) a year later. Been a big fan ever since.
You see, I loved the out-of-tune guitar - the second I saw it I detuned mine a bit to see how it sounded. For most people it wouldn't work, but with Tom Waits it adds to the shambolic air that he presents visually, lyrically and musically.
It's Time that we all open up our minds and realize that Youtube and internet culture in general pose very serious and real threats to great art like that of Waits. Read "The Cult of the Amateur. How the Internet is killing our culture." by Andrew Keen. Enlighten yourselves. Free Tom from the Internet.
Pretty clever publicity campaign you set up on the coat tails of a great artist. Everyone now knows your book title and name. The internet seems to be working well for you amateurs.
first of all, i FUCKIN love WAits, I'm a DIEHARD fan. I'm not trying to leverage a private agenda off this man's illustrious and brilliant carreer. I love him, and wanna puke fuckin' blood everytime i see his music on youtube. Research youtube, you wouldn't want to even mention the great waits and the shit youtube in the same sentence. fuck off.
I must've said this many times. But if Waits himself desires not to be on the internet then would he please give me back the £50ish I have spent on his music after discovering him on the internet. I personally think the internet is great for music. Instead of having a record labels choice droned into your ears every day you can now try out whatever music you like. If the internet died now I think it would be a step backwards for our culture as our scope would suddenly be narrowed.
the thing is tom is one of a kind, he dont care about no copyright laws man. this cat is one of a fucking kind. He dont care about fame and lots of money he just wants to play at nightclubs up in heaven one day.
I agree with your sentiment up until the last sentence. If that was truly the case then why is it he rarely plays live and when he does it is in large venues with ticket prices up to £100+
I'm not knocking him, but I do sometimes think that people build up an unrealistic image of him. Those old instruments he plays aren't cheap to buy or maintain. He is still human. Albeit an incredibly fine one.
@Toedoog Yeah but his record company is actually with public broadcasting not against it like most major record companies, even though Tom isn't so crazy about the "internet thing". He actually regretted not protecting his music from his first record company when he was younger, I'm glad he knows who to protect his property from now.
the "closed caption" are great youtube!

I just think it's really cool that he got John C. Reilly and Dom DeLouise to play the song with him.

there IS no one more original in popular music.

All my fuckin´ words can´t express properly the genius behind the man, in all of his interviews always with that special irony and sense of humor..
What a treasure of document (the two parts)...and what a marvelous song inside..

yeah i noticed, at the last second he just spun the tuning peg, and kept going.
i love how this guy can make good music without "proper" tuning

@guardcorp I agree but; doesn't care about copyright?? Ha he's set up so many court cases about people and advertisements using his music.
