But here's a start: Great Britain along with France was one of the major nations involved in fighting Germany and Italy and later Japan. Britain's navy, for the most part, guaranteed allied access to the world's oceans. After France was defeated by Germany, Great Britain stood alone against Germany until the USSR and U.S. were brought into the war in 1941.

No idea? It is but the practicallity of the facts. Britain did little to help its Allies. While Britain's role in WW2 is throughly documented for any person who studies the period in depth, the role of Portugal's neutrality (And that of Spain, which was connected to the very Portuguese neutrality) and the diplomatic diligences made in that way are completely unknown.Thus, while I have the perfect idea of what Britain did, you have no information about Portugal during WW2 other than being neutral

Portuguese dictator, António de Oliveira Salazar, was sympathetic to the Axis powers (especially after siding with Franco in the Spanish Civil War). These factors resulted in considerable collaboration between Portugal and Nazi Germany. Britain and Portugal have a long history of being allies. Do you know how long? I'll let you look it up. So I'd expect better conduct from your country during the war. I have no problem with countries looking after their own interests. But that may have also had something to do with Britain's cautions about getting involved especially when allies like Poland, for example, where hemed in on both sides by the Nazis and Russia. It was also about preventing the war from spreading to the Iberian Peninsula. With that objective in mind, they also worked extensively in lobbying and pressuring Franco's government against joining the war, against the Phalanx's and Hitler's Imperialistic wishes. Quite successfully as you know. For a small country it was admirably done.
