These Microcephallics or "pinheads" are virtually unknown now due to various advancements, making this film a "must" for medical students. You can see why it was a banned film for so long though, not because of the unfortunates within, but more because of how they were exploited perhaps.
Also, you can make the case that in the film, the true 'freaks' are the vile examples of masculine and feminine ideals - the strongman and the beauty.
Indeed, it's clear that they are the genuine 'freaks' in this film.
Ignorant comment. If you watch this film you will realize that the real "freaks" in it are the "normal People" who attempt to exploit these people. they are portrayed as what they were; real people with real feelings and lives. BTW the "pinhead" who is difficult to understand was Schlitzie Sertees and by all accounts was a well respected and loved man by those who knew him.
Go find another cause to make yourself feel important.
I dont get what I said that upset you? What was Ignorant about it? The fact that i said that microcephallics are virtually unknown now? or the fact that the film was banned for many years in the UK? Or was it the word "exploitation" perhaps? which I meant form the point of view that, many of these people were employed in real "freak shows" in circuses in America in the early 20th century,? However, I merely made the point out of observation not malice of to condone it in any way.
It was the whole notion that they were exploited by virtue of the "freak show" dynamic. It strikes me as PC chic. These people were willing participants and this was their source of livelyhood I would think that especially when this film was made (1931) during the worst days of the great depression this would be a real blessing rather than exploitation.
I was freaked out by Schlitzie when I first watched Freaks, but I have warmed up to her/him, and now I think she/he is very cute and loveable, like a three year old child ^^
*I know Schlitzie is a male, but I thought it was cuter to adress him as female since he was always portrayed as a girl.
I just love that film. BSYES is absolutely right. People can be real monsters not because how they look, but because how they act. I highly recomend anybody to see that film. It was an Video Google some time ago.
No...because he's speaking gibberish. It doens't mean anything, although he says it like it does. He seems to be admonishing Frodo for flirting with Jenny Lee and Elvira.
I'm a big fan of Schlitzie's. He was quite wonderful.
I think he had more intelligence than people gave him credit for. In "Freaks" Schlitzie lights up the screen in every scene he's in. He had personality!
My dog has personality as well, does that mean it is smarter than a 3 year old?
Before you answer, know that I also have a 3 year old daughter who knows many hundreds of words, speaks in full, (mostly) proper sentences, knows the lyrics for like a dozen songs, spells simple words, does basic math, solves puzzles, operates simple electronics, brushes her teeth, dresses herself, understands complex concepts such as empathy and greed, tells time, draws pictures of individuals, need I go on?
As for your dog, it's possible that he or she has more intelligence than some three year olds. If your daughter is 3 and can do all that then it sounds like she's not typical of most three year olds; she sounds strangely advanced for that age. As for Schlitzie, I still believe he had more sense than he's given credit for. He was a sideshow PERFORMER, after all. And a damn good one!
There are some very intelligent dogs...and some very low-intelligence three year olds. So I still say that some dogs might be more intelligent than some three year olds. Hell, I've seen dogs who appear to be more intelligent than some ADULTS I've seen.
"Excellent breeding stock"...it that why you had a child, to "breed" a genius? That's not a good reason to bring a life into this world.
What? Apparently you are new to the internet, so allow me to explain something to you. The ";)" symbol, reminiscent of a winking face, indicates, as in standard communication, that the preceding statement isn't to be taken literally. My daughter is everything to me. With the overload of bad shit I have been through in the past 4 months, she is the sole reason I am still going. Fuck you for doubting my parenting motivations.
I didn't demean it, I misunderstood it. I use the internet frequently, but don't pay any attention to the little squiggles and symbols people sometimes use. So I didn't understand that you were not being serious. At any rate, you seem very hostile.
Although Schlitzie is wearing a dress he is in fact a man - Simon Metz. I think he was happy in a circus, where people treated him normally, rather than in a home where he would be considered a 'subject'.
Ok, look, in this movie, the freaks turned out to be normal, decent hardworking people afflicted with physical deformities. The "normal" attractive showmen turned out to be manipulative monsters. It's actually a damned touching movie, and not just about laughing at scary looking people. People can be far more scary on the inside than out.

exploited? they had jobs, they had their independance (maybe not 100% but more than theyd get in a hospital)
Xariabyron 2 years ago
Whichever way you colour it, its was still exploitation, because, as the title suggests, they were billed as Freaks.
BradBrassman 2 years ago
on a purely biological level, they were. it was a label that normal people gave them as an insult and they made it their own, like the n-word.

Or maybe he got angry because the guy said he would buy Jenny Lee and Elvira a "beautiful hat with even a bigger feather on it".
But I don't know if Schlitzie could have understood all that. He apparently had the mental capacity of a 4 year old, at best.

Dogs as intelligent as a three year old? -_-
The most conclusive study I have ever read on that subject suggested the smartest breeds had the intellect of your average 14 month-old.
You're correct though, she's not exactly a typical child, she happens to come from excellent breeding stock ;)
